At the protest held outside the Prime Minister’s Office, News24 journalist Osman Stafa addressed participants with a powerful speech that was interrupted several times by cheers from the crowd.

In his speech, Stafa focused on corruption, the population exodus and the difficulties facing the healthcare system, while urging citizens not to end their resistance.

The journalist said the 73 days of protest constitute the greatest and most beautiful “World Cup” in the country’s history because the battle is being waged for Albania and against the corruption that has brought it to its knees. According to him, the eagle has always been seen on the flag, but the protesters are the real eagles. He stressed that even if only one participant remains in the square, that person deserves to be honored, while calling on those present not to be swayed by words and to continue standing firm.

Stafa said the square was packed as never before and noted that August is usually a month for vacations, not protests. He asked what had been done to Albania that had forced Albanians to rise up for their country in the middle of summer, adding that the cup is now full and cannot hold any more.

According to him, a system has been created in which honesty is seen as madness: if you become a director or minister and do not steal, you are considered a fool. He said citizens want an Albania without corruption or theft, where there is no depopulation and where education and healthcare function properly.

The journalist described it as tragic for people to see their brother, father or mother at the end of their life without having access to cancer medication. He said there are around 3,000 people with cancer in Albania who lack palliative care and compassion.

Stafa said that when mothers, women or girls need therapy, they are told to wait for it “until the end of the year,” asking whether cancer can wait. He added that officials send their own relatives abroad, while Albanians face being given the runaround and the double pain of illness and being unable to do anything about it.

Në fjalën e tij, Stafa vuri në qendër korrupsionin, largimin e popullsisë dhe vështirësitë e sistemit shëndetësor, ndërsa u kërkoi qytetarëve të mos e ndërpresin qëndresën.

Gazetari tha se 73 ditët e protestës përbëjnë “botërorin” më të bukur dhe më të madh të historisë së vendit, sepse beteja po zhvillohet për Shqipërinë dhe kundër korrupsionit që e ka fundosur atë. Sipas tij, shqiponja është parë gjithmonë në flamur, por shqiponjat e vërteta janë protestuesit. Ai theksoi se edhe nëse në shesh mbetet vetëm një pjesëmarrës, ai meriton të nderohet, ndërsa u bëri thirrje të pranishmëve të mos ndikohen nga fjalët dhe të vazhdojnë të qëndrojnë.

Stafa deklaroi se sheshi ishte mbushur si asnjëherë më parë dhe kujtoi se gushti zakonisht është muaj pushimesh, jo protestash. Ai ngriti pyetjen se çfarë i është bërë Shqipërisë që shqiptarët janë detyruar të ngrihen në mes të verës për vendin e tyre, duke shtuar se kupa tashmë është mbushur dhe nuk mban më.

Sipas tij, është krijuar një sistem ku ndershmëria shihet si marrëzi: nëse bëhesh drejtor apo ministër dhe nuk vjedh, të konsiderojnë budalla. Ai tha se qytetarët kërkojnë një Shqipëri pa korrupsion e vjedhje, ku të mos ketë shpopullim dhe ku arsimi e shëndetësia të funksionojnë.

Gazetari e cilësoi tragjike që njerëzit të shohin vëllanë, babanë apo mamanë në fund të jetës, pa pasur në dispozicion ilaçe kundër kancerit. Ai tha se në Shqipëri ka rreth 3 mijë persona me kancer, të cilëve u mungojnë shërbimi paliativ dhe dhembshuria.

Stafa u shpreh se, kur nënat, gratë apo vajzat kanë nevojë për terapi, atyre u thuhet ta presin atë “në fund të vitit”, duke pyetur nëse kanceri mund të presë. Ai shtoi se të afërmit e tyre i dërgojnë jashtë vendit, ndërsa shqiptarët përballen me sorollatje dhe dhimbjen e dyfishtë të sëmundjes dhe pamundësisë për të bërë diçka.

For two months without interruption, Albanian citizens have been raising their voices to express their dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Edi Rama, calling for his resignation.

