A swift police operation was carried out in Gjilan after six individuals of foreign origin were discovered inside a heavy vehicle. The case, which is being treated as migrant smuggling, has prompted Kosovo’s investigative authorities into action.

According to Kosovo Police reports, the incident came to light on Saturday at around 11:05 a.m. A tip received by law enforcement indicated that during the unloading of cargo from a truck, several individuals were found hiding in the trailer section.

Immediately after receiving the information, police forces mobilized and arrived at the scene. There they confirmed the presence of six men, all foreign nationals. They, together with the person driving the truck, were escorted to the police station, where the entire procedure was overseen by the case prosecutor.

After the questioning sessions concluded, the six foreign nationals were given accommodation documents, in full compliance with the legal framework. They were then released.

On the other hand, the truck driver, who is suspected of being involved in this activity, was also handled according to standard procedures. After consultations with the prosecutor and the formal opening of the case, he was also released pending further investigation.

Currently, the case has been categorized as “Migrant Smuggling” and investigations are still ongoing to clarify all the circumstances of this event.

An official statement from North Macedonia’s Customs Administration said the driver, who works for a Kosovo transport company, was carrying aluminium profiles from Turkey to Kosovo. He was selected for inspection by the mobile team while passing through the Deve Bair border crossing. When asked whether he had any additional items to declare beyond the documented cargo, he replied in the negative.

Suspecting irregularities, authorities conducted a thorough inspection, which uncovered exactly 2,000 ampoules of “Gadovist 7.5 ml” solution. They were distributed across several hiding places inside the cab: in the upper bunk, in the vehicle’s gaps, above the driver’s seat and among personal belongings.

The Customs Administration confirmed that all the products were confiscated and that criminal proceedings for the offence of “smuggling,” as provided for and punishable under the Criminal Code, had been initiated against the suspect.

“Gadovist 7.5 ml” is administered intravenously during magnetic resonance imaging scans and requires a special import authorisation, as well as strict storage and transport conditions.

North Macedonia’s Customs Administration also reported that a total of 13 cases of drug and medicinal product trafficking have been prevented so far this year, resulting in the seizure of around 29,000 different pharmaceutical units.
