The US military struck three oil tankers linked to Iran on Saturday after ballistic missiles were launched at two of its warships in the region.

US Central Command (Centcom) said Saturday that it had “permanently disabled” one bunker near Kharg Island and another near the Strait of Hormuz, and had “completely destroyed” a third in the Gulf of Oman.

Centcom said it had “successfully thwarted” multiple attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeting a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. No US personnel were injured, it said in a statement.

Iranian state media had earlier reported that one of its oil tankers had been hit by US missiles off the coast of Kharg Island.

“Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you fire on two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost—by destroying three of yours,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of Centcom.

The attacks come nearly a week after renewed strikes between the US and Iran, which followed a month of relative calm between the warring parties.

The US and Israel launched widespread attacks on Iran on February 28, with Iran responding by attacking Israel, US bases and allied states in the Persian Gulf, and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.

The United Arab Emirates, a key trading partner of Iran, is suspending all trade and financial transactions with the Islamic Republic until further notice.

“In light of the regional escalations undermining regional and international peace and security, all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran have been halted until further notice,” the Emirati Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Tuesday.

Media reports said the statement was issued after the United Arab Emirates said two ballistic missiles targeting maritime navigation had fallen into the sea, while Iran denied launching the missiles.

The UAE is one of Iran’s largest trading partners, ranking second only to China. Trade between the two countries had expanded even as the US continued to tighten sanctions on the regime.

Last week, vessels belonging to the United Arab Emirates’ state-owned oil company were targeted by Iran while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the Emirati state news agency said.

After the US and Israel launched a war against Iran in February, Tehran responded by firing missiles and drones at US allies in the region. The UAE was the most heavily attacked of all Washington’s allies, including Israel.

Iranian media report that a series of explosions has been recorded at the port of Bandar Abbas, in southern Iran, as well as in the maritime area around Qeshm Island. According to the same sources, 11 strikes were carried out.

According to CENTCOM statements, the operation was carried out in the early hours of Wednesday and came as an immediate response to attacks Iran carried out against three merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation comes as negotiations between the United States and Iran are still ongoing for a final agreement following the conflict of recent months.

Tensions in the Middle East have returned, as the US military carried out further strikes against Iranian targets on the orders of President Donald Trump.

US Central Command said the attack was a direct response to ongoing Iranian aggression.

“American military aircraft targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and mine deployment capabilities,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

The additional strikes come after an Iranian attack on Thursday against a commercial vessel near the Strait of Hormuz. The US then launched strikes against Iran around the Strait of Hormuz on Friday.

“Following yesterday’s US strikes in response to the Iranian attack on the M/V Ever Lovely, Iran was given a chance to honor the ceasefire agreement, but chose not to do so when its forces launched a one-way attack drone that struck the M/T Kiku this morning at 4:30 a.m. ET,” the CENTCOM statement said.

CNN writes that the wave of strikes complicates the initial US-Iran agreement signed this month, which was aimed at expanding the ceasefire and restoring traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump threatened more military action if Iranian attacks continue.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps objected, saying the US strikes violated the ceasefire, which would result in the complete suspension of all diplomatic processes.
