The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, spoke to citizens via social media this Saturday, discussing the protest, which has reached its 70th day. He described it as the most powerful youth and civic movement to have taken place in Albania since the 1990s.

According to Berisha, the protest has taken on pan-national dimensions, bringing together Albanians living in the country and those in various parts of the world around a shared concern.

He said that through this movement, Albanians’ conscience had also spoken with one voice on environmental issues. Berisha described these as vital matters, although, he said, they had previously been treated as secondary or tertiary concerns.

The Democratic Party leader said that all young Albanians protesting against environmental crimes deserved to be honored with a Freedom Medal. He also praised the civic spirit of the protest, calling it extraordinary.

Berisha emphasized that the protest is demanding the departure of Edi Rama, whom he described as an authoritarian dictator. He also referred to the way others have characterized Albania as an electoral autocracy, a term that, he said, is entirely synonymous with authoritarian dictatorship.

Speaking about the Democratic Party’s position, Berisha said that the political force had issued calls and taken every step to ensure the broadest possible participation by its members and supporters. He explained that Democrats had been invited to participate not as party representatives, but as citizens, while fully respecting the civic character of the protest.

He said he had supported the movement’s demands without reservation, since, according to him, the Democratic Party had waged an all-out battle over the same issues in parliament, in committees, at protests and in public squares.

Regarding the presence of Democrats, Berisha acknowledged that it could have been even larger. Nevertheless, he stated that the majority of participants who had joined and continued to take part in the protest were Democrats.

According to him, PD members and supporters needed some time to adapt to the situation because, alongside the demands he considered justified, the protest also featured slogans equating Edi Rama with Sali Berisha.

Explaining the reasons behind his and the Democratic Party’s call for participation, Berisha first cited the legitimacy of the protest’s demands. As for the slogans, he claimed that they belonged to the Democratic Party’s enemies.

The Democratic leader considered these slogans part of the “opposition to the opposition,” which he called a tool of the government. He added that the same slogan had also been spread by Soros-aligned groups, linking this to his deep hostility toward George Soros’s ideology and positions.

In conclusion, Berisha assured that the Democratic Party would do everything in its power to support the protest.

Sipas Berishës, protesta ka marrë përmasa pan-kombëtare, pasi ka bërë bashkë shqiptarët që jetojnë brenda vendit dhe ata që ndodhen në pjesë të ndryshme të botës, rreth një shqetësimi të përbashkët.

Ai tha se, përmes kësaj lëvizjeje, ndërgjegjja e shqiptarëve u shpreh njëzëri edhe për problematikat mjedisore. Berisha i cilësoi ato çështje jetike, ndonëse më parë, sipas tij, trajtoheshin si dytësore apo tretësore.

Kryedemokrati deklaroi se të gjithë të rinjtë shqiptarë që protestojnë kundër krimeve mjedisore meritojnë të nderohen me një dekoratë lirie. Ai vlerësoi gjithashtu frymën qytetare të protestës, të cilën e quajti të jashtëzakonshme.

Berisha theksoi se protesta kërkon largimin e Edi Ramës, të cilin e përshkroi si diktator autoritar. Ai iu referua edhe cilësimit të Shqipërisë nga të tjerë si një autokraci elektorale, term që, sipas tij, është plotësisht sinonim me diktaturën autoritare.

Duke folur për qëndrimin e Partisë Demokratike, Berisha tha se kjo forcë politike ka bërë thirrje dhe ka ndërmarrë çdo hap për të siguruar një pjesëmarrje sa më të gjerë të anëtarëve dhe mbështetësve të saj. Ai sqaroi se demokratët janë ftuar të marrin pjesë jo si përfaqësues partie, por si qytetarë, duke respektuar tërësisht karakterin qytetar të protestës.

Ai u shpreh se i ka përkrahur pa rezerva kërkesat e kësaj lëvizjeje, pasi Partia Demokratike, sipas tij, ka zhvilluar për të njëjtat çështje një betejë të gjithanshme në parlament, në komisione, në protesta dhe në sheshe.

