At midday on Wednesday, dozens of vehicles were destroyed by a fire that broke out in the village of Penkova, within the municipality of Selenica.

The flames engulfed a site where vehicles were collected for spare parts, causing considerable material damage.

After the incident was reported, firefighting crews from Selenica, Vlora and Himara were dispatched to the area.

Their intervention made it possible to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding areas, while the operation continued until all active hotspots had been fully extinguished.

The business owner, Tomian Hysaj, said the economic damage amounts to approximately 35 million old lek. He appealed to Selenica Municipality and state institutions to help him cope with the losses.

Arqile Kokalli, head of Civil Emergencies at Selenica Municipality, said cooperation among the firefighting teams helped bring the situation under control and prevent the fire from spreading further.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is expected to be established by an investigation conducted by the relevant authorities.

Opposition to the new territorial reform was once again voiced in Selenica this Saturday. Residents, intellectuals, local officials and village representatives gathered in the town center for the Selenica Assembly, where they discussed the municipality’s future.

The meeting focused on arguments for and against the territorial plan, which envisages dissolving the Municipality of Selenica and merging it with the Municipality of Vlora. Participants also considered the steps they would take to oppose the initiative and preserve Selenica as a separate municipality.

Ilia Bombaj, one of the assembly’s organizers, explained the reasons behind the meeting. Arguing that Selenica should not lose its status, he highlighted the area’s history, territorial size, number of villages and the need for services to be provided as close to residents as possible. Bombaj also referred to statements by MP Ardit Bido, who has supported merging Selenica with Vlora.

Former Selenica mayor Përparim Shametaj also opposed the territorial change. He said that stripping Selenica of its municipal status would not bring development but would instead harm the area and residents’ interests. Shametaj called for citizens’ voices to be taken into account before a final decision is approved.

Residents and intellectuals who spoke at the meeting also called for the proposal to incorporate Selenica into the Municipality of Vlora to be withdrawn. According to them, this would force residents to travel to Vlora even for the simplest administrative procedures, creating considerable difficulties, particularly for the rural population.

At the conclusion of the Selenica Assembly, those present announced that they would continue opposing the reform through institutional channels and civic engagement. They reiterated that their goal is to preserve the Municipality of Selenica as an independent local government unit.

Në qendër të takimit ishin qëndrimet pro dhe kundër projektit territorial, i cili parashikon që Bashkia e Selenicës të shkrihet dhe t’i bashkohet Bashkisë së Vlorës. Pjesëmarrësit shqyrtuan njëkohësisht veprimet që do të ndjekin për ta kundërshtuar këtë nismë dhe për të ruajtur Selenicën si bashki më vete.

Ilia Bombaj, një nga organizatorët e kuvendit, sqaroi shkaqet që çuan në mbajtjen e takimit. Duke argumentuar se Selenica nuk duhet ta humbasë statusin e saj, ai vuri në dukje historinë e zonës, sipërfaqen territoriale, numrin e fshatrave dhe nevojën që shërbimet të ofrohen sa më pranë qytetarëve. Bombaj iu referua gjithashtu deklaratave të deputetit Ardit Bido, i cili ka mbështetur bashkimin e Selenicës me Vlorën.

Kundër ndryshimit territorial u pozicionua edhe ish-kryetari i Bashkisë së Selenicës, Përparim Shametaj. Ai deklaroi se heqja e statusit të bashkisë nuk do të sillte zhvillim, por do të cenonte zonën dhe interesat e banorëve. Shametaj kërkoi që zëri i qytetarëve të merret parasysh përpara miratimit të një vendimi përfundimtar.

Edhe banorët dhe intelektualët që morën fjalën kërkuan të tërhiqet propozimi për përfshirjen e Selenicës në Bashkinë e Vlorës. Sipas tyre, kjo do t’i detyronte qytetarët të udhëtonin drejt Vlorës edhe për procedurat më të thjeshta administrative, duke shkaktuar pengesa të konsiderueshme, sidomos për popullsinë e fshatrave.

Në mbyllje të Kuvendit të Selenicës, të pranishmit njoftuan se do ta vazhdojnë kundërshtimin e reformës përmes rrugëve institucionale dhe angazhimit qytetar. Ata ritheksuan se objektivi i tyre është që Bashkia e Selenicës të ruhet si njësi e pavarur e qeverisjes vendore.
