Hero Tahir Sinani, a KLA commander who fell in the war for the liberation of Kosovo, was honored by Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The commemoration comes just a few months after Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group in Albania, shamefully used the martyr’s legacy to attack the citizens’ protest, which has been demanding the removal of the Rama government for two consecutive months.

A commemorative ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of Commander Tahir Sinani’s death was held yesterday in Pristina.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti said this was the first commemorative ceremony for Sinani organized by Kosovo’s institutions, specifically by the government.

In his speech at the ceremony, Kurti described General Tahir Sinani as one of the most distinguished fighters for the national cause.

According to him, Sinani took part in some of the most glorious battles fought by Albanians in modern history.

“The indomitable freedom fighter. After he himself became involved in the very heart of the war. Despite this, he refused to place himself above the chain of command of the soldiers he had personally trained, insisting that he first undergo a personal test: his first confrontation with Serbian enemy forces. And that is exactly what happened. Years later, when Tahir Sinani was no longer alive among his fellow fighters, one of them, Rexhep Selimi, also well known for his multifaceted artistic creativity, would turn this act by Tahir Sinani into a poem that would be set to music as a song, which we have naturally included in today’s ceremony as well. Tahir Sinani concluded his involvement in the Kosovo war while serving as commander of the Pashtrik Operational Zone, and in the days of Kosovo’s liberation, he entered Prizren triumphantly at the head of his soldiers,” Kurti said, according to KosovaPress.

A few days earlier, in June 2026, Taulant Balla, as part of his attacks on the protesters, described KLA commander and National Hero Tahir Sinani as a paid mercenary.

The statement by the head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group sparked reactions in Kosovo, where it was condemned as a shameless act.

Sadik Halitjaha, Sinani’s former fellow fighter, also spoke at the ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of Tahir Sinani’s death. He said Sinani could be ranked alongside the epic heroes of the Albanian nation.

“He was a direct descendant of Mic Sokoli and had Albanian blood. As he himself used to say: ‘I could not stand by and watch while my brothers were being killed in Kosovo.’ He sought to meet people at training centers in northern Albania and made contact with the KLA supply center and commander-in-chief Azem Syla. There, he received instructions and the order to enter Kosovo. He entered Kosovo with a relatively small group of soldiers to establish a security perimeter, but he carried security in his heart and soul, because he had an automatic rifle in his hands. He entered with Ruzhdi Kryeziu and several other comrades with combat experience,” Halitjaha said.

Tahir Sinani took part in three wars, fought in Kosovo, Macedonia and the Preševo Valley.

Twenty-five years have passed since that bitter day when Tahir Sinani, one of the most prominent figures of Albanian resistance, gave his life on the battlefield. He stands out as one of the few commanders who experienced and led forces on three different fronts: in Kosovo, in the Preševo Valley, and in North Macedonia during 2001.

Born in the village of Gri in Tropojë on May 25, 1964, after his training in Albania’s military academies, he served as an officer and educator of troops. However, the national call drove him to leave his position and join the Kosovo Liberation Army as soon as the conflict erupted. Within the KLA, his activity focused on the Pashtrik Operational Zone and the core leadership of the General Staff. His contribution was crucial in structuring the forces and commanding the Battle of Pashtrik, which remains one of the most glorious chapters of that war.

With the end of the fighting in Kosovo, Sinani did not stop his engagement. Initially he was appointed head of units in the Kosovo Protection Corps (TMK), only to then line up among the fighters in the Preševo, Medveđa, and Bujanovac Valley. His cycle of national commitment continued in 2001, when he joined the National Liberation Army in North Macedonia, taking command of the 116th Brigade.

His end came on July 29, 2001, on the outskirts of Gostivar, during the armed clashes in North Macedonia. Historical records show that he fell together with four comrades-in-arms, as a result of a powerful explosion at an ammunition storage site. A year later, in 2002, his remains were brought to the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Landovicë, Prizren, where they rest to this day.