Lidhur me praninë e demokratëve, Berisha pranoi se ajo mund të kishte qenë edhe më e madhe. Megjithatë, ai deklaroi se shumica e pjesëmarrësve që janë përfshirë dhe vazhdojnë të jenë në protestë janë demokratë.

Sipas tij, anëtarëve dhe mbështetësve të PD-së iu nevojit pak kohë për t’u përshtatur me situatën, sepse, krahas kërkesave që ai i konsideroi të drejta, në protestë u përdorën edhe slogane që barazonin Edi Ramën me Sali Berishën.

Duke shpjeguar arsyet e thirrjes së tij dhe të Partisë Demokratike për pjesëmarrje, Berisha renditi në radhë të parë drejtësinë e kërkesave të protestës. Sa u përket sloganeve, ai pretendoi se ato u përkasin armiqve të PD-së.

Kreu demokrat i konsideroi këto slogane si pjesë të “opozitës së opozitës”, të cilën e quajti vegël të qeverisë. Ai shtoi se i njëjti slogan është përhapur edhe nga grupet sorosiane, duke e lidhur këtë me armiqësinë e tij të madhe ndaj ideologjisë dhe qëndrimeve të George Sorosit.

Në përfundim, Berisha garantoi se Partia Demokratike do të bëjë gjithçka që ka në dorë për ta mbështetur protestën.

Democratic Party Chairman Sali Berisha accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of responsibility for the consequences of the 2014 territorial reform during a discussion with citizens on social media. According to him, the reduction from 410 municipalities and communes to just 61 local government units was carried out not only for electoral interests, but also to achieve what he called the “soft expulsion” of Albanians by cutting off investment and services in rural areas.

Berisha said that removing communes from the organization of local government left rural Albania, where around 49% of the population lived, without investment. He claimed that funding for infrastructure, sewage systems and water supply systems was halted, while support for farmers and agriculture was also withdrawn.

According to the Democratic Party leader, these measures were compounded by a lack of services and the halving of economic assistance. He described this approach as an anti-Albanian policy that has produced catastrophic demographic consequences for the Albanian nation, unprecedented since 1913, which he referred to as the year of the plague or the Black Death.

Citing Eurostat data, Berisha stated that from 2015 to 2024, over a period of 10 years, 1 million and 99 thousand Albanians left for the Schengen Area alone. He added that, if those who emigrated to the United States, Canada, Norway, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and other countries are also included, the number of those who left amounts to 47% of Albanians.

Berisha described this development as the gravest blow to the very existence of the Albanian nation and said the country is being mercilessly emptied of its inhabitants. According to him, this constitutes a “soft genocide,” created through calculated conditions that drove Albanians to leave Albania.

In conclusion, the Democratic Party chairman called on Albanians to contribute to Edi Rama’s removal as soon as possible and for the prime minister to be tried for genocide against Albanians.

Berisha tha se heqja e komunave nga organizimi i pushtetit vendor la pa investime Shqipërinë rurale, ku jetonte rreth 49% e popullsisë. Ai pretendoi se u ndal financimi për infrastrukturën, kanalizimet dhe ujësjellësit, ndërsa u hoq edhe mbështetja për fermerët dhe bujqësinë.

Sipas kreut të PD-së, këtyre masave iu shtuan mungesa e shërbimeve dhe përgjysmimi i ndihmës ekonomike. Ai e cilësoi këtë qasje si një politikë antishqiptare që ka prodhuar pasoja demografike katastrofale për kombin shqiptar, të papara që prej vitit 1913, të cilin e përmendi si vitin e mortajës së zezë apo të vdekjes së zezë.

Duke cituar të dhënat e Eurostat, Berisha deklaroi se nga viti 2015 deri në vitin 2024, pra brenda 10 viteve, vetëm drejt hapësirës Schengen janë larguar 1 milion e 99 mijë shqiptarë. Ai shtoi se, po të përfshihen edhe personat që kanë emigruar në Shtetet e Bashkuara, Kanada, Norvegji, Lindjen e Mesme, Afrikë, Australi dhe vende të tjera, numri i të larguarve arrin në 47% të shqiptarëve.

