A total of 160 compensation claims have been submitted by citizens and legal entities in Kumanovo following the severe weather that hit the region some time ago.

The claims mainly concern damage to the roofs and façades of buildings and to vehicles, as well as the consequences of flooding caused by rainwater.

The Damage Assessment Commission will review the claims and conduct on-site assessments. At the end of this process, it will prepare a report to be submitted to the relevant commission in the Government.

The Mayor of Kumanovo, Maksim Dimitrievski, said that the storm had caused not only material damage but had also affected road infrastructure and traffic signage.

According to Dimitrievski, work is under way in rural areas together with the “National Forests” public enterprise to resolve the problems that have arisen. He said that three traffic lights had been knocked down, while the most serious damage was the collapse of the main control box containing the controller for all the traffic lights on “Treta MUB” Boulevard. This fault has been repaired, while the problem at the intersection near the Green Market still remains to be resolved.

The municipality must secure the funds needed to purchase and install new traffic signage. Municipal institutions, as well as citizens and private entities, also suffered storm damage.

Aleksandar Kërstevski, director of the Home for the Elderly in Kumanovo, said that parts of the institution’s building had been damaged.

He said that several trees had been broken and uprooted, installations and windows had been damaged, while problems had also emerged on the building’s roof and in other areas. According to Kërstevski, the damage was repaired through donations.

Although more than a month has passed since the severe weather, work to repair the damage and clear away the storm’s effects is continuing in Kumanovo and the surrounding area.

Employees of the municipal enterprises and teams from the “National Forests” public enterprise are removing fallen and uprooted trees, while work is also under way to restore the electricity distribution network.

The results of checks conducted so far by the Public Health Center, the laboratory of the Kumanovo Filtration Station and the Institute of Public Health show that water from Kumanovo’s water supply system is safe to drink. This was announced by Toni Jonçevski, head of the Kumanovo Filtration Station.

According to him, water quality in Kumanovo is monitored at 11 measuring points, including the Filtration Station. In addition to regular checks, more extensive periodic analyses are also carried out every three months.

“Water in Kumanovo is tested at 11 measuring points, including the Filtration Station, while expanded periodic analyses are also conducted every three months. Based on the results obtained so far, water from Kumanovo’s water supply system is safe for use. Samples are also analyzed by the Public Health Center, our laboratory and the Institute of Public Health. All analyses so far show that the water is safe to drink,” Jovçevski said.

Jovçevski also explained the function of residual chlorine, which is added to the water after the purification process is completed. This chlorine serves as an additional safety measure within the supply network.

“Residual chlorine is the chlorine added to water after purification and is, in fact, the protector of drinking water. In other words, it provides protection against possible secondary contamination and destroys microorganisms that may be present in the water,” Jovçevski said.

As for water supply during the high summer temperatures, no major breakdowns or interruptions have been recorded so far. The reservoirs have been full this year, while “Water Economy” regularly provides additional quantities through the bypass. Supplies from “Mitev Most” and “Bedinje” are also being used.

“Considering that the reservoirs were full this year, ‘Water Economy’ regularly releases additional quantities of water through the bypass, while supplies from ‘Mitev Most’ and ‘Bedinje’ are also being used. So far, we have not observed any major interruption in the water supply,” Jovçevski said.

Despite the stable supply, in the evening and especially during periods when demand increases, the higher parts of Kumanovo may experience a drop in pressure. Jovçevski attributes this situation to irrational use in the lower parts of the city, where large quantities of water are drawn, consequently weakening pressure in the higher areas.

“Water Economy” calls on citizens to use water from the network carefully and rationally, especially during periods of increased consumption. This would help maintain stable pressure and ensure an uninterrupted supply for all users.
