Nine drivers were deprived of their liberty over the past 24 hours across the country, on suspicion of driving vehicles recklessly.

Four of them were caught driving under the influence of alcohol in Kumanovo, Skopje and Delchevo. Among them was a motorcyclist who tested at 2.37 per mille of alcohol in his blood.

Police also detained four people who were driving without a licence, including a minor from Gostivar. Meanwhile, in Vinica, a driver was detained for operating a vehicle despite an active driving ban.

Once the cases have been fully documented, criminal charges will be filed against those involved.

Tetovo police, through the Computer Crimes Department, arrested on September 7, 2026 a 48-year-old man with initials Z.G. from the village of Lower Sedllarca. He is suspected of using compromising material to extort money from a woman with whom he had had a prior relationship, by threatening to distribute her intimate photos.

According to police data, the criminal offenses fall under articles 24 and 152 of the Criminal Code.

That same day, a female resident of Tetovo filed a report alleging that Z.G. and another person had distributed private recordings with explicit sexual content on various platforms without permission. The footage came from the period of their previous relationship.

During court-authorized searches at his home, law enforcement found and confiscated as evidence a mobile phone and a laptop.

Investigations so far indicate that over the past two years, Z.G. had repeatedly demanded sums of money from the victim in order to not make the videos and photographs public. The 48-year-old is currently detained at the police station, and after the complete investigation, relevant criminal charges will be filed against him.

A 60-year-old inmate has been found dead in Idrizovo prison, the Interior Ministry announced.

According to the statement, on September 6, 2026, at 5:00 a.m., the Idrizovo Correctional Facility informed the Skopje Police Department that D.M. (60), from the Negotino area, who was serving a sentence at the prison, had been found inside the facility with no signs of life.

His death was confirmed by an emergency medical services doctor, while no visible signs of violence were found on his body. By order of the public prosecutor, the deceased’s body was sent for an autopsy.

A 50-year-old man from Negotino has died following a fatal crash on the Kriva Palanka-Kumanovo road. The victim, identified by the initials M.N., was riding a motorcycle with Negotino license plates when he lost control and crashed into the roadside barriers.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, at around 1:00 p.m., near the village of Gradec. Police in Kriva Palanka were immediately notified and went to the scene of the accident.

A motorcycle carrying two people stopped in front of the group. Shortly afterward, one of them opened fire on the five residents, while both perpetrators immediately fled the scene.

One of the bullets struck 26-year-old A.M. He was transported by ambulance to the “Mother Teresa” Clinical Complex, but he did not survive his injuries and died in hospital.

Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the two attackers, while the motives for the incident also remain unclear.

About 1.1 million euros were seized yesterday from a legal entity and two individuals from Strumica, in an operation carried out by the police together with competent state institutions.

Of the total amount, 597,500 euros were found in cash, while the rest was deposited in transaction accounts. The information was released today at a joint press conference by the director of the Bureau for Public Security (BJB), Aleksandar Janev, as well as representatives of SPB Strumica, the Public Revenue Office, the Financial Police and the Public Prosecution.

Janev said that the investigation into illegally acquired financial assets began in April of this year. The person in whose possession the money was found had no relevant financial documentation to prove its origin.

During the investigation, another lead was uncovered. The authorities determined that in 2018, individuals and legal entities had deposited an additional 500,000 euros into the bank account of an individual.

The financial analysis and investigation revealed a significant discrepancy between the annual income declared as savings and the amount of money deposited. According to Janev, the necessary documentation was missing to justify both the origin and the use of these funds by the entire family.

The investigation also identified a tax liability of about 2 million denars that had not been paid into the budget. Janev assessed that inter-institutional coordination made it possible to solve the case, calling it the opening of a new chapter in confronting illegally acquired financial assets.

He stated that whenever money becomes the subject of an investigation, the authorities will seek answers about its source and origin. According to him, honest Macedonian citizens who respect the law have no reason to worry, while people who cannot prove the origin of their financial assets or the legal basis of their acquired wealth should be afraid.