Known by the epithet “the commander of three wars,” the name of Tahir Sinani remains inextricably linked to the three largest conflicts that shaped Albanian military engagement in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In honor of this anniversary, Kosovo has organized a series of commemorative activities. Throughout the day, homages were held at the Landovicë cemetery and near his statue in Prizren, while a special academy was also dedicated to him at the University Library of Prishtina.

Kanë kaluar 25 vite që prej asaj dite të hidhur kur Tahir Sinani, një ndër figurat më të spikatura të rezistencës shqiptare, dha jetën në fushën e betejës. Ai dallohet si një ndër të paktët komandantë që përjetoi dhe drejtoi forca në tri fronte të ndryshme: në Kosovë, në Luginë të Preshevës dhe në Maqedoninë e Veriut gjatë vitit 2001.

I lindur në fshatin Gri të Tropojës më 25 maj 1964, pas formimit të tij në akademitë ushtarake të Shqipërisë, ai shërbeu si oficer dhe edukator i trupave. Mirëpo, thirrja kombëtare e shtyu të linte pozitën e tij dhe t’i bashkohej Ushtrisë Çlirimtare të Kosovës sapo plasi konflikti. Në kuadër të UÇK-së, veprimtaria e tij u përqendrua në Zonën Operative të Pashtrikut dhe në bërthamën drejtuese të Shtabit të Përgjithshëm. Kontributi i tij ishte thelbësor në strukturimin e forcave dhe në komandën e Betejës së Pashtrikut, që mbetet një prej kapitujve më të lavdishëm të asaj lufte.

Me mbarimin e luftimeve në Kosovë, Sinani nuk e ndali angazhimin e tij. Fillimisht u caktua në krye të njësive në Trupat Mbrojtëse të Kosovës (TMK), për t’u rreshtuar më pas në radhët e luftëtarëve në Luginën e Preshevës, Medvegjës dhe Bujanocit. Cikli i tij i angazhimit kombëtar vijoi në vitin 2001, kur iu bashkua Ushtrisë Çlirimtare Kombëtare në Maqedoninë e Veriut, duke marrë drejtimin e Brigadës 116.

Fundi i tij erdhi më 29 korrik 2001, në rrethinat e Gostivarit, gjatë përplasjeve të armatosura në Maqedoninë e Veriut. Të dhënat historike tregojnë se ai ra së bashku me katër shokët e armëve, si pasojë e një shpërthimi të fuqishëm në një pikë depozitimi municionesh. Një vit më pas, më 2002, eshtrat e tij u sollën në Varrezat e Dëshmorëve në Landovicë të Prizrenit, ku prehen edhe sot.

I njohur me epitetin “komandanti i tri luftërave”, emri i Tahir Sinanit mbetet i lidhur pazgjidhshmërisht me tre konfliktet më të mëdha që formësuan angazhimin ushtarak shqiptar në periudhën e fundviteve ’90 dhe fillimviteve 2000. Në nderim të këtij përvjetori, Kosova ka organizuar një sërë aktivitetesh përkujtimore. Gjatë ditës së sotme, janë zhvilluar homazhe në varrezat e Landovicës dhe pranë shtatores së tij në Prizren, ndërsa i është kushtuar edhe një akademi e veçantë në Bibliotekën Universitare të Prishtinës.

I just saw the letter published by Taulant Balla, supposedly a list with the names of mercenaries in the KLA, because that is what he apparently calls the fighters for freedom. A half-complete letter, without specifics, at the top of which stands the name of my father, National Hero Tahir Sinani. The man who sacrificed everything for the national cause, the liberator of three wars. Today Taulant Balla, a remnant of Albanian politics, desecrates and insults the name and blood of my father.

Organization of KLA War Veterans, your duty is to protect the rights of veterans, the families of martyrs and the values of the war, and not to engage in politics under the cloak of the KLA through this organization. Otherwise, you should be dissolved immediately as a leadership group and be led by people who know the value of the war and the blood of the martyrs.

After almost 25 years since my father fell as a martyr, to experience this humiliation is severe!
