The families of the three victims who lost their lives in the tragic accident on the Skopje–Blace motorway section will be legally represented by lawyer Arianit Koci. He has called for the circumstances of the incident to be fully clarified and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Koci said that he had gone with the victims’ relatives to the North Macedonian Police. However, according to him, the key questions surrounding the investigation of the case remain unanswered.

The lawyer sought to find out which company had built the section, who had supervised the work, and who was responsible for securing the road. He also asked why access to the motorway section, although officially closed to traffic, had not been physically blocked.

According to Koci, further questions arise from the fact that the entrance to this section was physically blocked with gravel and equipped with traffic signs only after the fatal accident.

He demanded an explanation as to why these measures had not been implemented earlier, when the section was officially listed as closed to traffic, but were taken only after the accident occurred.

Koci stated that, at this stage, there is no information on whether anyone has been detained or questioned regarding responsibility for the case.

In his statement, the lawyer also addressed the financial burden that, according to him, the families faced following the tragedy.

He said that the families had to pay €2,800 to transport the bodies from North Macedonia to Kosovo, adding that the state should at least have covered this expense.

Confirming his commitment to legally representing the victims’ families, Koci called for the accident to be fully investigated and for institutional responsibility for the incident to be established.

Starting August 1, households receiving heating through the largest system, which includes EMV Supply, EMV Distribution and EMV Heat Production, will face an average price increase of 5.96%. The decision was approved by the Energy, Water Services and Municipal Waste Management Regulatory Commission (KRRE).

For households supplied by the former Skopje Sever heating plant, now called Energy Ecolink, the price will increase by an average of 3.6%. Meanwhile, the increase for household customers of EMV Energetika will be around 5%.

KRRE Chairman Aco Ristov said the decision to adjust the price by 5.96% was made following detailed economic and technical analyses of the operations of the energy companies supplying heat to consumers in the City of Skopje. According to him, the average bill will rise from 2,353 denars to 2,493 denars, an increase of 140 denars.

Ristov noted that the public, which has followed the process from the outset, has already been informed that the energy companies had submitted requests for increases ranging from 30% to 130%. He said that in the coming period, it is important to merge all ESM heating companies, an initiative supported by KRRE that aims to optimize resources, improve efficiency and ensure a favorable price for consumers.

Referring to the results of the analyses, the KRRE chief also announced that, on an annual basis, Skopje residents who use heating pay the lowest annual rate compared with residents of Belgrade, Ljubljana, Sofia and Sarajevo.

During one heating season, 1,521 new consumers were connected, bringing the total number of consumers supplied with heating to 67,494.

Torrential rain overnight has caused significant flooding along the Ferizaj–Skopje road, making it extremely difficult for vehicles to travel.

The large amount of water that accumulated on the road has also hindered heavy vehicles, including trucks, which moved very slowly or became stranded while attempting to pass through flooded areas.

The underpass in Ferizaj has flooded as a result of the intense rainfall.

Footage recorded at the scene shows that the water reached high levels and covered the lanes, turning this section of the road into a hazardous area for all road users.

The flooding has caused traffic delays, while drivers are urged to exercise particular caution and, where possible, use alternative routes until the relevant services intervene to remove the water and restore normal traffic flow.

Today marks 63 years since the devastating earthquake that struck Skopje on July 26, 1963, claiming the lives of 1,070 residents and injuring about 3,000 others.

This catastrophe is known as one of the darkest moments in Skopje’s history, but it also served as a test of international solidarity, which mobilized to support the community in reconstruction.

The main shock was recorded at 5:17 a.m., with weaker tremors continuing until 5:43 a.m. As a result, 15,800 homes collapsed completely, 28,000 others were damaged, and over 200,000 people were left homeless.

Immediately after the tragedy, the International Red Cross called on all organizations to collect food, while the Inter-Parliamentary Union recommended that parliaments and governments worldwide contribute to Skopje’s recovery.

The humanitarian initiative spread to many states, where fundraising campaigns began. The United Nations also took concrete actions to offer long-term support to the destroyed city.

On September 23, 1963, representatives from 35 countries requested that the General Assembly include measures related to the Skopje earthquake on its agenda. Four days later, on September 27, the Assembly prioritized international action to assist Skopje.

The culmination of this movement came on October 14, when the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on aid to the Yugoslav Government during the reconstruction process. In that historic debate, speeches were heard from representatives of more than 20 countries from all continents, and this date was recorded in the United Nations archives as Skopje Day.

Throughout the centuries, Skopje has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The ancient city of Scupi, which lay between the villages of Zlokuqan and Bardovc and served as the metropolis of the province of Dardania, was completely wiped off the face of the earth by an earthquake in 518. At that time, tremors reached an intensity of 10-11 degrees on the Mercalli scale and destroyed 24 civic fortresses in the region of Dardania, cracking the ground and causing rock masses to roll down from the hills. Later, Skopje rose on its current location.

Another catastrophic earthquake hit the city in 1555, with an intensity of about 10 degrees, leaving it in ruins for the second time.

The third major destruction occurred exactly 63 years ago, on July 26, 1963, when Skopje was shaken by an earthquake of magnitude nine on the Mercalli scale, or six on the Richter scale, with its epicenter in “Macedonia” Square.