The BJB director announced that SPB Strumica has filed a criminal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Strumica against two individuals and one legal entity, on suspicion of tax evasion, usury and money laundering. No further details were provided, as the procedure, it was explained, remains in the pre-investigation phase.

Police have arrested a 45-year-old man from Skopje who is suspected of stealing metal parts from railway infrastructure on two occasions in the Aerodrom and Drachevo areas.

Z.S. was detained on September 3 by officers from the Skopje Police Department following reports of two aggravated thefts committed along the railway line.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on September 3, 2026, Skopje police took action following the report and detained the suspect in the territory covered by the Aerodrom Police Station. The stolen items were recovered and returned to their owner, “Railways of RNM.”

The investigation into the case is ongoing, and once the incident has been fully documented, an appropriate criminal complaint is expected to be filed against the 45-year-old.

During a special operation to monitor pedestrian behavior in traffic, 189 violations were recorded across North Macedonia, the Ministry of Interior said.

The operation was conducted on September 2 by the Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Affairs Department and lasted from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The highest number of violations was recorded in the area covered by the Štip Sector for Internal Affairs, with a total of 57 cases. The Bitola and Strumica sectors each recorded 32 violations, while 27 were identified in the Tetovo sector.

Of the 189 cases recorded, 159 involved unsafe road crossings. These included crossing outside marked pedestrian crossings and using areas not designated for this purpose.

The Ministry of Interior said appropriate measures were taken for each violation in accordance with the legal provisions in force.

The ministry announced that stepped-up traffic checks will continue, with the aim of improving the safety of all road users.

At the same time, pedestrians are urged to obey traffic rules and cross the road only at marked pedestrian crossings or other designated safe crossing points.

Following an operation against a group suspected of embezzlement, money laundering and negligent performance of official duties, police filed criminal charges against six individuals and three legal entities. The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that the unlawful proceeds exceeded 138 million denars, equivalent to approximately €2.26 million.

The operation was conducted on September 2 and 3 by the Department for the Suppression of Organized and Serious Crime, in coordination with the Rapid Response Unit. It was overseen by the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption.

S.S., S.S. and Z.G. were arrested during the operation. Searches carried out at several locations led to the seizure of approximately €27,735, 38,500 denars, 750 Swiss francs and US$100. Several mobile phones and two passenger vehicles were also seized.

The criminal complaint states that S.S., in his capacity as the manager of a legal entity based in Kučevište and authorized to conduct vehicle inspections, compiled and submitted falsified reports on fees collected through vehicle registrations. These actions are suspected to have taken place from January 2021 to January 2026 and, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, enabled the embezzlement of 138,877,419 denars, or approximately €2.26 million.

The investigation also implicated other individuals in the suspected scheme. They include an employee at the vehicle inspection station, two executive members of the board of directors of an insurance brokerage company, and a certified accountant.

According to the investigation, the funds were transferred between the accounts of several legal entities and subsequently mixed with revenue generated through regular business activities. Some of the money is suspected to have been used to purchase real estate.

The case also involves T.M., assistant director of finance at the Public Enterprise for State Roads. Police suspect that he failed to carry out the necessary oversight when verifying the submitted reports and collecting fees. This allegedly enabled the suspects to obtain 48,434,406 denars in unlawful proceeds from road tax.

According to police, the actions caused financial losses to several institutions. The Public Enterprise for State Roads suffered losses of 48.4 million denars, the Red Cross 1.48 million denars, the Ministry of Environment 5.58 million denars, and the state budget and municipalities 83.37 million denars.

Criminal proceedings against the suspects will continue before the competent prosecutor’s office and court.

Police reported a serious case of violence last night in which a man allegedly tied his wife to a tree in a wooded area and struck her with a hard object.

The Interior Ministry announced that police in Skopje arrested 27-year-old L.F.D. from Skopje yesterday at 20:40. The arrest followed an earlier complaint filed by his 21-year-old wife, who said he had physically assaulted her in the family home. According to the report, he then took her to a wooded area in the Skopje region, where he tied her to a tree and assaulted her with a hard object.

Further legal action is expected to be taken in connection with the case.
