The causes of the incident involving the “Ryanair” plane flying from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, which occurred yesterday morning over Macedonia, are still under investigation, Marjan Prposki, chairman of the Committee for the Investigation of Air Accidents and Serious Incidents, said.

According to him, communication with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is continuing without interruption, while the public will be informed in due time of any developments or additional information related to this case.

The “Ryanair” plane, which had departed from Thessaloniki for Memmingen, returned to Thessaloniki immediately after takeoff yesterday after a window came loose next to a passenger during the flight, the company said about the incident, in which one of the travelers suffered minor injuries.

“Ryanair” clarified that the landing in Thessaloniki was carried out without any problems and that the passengers were then returned to the terminal.

In the company’s statement yesterday, published by Greek media, it said: “One traveler requested and received medical assistance after landing in Thessaloniki. To minimize the delay, a replacement aircraft was provided to transport the travelers to Memmingen, which departed from Thessaloniki this morning at 9:35 a.m. local time.”

Media in Thessaloniki, citing passengers’ accounts, reported yesterday that immediately after takeoff, possibly when the plane was flying over Skopje, a loud noise was heard and then a window broke. According to these testimonies, the passenger seated next to it, due to the sudden decompression, was at risk of ending up outside the plane, but was held and saved by fellow passengers.

According to the testimonies, there was panic among the passengers, while the pilot remained calm, reassured the travelers and returned the plane to Thessaloniki airport. Some media reported that the window may have been damaged by an engine problem, after a detached part struck it, but this was not mentioned at all in the airline’s statement.

Media in Thessaloniki also reported that the injured person was a tourist in his 60s and that he is believed to be a Serbian citizen.

During the first six months of this year, Skopje International Airport and Ohrid “St. Paul the Apostle” Airport handled a total of 1,955,648 passengers, marking a 28 percent increase compared with the same period last year. At the same time, 13,167 flights were operated, or 7.6 percent more.

In June alone, the two airports together served 374,714 passengers, representing a 15.6 percent increase compared with the same period last year.

According to TAV Macedonia’s six-month statistical data, the busiest destination from Skopje International Airport is Istanbul, including both IGA and Sabiha Gokcen airports, with a 14.2 percent market share. It is followed by Memmingen, Munich with 4.5 percent, Basel Mulhouse with 4.4 percent, Dortmund with 4.1 percent, Zurich with 4 percent and Frankfurt with 3.9 percent.

The five countries with the largest number of direct flights from Skopje are Germany with 28.5 percent of the market share in total passenger traffic, Turkey with 18 percent, Switzerland with 9.3 percent, Italy with 8.2 percent and Sweden with 5.8 percent.

If Skopje International Airport and “St. Paul the Apostle” Airport are analyzed separately, Skopje Airport recorded annual growth of 28.6 percent, while 1,833,010 passengers were transported through it in the first six months of this year. During the same period, 12,260 flights were operated at this airport, representing a 6.5 percent increase compared with the same period last year. On the other hand, Ohrid Airport registered growth of 18.2 percent, with 122,638 passengers transported from January to June. During this period, 907 flights were operated, which is 26 percent more.

“The 28 percent increase in the number of passengers in the first six months of 2026 is an excellent result and clear confirmation that Macedonia’s airports are on the path of strong and sustainable development. In the aviation industry, double-digit growth in passenger air traffic is an indicator of a successful strategy, growing passenger confidence and attractiveness as a destination for airlines. The fact that Skopje International Airport and Ohrid ‘St. Paul the Apostle’ Airport together served nearly two million passengers in just six months, while also recording a 7.6 percent increase in the number of flights, is the result of our commitment to developing air connectivity, continuously improving services and successful cooperation with our partners. We remain focused on creating new growth opportunities, expanding the destination network and providing a quality experience for passengers, so that Macedonia’s airports continue to exceed expectations in the coming period,” said Nexhat Kurt, general manager of TAV Macedonia, in a written statement.

New security scanners have become operational at Skopje Airport, specifically two computed tomography machines worth around 1 million euros. TAV General Director Nexhat Kurt said that thanks to this investment, the airport is the only one in the Balkans equipped with such devices, significantly increasing passenger safety and speeding up baggage screening.

According to Kurt, during screening passengers will no longer need to remove laptops, tablets and mobile phones from their bags. He stressed that the goal is to reduce travelers’ stress, strengthen the sense of security and ensure that the entire procedure is carried out more quickly and without inconvenience.

Deputy Transport Minister Kaltrina Zekolli-Shaqiri said that this investment of approximately 1 million euros turns Skopje Airport into a regional leader. She underlined that the Government has excellent cooperation with TAV and that, so far, this cooperation has resulted in around 50 million euros in donations, while 97 projects are in the implementation phase across the country.

She also said that cooperation with TAV has enabled investments of 50 million euros in a large number of projects, highlighting as particularly important the modernization, reconstruction and continuous expansion of Ohrid Airport.
