Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti met directly with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, for the first time during the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting took place on September 22, while the Prime Minister’s Office informed the public about it on October 2.

Kurti said that during the conversation he had thanked President Trump for increasing defense investment within NATO. He stressed that Kosovo also aims to become part of the alliance and reiterated that the United States remains Kosovo’s “main ally, irreplaceable partner and special friend.”

Publicist Fadil Lepaja considers the meeting an important diplomatic development for Kosovo because, in his view, it creates opportunities to promote the country’s interests on the international stage.

“Every meeting between a Kosovo official and the president of the United States represents an important diplomatic step and a major opportunity to promote and lobby for the country’s interests, particularly its membership in international organizations, with a focus on NATO and the UN, but also in the new configurations emerging amid efforts to establish a new international order,” Lepaja says.

According to the publicist, the meeting should be viewed within the framework of the stable relations between Kosovo and the United States, which, in his assessment, continue despite political changes in both countries.

“Prime Minister Kurti’s meeting is undoubtedly also a success for his government. It conveys the message that, at the geopolitical level, neither Kosovo nor the United States has any doubts: we have relied on the United States and have consistently received strong support from it,” he says.

Lepaja emphasizes that relations between Kosovo and the United States are determined not only by the governments or politicians in power, but have a broader dimension.

“Regardless of who leads the United States and Kosovo, this friendship between a superpower and a small but dignified country in the Western alliance remains strong and unwavering, at a time when our northern neighbors are facing deep geopolitical dilemmas and divisions,” the publicist states.

In his analysis, Lepaja also links the Kurti–Trump meeting to Kosovo’s domestic political clashes, particularly the repeated accusations over the years that Albin Kurti and the Vetëvendosje Movement have held anti-American positions.

“The meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Kurti is also important for the political alignments in the country. An anti-government bloc had based its political platform on the ‘anti-Americanism’ of Prime Minister Kurti and Vetëvendosje, a claim that hardly had any basis and was mainly supported by statements from a former senior official in President Trump’s previous administration, whose role changed under the current administration,” he says.

Referring to former US envoy Richard Grenell, Lepaja assesses that the meeting held in New York calls into question the political influence of previous statements portraying Kurti as problematic in his relations with Washington.

“This meeting, together with its duration, in a way devalues all the statements made by former US official Grenell and his associates in Albanian and Kosovar parties and media,” Lepaja says.

The publicist considers this development important even if Kosovo moves toward a new electoral process, as it could influence how relations between Kosovo and the United States are handled politically.

“If the country goes to the polls again, this meeting undoubtedly disarms Grenell’s mouthpieces among us, but it could also discourage the Grenellists in the LDK from opposing the agreement on the president,” Lepaja says.

Kryeministri i Kosovës, Albin Kurti, u takua për herë të parë drejtpërdrejt me presidentin e Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës, Donald Trump, gjatë Javës së Nivelit të Lartë të Asamblesë së Përgjithshme të OKB-së në Nju Jork. Takimi u mbajt më 22 shtator, ndërsa Zyra e Kryeministrit e njoftoi publikun për të më 2 tetor.

Kurti deklaroi se gjatë bisedës e kishte falënderuar presidentin Trump për rritjen e investimeve në mbrojtje brenda NATO-s. Ai theksoi se edhe Kosova synon të bëhet pjesë e kësaj aleance dhe ritheksoi se Shtetet e Bashkuara mbeten “aleati kryesor, partneri i pazëvendësueshëm dhe miku special” i Kosovës.

Publicisti Fadil Lepaja e konsideron takimin një zhvillim të rëndësishëm diplomatik për Kosovën, pasi, sipas tij, ai krijon mundësi për promovimin e interesave të vendit në skenën ndërkombëtare.

As the verdict in the case against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army is expected on September 16 in The Hague, warnings have intensified in Kosovo about the consequences a guilty verdict could bring. The U.S. Embassy in Pristina has also issued a security alert for American citizens, referring to the large protests announced in Pristina and other cities across Kosovo.

The embassy said the protests could involve large crowds, road blockages and significant difficulties with traffic. For this reason, citizens have been advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are expected to take place.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and war veterans have warned of serious developments in the event of an unfavorable verdict. MP Ganimete Musliu spoke of “extremely serious chain reactions” that could affect Kosovo and international actors. MP Mërgim Lushtaku said that all legal means would be used, but also mentioned the possibility of allowing citizens to arm themselves, linking this to the potential threat from Serbia.

Nasim Haradinaj, the former deputy head of the Organization of Kosovo Liberation Army War Veterans, had also warned weeks ago of an escalation of the situation. In the event of a conviction, he said, “flames will engulf” not only Kosovo but also other parts of the region.

Publicist Fadil Lepaja has called on citizens not to fall into what he considers Serbia’s trap. According to him, Belgrade aims to revive the scenario of 2004 and turn Kosovo’s society against the West.

“I am convinced that the citizens of Kosovo will not fall into the trap set by Serbia by rebelling and burning Kosovo in the name of defending the KLA. The KLA can be defended only by defending Kosovo. Serbia can no longer deceive anyone with its attempt to repeat 2004, when it managed to portray war criminals as victims. Its aim is to turn the citizens of Kosovo against the West and the European Union, and the West against Kosovo,” Lepaja told Bota sot.

He added that encouraging violent protests could be used to set the protesters against the majority of Kosovo’s citizens. For this reason, he said, every protest should be dignified and demonstrate faith in the West and in justice.