In an interview with “News24,” journalist Osman Stafa highlighted the protesters’ determination to distance themselves from the entire political class that has governed for 36 years and which, according to them, is the source of Albanians’ daily hardships.

“Citizens are becoming increasingly convinced that Albanian politics bears direct responsibility for the current living conditions. Their demand is not limited solely to the departure of the head of government but extends to opposition against the entire 36-year-old political establishment,” he said.

Stafa also drew attention to the prime minister’s unfulfilled pledges, citing uninterrupted water supply, the legalization process and free healthcare as examples.

“At the end of every term he wins, Rama organizes a meeting, puts the administration at the center of criticism or repeats several promises, but then everything is forgotten. A political leader’s honor is embodied in keeping his word. What happened to the water supply promised back in his first term? What happened to the legalizations? Where is free healthcare?… The ‘three-headed monster’ is swallowing up our rivers through the construction of hydropower plants, while protected areas are being damaged indiscriminately… What trust does he expect now?” journalist Stafa concluded.

Në një bisedë për “News24”, gazetari Osman Stafa vuri në dukje vendosmërinë e protestuesve, të cilët synojnë të distancohen nga e gjithë klasa politike që ka qeverisur për 36 vite dhe që sipas tyre është burimi i vështirësive të përditshme të shqiptarëve.

“Qytetarët po binden gjithnjë e më shumë se politika shqiptare mban përgjegjësi të drejtpërdrejtë për kushtet aktuale të jetesës. Kërkesa nuk kufizohet vetëm te largimi i kreut të qeverisë, por shtrihet në opozitë ndaj gjithë establishmentit politik 36-vjeçar”, theksoi ai.

Stafa tërhoqi vëmendjen edhe te zotimet e pambajtura të kryeministrit, duke përmendur si shembuj furnizimin e pandërprerë me ujë, procesin e legalizimeve dhe shërbimin shëndetësor pa pagesë.

“Në fund të çdo mandati të fituar, Rama organizon një mbledhje, vë në qendër të kritikave administratën apo ripërsërit disa premtime, por më pas gjithçka bie në harresë. Besa e një lideri politik materializohet në fjalën e dhënë. Ku mbeti uji i premtuar që në mandatin e hershëm, ç’ndodhi me legalizimet, ku është shëndetësia falas?… ‘Përbindëshi me tre koka’ po na gllabëron lumenjtë me ndërtimin e hidrocentraleve, ndërkohë që zonat e mbrojtura po dëmtohen pa kriter… Çfarë bese kërkon ai tani”?- përfundoi gazetari Stafa.

Stafa stated that as soon as he finished filming and set off for Elbasan, he was followed by a vehicle with licence plate AB489YZ. According to his account, the car blocked his way and forced him to stop.

The journalist said he recorded for 20 seconds an excavator extracting aggregates from the Shkumbin River. After getting into his car and joining the road to travel towards Elbasan, a black SUV came up aggressively behind him and flashed its lights to signal that he should stop. He continued driving, while the vehicle came very close on his left side and then pulled in front of him, cutting him off. Stafa said he reversed his car several metres, passed the SUV on the right and continued on his way. According to him, the pursuit lasted around 1 km.

In the report filed with Elbasan Police, Stafa requested a full investigation into the incident, the identification of the people in the vehicle, and the collection and preservation of all evidence. He also called on the responsible institutions to check whether the activity filmed on the Shkumbin River was being carried out in accordance with the law.

The journalist stressed that such actions, which he described as resembling mafia-style acts, would not intimidate him. Stafa said he would continue his work with dedication, without fearing anyone, and would verify and publish in the media every report he receives from citizens. He concluded by stating that such “mafia-style” threats do not frighten him.

Stafa deklaron se, sapo përfundoi filmimet dhe u nis drejt Elbasanit, u ndoq nga një automjet me targë AB489YZ. Sipas rrëfimit të tij, makina i bllokoi rrugën dhe e detyroi të ndalonte.