Berisha e konsideroi këtë zhvillim si goditjen më të rëndë ndaj vetë ekzistencës së kombit shqiptar dhe tha se vendi po boshatiset pa mëshirë nga banorët e tij. Sipas tij, bëhet fjalë për një “gjenocid të butë”, të krijuar përmes kushteve të kalkuluara që i shtynë shqiptarët të largohen nga Shqipëria.

Në përfundim, kryetari i Partisë Demokratike u bëri thirrje shqiptarëve të kontribuojnë për largimin sa më të shpejtë të Edi Ramës dhe që kryeministri të gjykohet për gjenocid ndaj shqiptarëve.

The Democratic Party will pursue a new territorial reform aimed at promoting the development of rural areas, bringing services closer to citizens and helping to repopulate the country, DP Chairman Sali Berisha said.

During a press conference at Democratic Party headquarters, Berisha criticized the way the 2014 territorial reform was implemented. He claimed that the changes not only failed to reduce local government spending but also led to an increase in staff and a greater financial burden on taxpayers.

According to figures he presented, around 19,000 people worked in the 410 local government units before 2014. After these units were reduced to 61 municipalities, the number of employees reached around 41,000.

“Not only was the burden on taxpayers not reduced, it doubled because political operatives were hired,” Berisha said.

The Democratic Party chairman said the DP intends to work with both other opposition forces and the international community to draft a territorial reform proposal that, in his view, would best serve citizens’ interests.

“We will insist that this reform be aimed at repopulating Albania, bringing services as close as possible to citizens and creating real opportunities for the development of rural Albania,” he said.

Another issue addressed by Berisha was electoral reform. He announced that the opposition is continuing preparations to draft a new electoral code.

Berisha said he was convinced that Prime Minister Edi Rama would not approve changes that undermine his power. Nevertheless, he stressed that the opposition would present citizens with a proposal that, in his view, meets the highest international standards.

Gjatë një konference për mediat në selinë e Partisë Demokratike, Berisha kundërshtoi mënyrën se si u zbatua reforma territoriale e vitit 2014. Ai pretendoi se ndryshimet jo vetëm që nuk i reduktuan shpenzimet e administratës vendore, por sollën shtim të punonjësve dhe rritje të barrës financiare ndaj taksapaguesve.

Sipas të dhënave të paraqitura prej tij, përpara vitit 2014, në 410 njësitë e qeverisjes vendore punonin rreth 19 mijë persona. Pas reduktimit të këtyre njësive në 61 bashki, numri i të punësuarve arriti në rreth 41 mijë.

“Jo vetëm që nuk u pakësua barra e taksapaguesve, por ajo u dyfishua, sepse u punësuan patronazhistët”, deklaroi Berisha.

Kryetari i demokratëve bëri të ditur se PD-ja synon të bashkëpunojë si me forcat e tjera opozitare, ashtu edhe me komunitetin ndërkombëtar, për hartimin e një propozimi territorial që, sipas tij, t’u shërbejë sa më mirë interesave të qytetarëve.

“Ne do të insistojmë që kjo reformë të jetë një reformë për ripopullimin e Shqipërisë, për shërbime sa më afër qytetarit dhe për mundësi reale të zhvillimit të Shqipërisë rurale”, u shpreh ai.

Një tjetër çështje e trajtuar nga Berisha ishte reforma zgjedhore. Ai njoftoi se opozita po vazhdon përgatitjet për hartimin e një kodi të ri zgjedhor.

Berisha tha se është i bindur që kryeministri Edi Rama nuk do të miratojë ndryshime që cenojnë pushtetin e tij. Megjithatë, ai theksoi se opozita do t’u paraqesë qytetarëve një projekt që, sipas tij, plotëson standardet më të mira ndërkombëtare.

Sali Berisha reacted to the decision to appoint a former senior Democratic Party official to head the National Tourism Agency, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of pursuing a policy of corrupting the opposition.

Responding to journalist Isa Myzyraj’s question about the appointment of the DP’s former secretary and former Leadership member, the Democratic Party leader said that, in his view, “corrupting the opposition, imprisoning the opposition and destroying it are the main policies of the dictator Edi Rama.”

