The Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources has successfully concluded the first comprehensive National Hydrogen Study, marking a decisive step toward integration into the regional and European economy of this energy source. The drafting of the document was made possible thanks to technical assistance funded by the European Union under the IPA II program.

This project was developed through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) and the Infrastructure Project Facility 10 (IPF10), as part of the broader initiative for natural gas interconnection between Macedonia and Serbia. It constitutes the first state-level document that deeply addresses the potentials for the creation, distribution, storage, and consumption of green hydrogen, a key fuel for a clean energy future.

The analysis confirms that the country possesses concrete opportunities to gradually build a hydrogen market and to actively position itself in the future pan-European infrastructure. According to the report, Macedonia enjoys a strategic geographical position, along with Greece and Serbia, within the Pan-European Hydrogen Network and the European cross-border transport backbone known as the European Hydrogen Backbone.

A key aspect highlighted is that the new interconnector gas pipeline with Greece, currently under construction, was designed from the project phase to transport 100% hydrogen. Likewise, the tender documentation for selecting the contractors for the future interconnection with Serbia stipulates that this segment will also be fully compatible with the flow of pure hydrogen. In this way, both lines will become essential segments of the national backbone for this energy carrier and will promote regional integration with the European hydrogen market.

With the completion of this study, Macedonia joins the small group of states in the region that already have a strategic roadmap for the development of the hydrogen sector, which represents a significant advantage on the journey of energy transition and alignment with European Union directives.

According to the ministry, this decision creates a new opportunity for all households that have not yet applied to benefit from state aid. The support amounts to up to 30,000 denars, or up to 70 percent of the costs incurred for connecting to the natural gas network or for purchasing a gas boiler.

For the implementation of this measure, 3 million denars have been made available, while the distribution of the funds will be carried out on a “first come, first served” basis, until the fund is exhausted. According to the ministry, the extension of the deadline has a clear goal: to enable as many citizens as possible to make use of this measure, reduce heating costs and at the same time use a cleaner and more efficient energy source.

Eligible to apply are households that during 2026 will connect their homes to the natural gas distribution system, as well as households that will purchase a gas boiler for a property that had already been connected to the system by January 1, 2026. Each household has the right to submit only one application.

The Ministry called on all interested citizens to submit their applications on time, in accordance with the conditions of the public call. Additional information can be found on the Ministry’s official website – www.energy.gov.mk.

After the deadline expires, the submitted applications will be reviewed by a commission established by the Ministry, while financial support will be transferred to all beneficiaries who meet the established conditions. The ministry emphasized that support for citizens, increasing energy efficiency and creating better living conditions remain among the main priorities of the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources. Through such measures, according to the ministry, it continues to implement policies that bring direct benefits to families and help build a safer, cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
