Albania is expected to halt meat imports from Brazil starting on September 3, 2026, following the European Union’s latest changes to the import conditions for products of animal origin.

The National Food Authority (AKU) has informed the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development about the new changes approved by the EU and has requested measures to ensure that procedures at border inspection posts continue after this date.

According to the AKU, the European Union has amended the list of third countries authorized to export certain animals and products of animal origin, as part of restrictions on the use of certain medicinal antimicrobial products.

As a result of these changes, Brazil has been removed from the list of countries or regions authorized to supply the European market with certain animal products intended for human consumption.

In its response to the AKU, the Ministry of Agriculture stated that the changes approved by the EU also directly affect the implementation of Albanian rules.

This is because the Albanian order makes meat imports from Brazil conditional on the European Union’s approval of the zones and establishments where these products are produced.

Under these circumstances, the Ministry of Agriculture has asked the AKU to notify importing companies that meat imports from Brazil will be halted in accordance with the new rules, which take effect on September 3, 2026.

The decision affects importers and market operators that source meat from Brazil, while procedures at border inspection posts will have to be carried out in accordance with the new changes after that date.