Gazetari tregoi se regjistroi për 20 sekonda një eskavator që po nxirrte inerte nga lumi Shkumbin. Pasi hipi në makinë dhe doli në rrugë për të udhëtuar drejt Elbasanit, një fuoristradë e zezë iu vendos pas në mënyrë të dhunshme dhe i sinjalizoi me drita që të ndalonte. Ai vijoi lëvizjen, ndërsa automjeti iu afrua shumë nga krahu i majtë dhe më pas i doli përpara, duke i prerë rrugën. Stafa tha se u tërhoq disa metra mbrapsht me makinën e tij, e kaloi fuoristradën nga ana e djathtë dhe vazhdoi rrugën. Sipas tij, ndjekja zgjati rreth 1 km.

Në kallëzimin e paraqitur në Policinë e Elbasanit, Stafa ka kërkuar zbardhjen e plotë të ngjarjes, identifikimin e personave që gjendeshin në automjet dhe mbledhjen e administrimin e çdo prove. Ai u ka bërë thirrje gjithashtu institucioneve përgjegjëse që të kontrollojnë nëse aktiviteti i filmuar në lumin Shkumbin zhvillohej në përputhje me ligjin.

Gazetari theksoi se veprime të tilla, të cilat i cilësoi të ngjashme me akte mafioze, nuk do ta frikësojnë. Stafa u shpreh se do ta vazhdojë me përkushtim punën e tij, pa pasur frikë nga askush, si dhe do të verifikojë e publikojë në media çdo denoncim që merr nga qytetarët. Ai përfundoi duke deklaruar se kërcënime të tilla “alla mafioze” nuk e trembin.

During his speech, Stafa took aim at the way the ruling majority has labeled the protesters, in his view, stressing that those in the square are young people who want to build their lives in Albania, families who aim to live here, pensioners, and citizens seeking greater social support.

He also spoke about concerns related to corruption, conditions in hospitals, and the economic hardships affecting some segments of society, describing the protest as a voice for dignity and for a different Albania.

“You are facing a prime minister who calls you crows and ravens. But who are they? Are they the youth who want their future to be in Albania? Are they the young people who want to start their families in Albania? Who are the crows and ravens? Are they the citizens who demand that corruption be brought to an end? Are they the pensioners asking for their fundamental right, money to buy medicine? Are they those mothers with orphaned children who cannot make ends meet? Are they the patients who go to hospitals and find no medicines or equipment? No, no, here are the eagles fighting for dignity and for a different Albania. They are eagles seeking dignity for the future. Have you seen what luxury spending, what kind of life they live? Stand firm, resist, fight for your future. You are the most beautiful eagles of that flag that flies and demands that the future be in Albania. They do not tire of stealing, and you, like eagles, must remain in the square until the end,” he said, among other things.

Stafa went on to encourage those present to remain at the protest and not to interrupt their civic engagement, describing them as “eagles” fighting for the country’s future.

Gjatë fjalës së tij, Stafa vuri në shënjestër mënyrën se si, sipas tij, mazhoranca i ka etiketuar protestuesit, duke theksuar se në shesh janë të rinj që duan ta ndërtojnë jetën e tyre në Shqipëri, familje që synojnë të jetojnë këtu, pensionistë dhe qytetarë që kërkojnë më shumë mbështetje sociale.

Ai foli edhe për shqetësimet që lidhen me korrupsionin, gjendjen në spitale dhe vështirësitë ekonomike që prekin disa shtresa të shoqërisë, duke e përshkruar protestën si një zë për dinjitet dhe për një Shqipëri ndryshe.