After the storm that swept through Skopje on July 21, emergency and civil protection services were mobilized in several areas of the capital, while damage is reported to a number of residential and public buildings.

The Mayor of Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, has ordered a new wave of thorough inspections to avoid the repetition of dangerous situations with damaged roof structures. He stressed that all administrative units of the city that have building and housing inspectors at their disposal have been instructed to start rigorous controls, while the inspection teams of the City of Skopje itself will also be engaged in its areas of responsibility.

“I have issued a clear order to all municipalities of Skopje that have building and housing inspectors, and with our other supervisory services we will assist in implementing strict inspections, first of all where such irregularities have been found,” Gjorgjievski stated.

He admitted that municipal administrations face difficulties due to a lack of staff and technical means to supervise all residential buildings on their own, emphasizing that part of the responsibility should also be transferred to building managers.

Furthermore, Gjorgjievski stressed the need for residential building maintenance companies to carry out periodic roof assessments and compile reports, a practice that would increase transparency and enable early identification of potential risks.

The Mayor recalled that some of the roofs damaged by the recent storm belonged to old buildings, constructed many decades ago, which have never undergone a renovation process.

Regarding compensation, Gjorgjievski invited citizens who have suffered material losses to report their case to their municipality and the Ministry of Interior. After the relevant municipal commissions carry out assessments, the reports will be forwarded to the Government, which will then decide on compensation through the legally prescribed channels.

Over 30 citizens were injured yesterday in Skopje as a result of the strong storm that felled trees and various objects, forcing them to seek medical treatment in several hospital centers in the capital.

At the hospital headed by Nebojsha Nastov, since the onset of bad weather, 22 patients were admitted. Of these, two were hospitalized, while the rest received outpatient care for minor injuries. One of the hospitalized patients underwent surgery due to a palm fracture, while the other, a tourist hit by a falling tree, suffered pelvic injuries that did not require surgery but only non-surgical treatment.

Eleven people presented at the University Clinic “St. Naum of Ohrid,” where 9 were treated on an outpatient basis, one patient went to the operating room, and one tourist remained hospitalized for further observation.

Igor Merxhanovski, head of the Clinic for Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (KARIL), reported that a female patient with head trauma and a fracture of the right cartilage was transferred to the Neurosurgery Clinic for ongoing therapy.

Health Minister Sasho Klekovski provided information on the condition of the injured and the damage caused to hospital structures, which are being repaired. He announced that at the Mother Teresa Clinical Center, specifically at TOARILUC, 11 people from the storm were admitted, three of them with severe fractures receiving appropriate treatment at the clinic. Klekovski added that damages at health centers are also being monitored. At the Clinical Center, a tree fell without causing injuries, while at the psychiatric hospital in Bardovcë, where there were also no casualties, the electricity was cut off for several hours but was later restored.

According to clinic managers, patients presented with cuts and bruises, but their condition was stable. One of them was injured by the collapse of a tree and its branches, another was hit by a metal sheet that flew off the roof, and the third was hurt by falling tiles.

New information has emerged about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of three Kosovo citizens in North Macedonia.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were Ejup Ternava, Cennet Ternava and Fatmire Shabani. They died on Saturday evening after their car ended up submerged in the waters of the Lepenc River.

A relative of the family, Fatmir Beqiri, told Kosovo media that Ejup Tërnava, who was driving, had traveled with his wife to pick up his sister, who was arriving at Skopje Airport. During the journey, they were involved in a fatal incident that resulted in their immediate deaths.

According to him, the last footage recorded by security cameras in Macedonia dates to around 22:38. After that, all trace of them was lost. “Ejup, who was driving, took the wrong route and ended up on a dead-end road. What happened next remains unclear,” Beqiri explained.

He raised serious concerns about conditions at the scene, emphasizing the complete lack of directional signs. “When I arrived there last night, as one of the first people at the scene, I did not see a single road sign. There was no signage whatsoever,” he said.

The three people, originally from Vushtrri, could no longer be reached by their relatives after leaving Skopje International Airport late on Saturday.

Immediately after they were reported missing, Macedonian law enforcement authorities launched a rescue operation. At the same time, family members publicly appealed to the community for help locating them.

After several hours of intensive searching, rescue teams found the vehicle submerged in the Lepenc River. It was a Mercedes GLC with German registration plates.

According to local media reports, after the car was recovered from the water, emergency crews confirmed that three bodies were inside the cabin.

After an extensive investigation and verification of numerous warrants issued by the public prosecutor, sufficient evidence has been gathered to file formal charges. M.V. faces a charge of “murder” under Article 123, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code, while his wife is accused of aiding and abetting the commission of the crime.

The police reconstruction of the scene shows that S.V. initially agreed with the victim to meet in the parking lot. After A.T. entered her vehicle, a few minutes later M.V. appeared, forcefully pulled him out of the car, and attacked him viciously with a knife. The doctor was dealt nine fatal stab wounds, which killed him instantly.

Immediately after the act, the couple coordinated to move the lifeless body. Together they placed the victim in the car and M.V. drove the vehicle to the parking lot of the Zhelezara Polyclinic. There, he moved the body to the driver’s seat and carefully cleaned all traces from the car using an unknown substance. Then, both left the scene, according to sources from the Ministry of Interior.