According to Berisha, this policy involves people who “are bought and sold according to the government’s market.” Nevertheless, he stressed that the opposition remains unwavering in its confrontation with the ruling majority.

“I am certain that the opposition stands more determined and more invincible than ever and is ready to do everything to remove him from power,” Berisha said.

In the same statement, the DP leader also spoke about developments within the Socialist Party. He praised, in his words, “those socialists who burned the documents of the party of crime,” while describing Edi Rama as “politically hopeless.”

Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha placed territorial reform at the center of a conference with experts, where he also presented the position of the DP working group on the territorial division.

He referred in particular to the protest by residents of Poliçan, who opposed the Socialist Party’s proposal to dissolve the municipality and burned PS membership cards.

According to Berisha, territorial reform is of decisive importance for local communities and Albanian society, while its current implementation has been transformed into a mechanism that has contributed to the depopulation of the country. He said that Edi Rama had realized this was a lost battle and that the reform had created widespread dissatisfaction.

Berisha said that the resistance of Poliçan’s residents should also encourage other communities which, according to him, the government uses for electoral interests and the centralization of power. He called on residents of other municipalities to follow the same example, stressing that a tyrant cannot make decisions to the detriment of citizens’ interests.

Berisha said that the 2014 territorial reform, which he described as an anti-reform, had become a major factor in the emptying of Albania. According to him, it was transformed into a pillar of Vaso Çubrilloviç’s platform for removing Albanians from their own lands.

Referring to the writings of the racist and criminal academic, he said that at the heart of this platform were the deterioration of services, the lack of infrastructure and making life as difficult as possible for Albanians in their settlements, including their lands in Kosovo.

He recalled that the 2014 territorial division reduced the 410 local government units—municipalities and communes combined—to just 61 municipalities, or local government units. Berisha described this as the harshest blow against rural Albania and, more broadly, against the country, since, according to him, there can be no developed Albania without a developed rural area.

Berisha claimed that more than 45 percent of the population had lost services and direct links with a government represented by people elected by them. He added that residents had also lost the prospect of living in the communes where they had their homes, while the development of rural Albania had come to a standstill.

As an example, he mentioned the former commune of Shëngjergj, which is now the village of Shëngjergj, saying that not a single lek had been invested in the area from 2013 to the present. Berisha stressed that Shëngjergj and the surrounding areas have some of the country’s most extraordinary mountain tourism potential, but the road beyond Shëngjergj is difficult to pass.

He called on the media to visit every former commune, claiming that no investment had been made there. Regarding Baldushk, Berisha cited as the only investment what he described as Erion Veliaj’s deception: the construction of a museum which, according to him, was found filled with bags of bay leaves, with the aim of stealing 400 million lek.

Berisha also mentioned Preza and Ndroq, where, according to him, life and development have remained at a standstill, leaving residents with only the option of leaving. He said these communities had no services, while their market had not been facilitated.

According to him, 3.2 billion euros were stolen through the paving stones used in city centers. Berisha declared that with 3.2 billion euros, more than 8,000 kilometers of roads could have been built in rural Albania, along with more than 1,000 educational facilities and health centers, all properly registered.

He concluded by saying that over the past 14 years, the investments carried out could be counted on one’s fingers.

Sipas Berishës, reforma territoriale ka rëndësi vendimtare për komunitetet lokale dhe për shoqërinë shqiptare, ndërsa zbatimi i saj aktual është shndërruar në një mekanizëm që ka ndikuar në shpopullimin e vendit. Ai tha se Edi Rama e ka kuptuar se kjo është një betejë e humbur dhe se reforma ka krijuar pakënaqësi të madhe.

Berisha deklaroi se qëndresa e banorëve të Poliçanit duhet të nxisë edhe komunitetet e tjera që, sipas tij, qeveria i përdor për interesa elektorale dhe për centralizimin e pushtetit. Ai u bëri thirrje banorëve të bashkive të tjera të ndjekin të njëjtin shembull, duke theksuar se një tiran nuk mund të marrë vendime në dëm të interesave të qytetarëve.

