Traffic monitoring cameras under the “Safe City” system began operating today in part of the municipality of Debrca, while their activation in Ohr is expected soon.

The Ministry of Interior announced that the security equipment was put into operation following the completion of final testing. It covers the section of highway between the villages of Gorenica and Trebenista, within the municipality of Debrca.

Meanwhile, cameras have also been installed on roads in Ohr and the surrounding areas. Technical inspections and final tests are currently underway, after which the system will also become operational in this region.

The “Safe City” system aims to provide continuous and stricter traffic monitoring, identify traffic violations and strengthen discipline among road users. Its implementation is also expected to improve road safety and help reduce the number of accidents.

The Interior Ministry appealed to all drivers to comply with traffic laws and regulations, thereby contributing to safer roads across the country.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a public announcement regarding a new wave of “phishing” cyberattacks, which have been observed recently. These attacks use various communication channels such as SMS, email, websites, mobile apps, and social media platforms to reach potential victims.

According to authorities, the fraudulent messages are disguised as if sent by the Department of Motor Vehicles, appearing as notifications from the “Safe City” system. These communications include a fake link that redirects the recipient to a page where they are asked to make a payment for a traffic fine that does not actually exist.

The Ministry addresses citizens with a series of recommendations to avoid falling prey to these scams. They are advised to be vigilant when browsing the internet, not to click on links or messages of suspicious origin, and never to disclose personal data through unofficial channels. Such data includes bank card numbers, passwords, and identification codes. Citizens are also urged to carefully verify the sender’s address, as legitimate institutions and companies always operate with official domains. Another essential protective measure is the activation of two-factor authentication (2FA) for online accounts, as well as immediate notification to competent authorities or the relevant bank in case they encounter suspicious communications.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs also clarifies that real SMS alerts for detected violations must necessarily come from the sender labeled “MVR-SC”. The content of these official messages always includes the license plate of the vehicle that committed the offense, as well as a link starting with the exact format “https://safecountry.mvr.gov.mk…”.

The Cybercrime Sector within the Ministry of Internal Affairs is conducting intensive investigations and taking necessary actions to detect and penalize the persons responsible for this fraudulent scheme.

According to police data, around 40 modern cameras have been installed in the area covered by Ohrid Traffic Police. They are located at the city’s main entry and exit points, on the routes toward Bitola, Skopje, Kichevo and Saint Naum, as well as on the busiest boulevards and urban road segments leading to tourist settlements and beaches.

In recent days, technical tests of the cameras have been carried out in the settlement of Rača, on the road leading to the beaches and Saint Naum, as well as at the entrance to Ohrid from the direction of Bitola. The Ohrid Public Security Bureau says they will soon move into full operation.

The spokesperson for the Ohrid Public Security Bureau, Stefan Dimoski, said that the technical checks of the cameras at these two locations have already been completed. Following assessments and recommendations from expert teams, they are expected to be actively integrated into the “Safe City” system. Meanwhile, other equipment installed throughout Ohrid and Struga is also being verified in parallel.

The goal is for the entire system to be fully functional before the peak of the tourist season, when traffic flow at the city entrances and in beach areas reaches its highest level.

This development is considered particularly important for the thousands of domestic and foreign tourists arriving in Ohrid every day during July and August, but also for the city’s residents themselves, as these routes are among the busiest during the summer.

The system is designed for automatic traffic monitoring, recording violations and increasing road safety. According to the police, the main objective remains reducing the number of traffic accidents, especially those with the most serious consequences, as well as encouraging greater traffic discipline among drivers.

For motorists, the activation of this system will mean the need for constant compliance with speed limits, road signs and other traffic rules.

Although this period so far has served for technical testing without the automatic imposition of sanctions, police warn that once all checks are completed, the system will begin regular operation.

As Ohrid welcomes tens of thousands of visitors during the summer months, the launch of “Safe City” is expected to be one of the main mechanisms for coping with increased traffic pressure and improving safety for all road users.