“Përballë keni një kryeministër që ju quan sorra dhe korbat. Por kush janë? Janë rinia që kërkon të ardhmen ta ketë në Shqipëri? Janë të rinjtë që duan familjen e tyre ta krijojnë në Shqipëri? Kush janë sorrat dhe korbat? Kanë ata qytetarë që kërkojmë që korrupsionit t’i jepet fund. Janë pensionistët që kërkojnë të drejtën e tyre themelore, paratë për të blerë ilaçe. Janë ato nëna me fëmijë jetimë që nuk mbyllin dot muajin? Janë pacientët që shkojnë në spitale e nuk gjejnë ilaçe e pajisje. Jo mor jo këtu janë shqiponjat që luftojnë për dinjitet e një Shqipëri ndryshe. Janë Shqiponja që kërkojnë dinjitet për të ardhmen. A i keni parë çfarë shpenzimesh luksi, çfarë jete jetojnë ata. Qëndroni, rezistoni, luftoni për të ardhmen tuaj. Jeni shqiponjat më të bukura të atij flamuri që valëvitet dhe kërkon që të ardhmen ta kenë në Shqipëri. Ata nuk lodhen duke vjedhur, edhe ju si Shqiponja duhet të qëndroni në shesh deri në fund”, tha mes të tjerash ai.

Më tej, Stafa i nxiti të pranishmit të mbeten në protestë dhe të mos e ndërpresin angazhimin e tyre qytetar, duke i përshkruar ata si “shqiponja” që po luftojnë për të ardhmen e vendit.

Osman Stafa është një nga zërat më të njohur të gazetarisë shqiptare, i angazhuar prej vitesh në denoncimin e problematikave sociale, veçanërisht atyre që lidhen me sistemin publik shëndetësor. Së fundmi, ai është bërë edhe një nga figurat më të spikatura të protestës qytetare që prej 26 ditësh zhvillohet në Tiranë.

Pak javë më parë, gjatë një interviste në emisionin “S’e luan topi”, gazetari foli rrallë për jetën e tij private dhe partneren, Kristina Belba.

“Ajo pa te unë jo bukurinë, ndaj e vlerësoj”, u shpreh ai me humor dhe dashuri.

Në të njëjtën intervistë ishte vetë Kristina ajo që zbuloi se çifti planifikonte të shpallte fejesën në fund të muajit. Ndërsa Osman Stafa iu përgjigj me batutë:

“Derisa e thotë Kristina, është e vërtetë, por shpalljen e fejesës do ta bëj në protestë.”

Mesa duket, surpriza erdhi pak më ndryshe nga sa ishte paralajmëruar. Propozimi romantik tashmë është bërë realitet dhe Kristina ka thënë “Po”, duke shënuar nisjen e një kapitulli të ri për çiftin.

In a statement, the organization called on the authorities to conduct a swift, impartial and effective investigation to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.

“Journalists must be able to report on protests, document developments of public interest and take part in public debate without being exposed to intimidation, insults or physical confrontation,” the SafeJournalists statement said.

Stafa reported to Police Station No. 3 that he was insulted and suffered minor injuries from unknown individuals, who according to him attacked him and the group he was with, consisting of two foreign journalists and their interpreter.

The SafeJournalists Network in Albania expresses concern over the reported verbal attack and physical intimidation against journalist Osman Stafa, on the evening of June 21, 2026, in central Tirana, after the civic protest.

The network calls for a swift, impartial and effective investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident. Journalists must be able to report on protests, document developments of public interest and participate in public debate without being exposed to intimidation, insults or physical confrontation.

According to the police statement, the incident occurred at around 22:00 near Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, where police were notified of a conflict between several people. Stafa filed a complaint at Police Station No. 3, claiming that he was insulted and suffered minor injuries from unknown individuals who attacked him and the group consisting of two journalists and their interpreter, with whom he was present. Police also questioned the individuals suspected of the insults and the attack, who gave a different version of the event. Later, the authorities announced that investigative actions are continuing under the direction of the Prosecution.

Stafa told the SafeJournalists Network: “I was verbally attacked with serious insults because of my work as a journalist. During the protest march I was walking together with two foreign journalists and their interpreter. I was disturbed and felt unsafe. I did not know these people. I have filed a complaint with the police and will continue to pursue the case.”

In a tense civic and political environment, all actors must avoid language or behavior that could put journalists at risk or further undermine their safety.

The SafeJournalists Network will continue to monitor the case and expects a clear institutional response.

Any attack on journalists is an attack on media freedom and democratic values.