Berisha tha se reforma territoriale e vitit 2014, të cilën e cilësoi si antireformë, u kthye në një faktor kryesor të zbrazjes së Shqipërisë. Sipas tij, ajo u shndërrua në një shtyllë të platformës së Vaso Çubrilloviçit për largimin e shqiptarëve nga trojet e tyre.

Duke iu referuar shkrimeve të akademikut racist dhe kriminel, ai tha se në qendër të kësaj platforme ishin përkeqësimi i shërbimeve, mungesa e infrastrukturës dhe vështirësimi maksimal i jetës së shqiptarëve në vendbanimet e tyre, përfshirë edhe trojet në Kosovë.

Ai rikujtoi se ndarja territoriale e vitit 2014 reduktoi 410 njësitë vendore, bashki dhe komuna të marra së bashku, në vetëm 61 bashki ose njësi të qeverisjes vendore. Berisha e përshkroi këtë si goditjen më të rëndë ndaj Shqipërisë rurale dhe, në tërësi, ndaj vendit, pasi sipas tij nuk mund të ketë një Shqipëri të zhvilluar pa një zonë rurale të zhvilluar.

Berisha pretendoi se mbi 45 përqind e popullsisë humbi shërbimet dhe lidhjen e drejtpërdrejtë me një qeverisje të përfaqësuar nga njerëz të zgjedhur prej saj. Berisha theksoi se Shëngjergji dhe zonat përreth kanë disa prej potencialeve malore turistike më të jashtëzakonshme në vend, por rruga përtej Shëngjergjit është vështirësisht e kalueshme.

Ai u bëri thirrje mediave të vizitojnë çdo ish-komunë, duke pretenduar se atje nuk është kryer asnjë investim. Për Baldushkun, Berisha përmendi si të vetmin investim atë që e cilësoi si mashtrim të Erion Veliajt: ndërtimin e një muzeu që, sipas tij, u gjet i mbushur me thasë dafine, me qëllim vjedhjen e 400 milionë lekëve.

Berisha përmendi gjithashtu Prezën dhe Ndroqin, ku sipas tij jeta dhe zhvillimi kanë mbetur në vend, duke u lënë banorëve vetëm alternativën e largimit. Ai tha se këto komunitete nuk kanë shërbime, ndërsa tregu i tyre nuk është lehtësuar.

Sipas tij, 3.2 miliardë euro u vodhën përmes pllakave të qendrave të qyteteve. Berisha deklaroi se me 3.2 miliardë euro mund të ishin ndërtuar në Shqipërinë rurale mbi 8 mijë kilometra rrugë, si dhe mbi 1 mijë objekte arsimore dhe qendra shëndetësore, të gjitha të regjistruara.

Ai përmbylli duke thënë se gjatë 14 viteve investimet e kryera mund të numërohen as me gishtërinjtë e duarve.

Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha reacted to Ermal Beqiri’s arrest in France during a press briefing, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of collaborating with criminals.

According to Berisha, Ergys Agasi is “Albania’s top mafia boss,” while AKSHI, he claimed, had been turned into the private property of the head of government.

Berisha said the detention of Beqiri, whom he described as a relative of Edi and Linda Rama and Agasi’s closest associate, demonstrates the threat that Albanian organised crime poses to the region and Europe.

The Democratic Party leader said that on April 24, 2026, he had denounced the fact that Ergys Agasi and Ermal Beqiri were not internationally wanted, even though the arrest warrant against them was dated December 25, 2025. He added that the situation had still not changed four months later.

Berisha went on to claim that Agasi had purchased two private aircraft in Austria in April. According to him, such a purchase requires approval from several Austrian institutions in a country with one of the most firmly established rules of law.

He also said that in June, Agasi had registered one of the aircraft and his business in Slovenia. Berisha said that a series of flights through NATO airspace and to European Union countries had been confirmed during those months.

According to him, Agasi continues his activities undisturbed, directing them at times from Durrës, at times from Surrel and at times from Manza.

As for Ermal Beqiri, Berisha claimed that he had embezzled €200 million from AKSHI, which he called “the AKSHI of the Lindas, of AKSHI’s Linda and Surrel’s Linda, who controlled AKSHI.” He added that this was the success Edi Rama promoted through propaganda, presenting Beqiri as a success story.
