A 46-year-old man lost his life on Friday afternoon in Marglliç, Patos.

The victim, E.D., an electrician by profession, is suspected of having been exposed to electric current while working on a utility pole.

The exact circumstances of the incident have not yet been determined. For the time being, it remains unclear whether the 46-year-old suffered cardiac arrest or whether his death was caused by contact with electricity.

Police forces went to the scene and have begun working to fully clarify the causes and circumstances of the incident.

Patos Municipality held a public hearing with citizens on Wednesday afternoon as part of consultations on the new administrative-territorial reform, which envisages the merger of Patos with Fier Municipality.

The meeting began with remarks by Municipal Council Chairman Armand Ahmetaj, followed by Mayor Fatjon Duro. He presented several arguments in support of preserving Patos as a separate municipality, citing financial viability, the economy, accessibility and territorial cohesion.

The citizens, municipal councillors and representatives of interest groups present at the hearing unanimously expressed their opposition to the merger with Fier. According to them, Patos is defined not merely by a sign, index or distance in kilometres, but represents history and identity.

Mayor Duro and the Municipal Council will continue the public consultation process in the coming days, including in the administrative units.

Residents of Patos have protested for the fourth time against the plan to merge the Patos Municipality with the Fier Municipality. They are demanding that the city continue to exist as a separate local government unit and oppose the changes envisaged as part of the territorial reform.

Residents fear that decisions will be made by the headquarters of the new municipality and that Patos, along with the surrounding areas, will receive less attention.

“The money and investments should be used to solve the problems we have here in Patos,” said one of the participants in the protest. He called for decision-making regarding the city to remain in the hands of the community.

Pensioners also took part in the gathering, expressing their concerns about Patos’s future and the quality of services following a possible administrative merger. They believe that moving decision-making away from the city could lead to less attention being paid to residents’ needs.

The protesters link their opposition not only to administrative and financial issues, but also to Patos’s historical identity.

The city has a close connection with the oil industry and with the history of the workers in this sector, a heritage that, according to residents, must be protected.

“Here in Patos, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first strike by oil workers. This history does not appear to be recognized. Why do they want to destroy the oil workers’ city of Patos?” the protesters said.

Residents stress that a merger with Fier would not simply be an administrative reorganization. According to them, the change would directly affect investment planning, the provision of public services, and the setting of priorities for the territory.

They are calling for Patos’s local autonomy to be preserved and for the community’s wishes to be taken into consideration before any decision is made. The protesters have warned that they will continue their opposition in the coming days.

If their demands are not heard, residents are warning of an escalation of the protests. Among the possible forms of response, they have not ruled out blocking the roads connecting Patos with the surrounding areas.

Firefighting teams from three different municipalities were engaged this afternoon to battle a powerful fire that broke out at a livestock farm in the “29 Marsi” neighborhood of Patos. According to sources from the emergency service, strong winds favored the rapid spread of the flames, making local assistance insufficient and forcing a call for support from Fier and Roskovec.

About 25 firefighters and 5 specialized vehicles are currently on the ground, trying to bring the situation under control. In addition to the main farm structures, the fire has also consumed forage reserves and the livestock feed warehouse.

The farm is owned by the Sanxhaku family. Authorities have not yet issued an official assessment of the extent of material damage, as the operation to fully neutralize the fire source and prevent possible rekindles continues intensively.
