During the day yesterday, on the order of the competent prosecutor, searches were carried out at five locations in Skopje, including two healthcare institutions.

As part of this operation, three people were arrested, two of whom are doctors.

Based on the evidence secured, the public prosecutor has issued an order to launch an investigative procedure against four people.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, three of the suspects are charged with the criminal offenses of “criminal association” and “violation of industrial property rights and unauthorized use of a foreign company name,” while the fourth person is suspected of the criminal offense of “violation of industrial property rights and unauthorized use of a foreign company name.”

At the request of the competent public prosecutor, the preliminary proceedings judge at the Basic Criminal Court Skopje has imposed precautionary measures on all four suspects.

This case was opened in April of this year, when an order was issued to conduct an investigative procedure against 17 individuals and six legal entities, for whom there are reasonable grounds to suspect that they were involved in committing the criminal offenses of “criminal association,” “violation of industrial property rights and unauthorized use of a foreign company name,” and “taking bribes.”

The Prosecutor’s Office said in its statement that the investigation is continuing in order to fully clarify all the circumstances of this case and determine whether other people may also be involved.

The indictment states that the first defendant, in the capacity of Chairman of the Board of Directors and member of the Credit Board, the second defendant as Chairman of the Credit Board, and the third defendant as Chairman of the Risk Management Committee and member of the Board of Directors, during the period from 2013 until the second half of 2019, acted contrary to the provisions of the Law on Banks and the bank’s internal acts.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, they approved loans for credible legal entities and persons connected to them, without the appropriate analyses and without the necessary collateral. The indictment also states that they concealed the real financial condition and risks, while reporting inaccurate data to the National Bank. Through these actions, they significantly worsened the financial situation of Eurostandard Bank AD Skopje.

It further emphasizes that through these actions they contributed to the bank’s bankruptcy, as well as damage to creditors in the amount of 1,662,417,664 denars.

Meanwhile, according to the indictment, the fourth defendant, in the role of Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eurostandard Bank AD Skopje, in the period from 2013 to 2019, exercised his powers negligently and failed to carry out proper supervision, thereby acting contrary to the obligations set out in the Banking Law.

The Prosecutor’s Office announcement adds that, through this approach, he enabled the approval of problematic loans, the assumption of excessive credit risks, the inaccurate presentation of the bank’s financial condition, as well as the failure to implement legal and internal lending procedures. In this way, he contributed to the creation of clear insolvency, the reduction of the bank’s own funds, and its bankruptcy by force of law.

According to the initial findings, the incident occurred on June 22, when the suspects took part in violent acts against the minor, attacking him with punches and kicks, and also inflicting cuts on his body with a knife.

The PPO said the proposed measures include a ban on leaving their place of residence or stay, an obligation to report periodically to a designated official or before a competent state authority, temporary confiscation of a travel document or another document for crossing the state border, a ban on going to the place where the criminal-legal incident occurred, as well as a ban on approaching or establishing any contact with the injured child and his parents.

At the same time, according to the PPO, forensic examinations of the secured traces are continuing, while other actions are also being taken with the aim of collecting evidence.

According to the prosecution’s information, on June 25, near the village of Letevci, during an incident of domestic violence, the suspect is believed to have intentionally taken his wife’s life. That evening, he had picked her up by car from the place where she worked and then taken her to an area that was not easily accessible, where he physically attacked her.

He is suspected of having applied strong pressure to her neck with a part of his body, while at the same time covering her mouth and nose, making it impossible for her to breathe. The victim resisted and tried to defend herself, but was unable to get away and, according to the suspicions, died at the scene as a result of suffocation.

After the incident, the 51-year-old is suspected of hiding her body under branches among the trees, while a day later he reported his wife missing to the police.

On June 27, he allegedly told three acquaintances that he knew his wife’s whereabouts because, according to his claim, she had appeared to him in a dream and told him where he should go to find her. Afterwards, all of them went together by car to the place where the woman’s body was spotted and reported the case to the police.

The public prosecutor believes that in this case there are circumstances indicating a risk of flight, the possibility of obstructing the criminal proceedings through influencing witnesses, as well as the risk that the suspect may commit another criminal offense.

The prosecution also took into account the nature and gravity of the crime, as well as the manner in which it is suspected to have been committed, assessing that there had been a prior period of planning, along with actions taken after the incident, when the suspect hid the victim’s body. According to the prosecution, he had at the same time created the false impression of a worried husband who was actively taking part in the search for her and trying to build an alibi in order to avoid criminal prosecution. For these reasons, the public prosecutor submitted to the pre-trial judge at the Basic Criminal Court in Skopje a proposal to impose a detention measure.

According to the statement, precautionary measures were recently imposed on two suspects, while house arrest was ordered for another person. In this way, it was emphasized that everyone involved in the proceedings is under the supervision of the institutions.

The investigation is linked to the operation carried out on June 18 at several locations in Skopje, where the Financial Police and the Ministry of Interior, under the direction of the Prosecution for Organized Crime and Corruption, conducted searches of homes and business premises following a criminal complaint filed earlier.

Eight legal entities are also involved in this case, suspected of the criminal offenses of “embezzlement in office” and “money laundering.” According to the investigation, former FFM president Ilço Gjorgjioski, together with a finance official of the federation, is suspected of having embezzled more than 127 million denars during the period 2015–2018.