Lepaja stressed that, regardless of the outcome of the proceedings, dissatisfaction must not be directed against the country. “We hope and believe that the Court’s verdict will be acquitting, in which case we will all celebrate together, both those who voted for and those who did not vote for the Special Court. However, even if the decision is not the one we want, our anger will not turn against Kosovo,” the publicist said.

In conclusion, he said that citizens must safeguard the country’s Euro-Atlantic course. “We will neither burn nor destabilize Kosovo. On the contrary, we will oppose every attempt by Serbia to return to Kosovo or tarnish our just war for freedom. The liberators fought so that this people could live in freedom and democracy, have a secure Euro-Atlantic path and choose their own government, while respecting differing opinions and minorities. This is our pledge, our legacy and our unstoppable path,” Lepaja concluded.

The Specialist Court, based in The Hague, was established as part of a special legal mechanism to examine allegations of crimes committed during and after the war in Kosovo. In 2015, Kosovo’s Assembly approved the constitutional amendments and legal framework that enabled the creation of the Specialist Chambers. They operate under Kosovo’s laws, while their seat is in The Hague.

The work of this court has been accompanied by strong political and social clashes in Kosovo. Its supporters see it as a mechanism for addressing individual allegations of crimes, while its opponents have expressed concerns about the way the KLA is being treated and the impact of the proceedings on the international perception of Kosovo’s war.

Ndërsa më 16 shtator pritet vendimi ndaj ish-krerëve të Ushtrisë Çlirimtare të Kosovës në Hagë, në Kosovë janë shtuar paralajmërimet për pasojat që mund të sjellë një aktgjykim dënues. Edhe Ambasada e SHBA-së në Prishtinë ka publikuar një njoftim sigurie për qytetarët amerikanë, duke iu referuar protestave të mëdha të paralajmëruara në Prishtinë dhe në qytete të tjera të Kosovës.

Ambasada ka bërë të ditur se protestat mund të shoqërohen me turma të mëdha, bllokim rrugësh dhe vështirësi të konsiderueshme në qarkullim. Për këtë arsye, qytetarëve u është rekomanduar të shmangin zonat ku pritet të zhvillohen demonstratat.

Ndërkohë, përfaqësues të PDK-së dhe të veteranëve të luftës kanë paralajmëruar zhvillime të rënda në rast të një vendimi të pafavorshëm. Deputetja Ganimete Musliu ka folur për “pasoja jashtëzakonisht të mëdha zinxhirore” që mund të prekin Kosovën dhe faktorët ndërkombëtarë. Deputeti Mërgim Lushtaku ka deklaruar se do të përdoren të gjitha mjetet juridike, por ka përmendur edhe mundësinë e lejimit të armatosjes së qytetarëve, duke e lidhur këtë me rrezikun e mundshëm nga Serbia.

Edhe ish-nënkryetari i OVL-UÇK-së, Nasim Haradinaj, kishte paralajmëruar javë më parë për përshkallëzim të situatës. Në rast të një dënimi, ai kishte thënë se “do të digjet flakë” jo vetëm Kosova, por edhe pjesë të tjera të rajonit.

Publicisti Fadil Lepaja u ka bërë thirrje qytetarëve që të mos bien në atë që e konsideron kurth të Serbisë. Sipas tij, Beogradi synon të rikthejë skenarin e vitit 2004 dhe ta drejtojë shoqërinë kosovare kundër Perëndimit.

UÇK-ja mund të mbrohet vetëm duke mbrojtur Kosovën. Serbia nuk mund ta mashtrojë më askënd me përpjekjen për ta përsëritur vitin 2004, kur arriti t’i paraqiste kriminelët e luftës si viktima. Synimi i saj është t’i kthejë qytetarët e Kosovës kundër Perëndimit dhe Bashkimit Evropian, ndërsa Perëndimin kundër Kosovës”, ka deklaruar Lepaja për “Bota sot”.

Ai ka shtuar se nxitja e protestave të dhunshme do të mund të përdorej për t’i vënë protestuesit përballë shumicës së qytetarëve të Kosovës. Për këtë arsye, sipas tij, çdo protestë duhet të jetë dinjitoze dhe të dëshmojë besimin në Perëndim dhe në drejtësi.

Lepaja ka theksuar se, pavarësisht rezultatit të procesit, pakënaqësia nuk duhet të drejtohet kundër vendit. “Ne shpresojmë dhe besojmë se verdikti i Gjykatës do të jetë shfajësues, rast në të cilin të gjithë do të festojmë së bashku, si ata që e votuan, ashtu edhe ata që nuk e votuan Gjykatën Speciale. Megjithatë, edhe nëse vendimi nuk është ai që dëshirojmë, zemërimi ynë nuk do të kthehet kundër Kosovës”, është shprehur publicisti.

Në përmbyllje, ai ka thënë se qytetarët duhet të ruajnë të sigurt drejtimin euroatlantik të vendit. “Ne nuk do ta djegim dhe as do ta destabilizojmë Kosovën. Përkundrazi, do ta kundërshtojmë çdo përpjekje të Serbisë për t’u kthyer në Kosovë apo për ta njollosur luftën tonë të drejtë për liri. Çlirimtarët luftuan që ky popull të jetojë në liri e demokraci, të ketë të sigurt rrugën euroatlantike dhe të zgjedhë vetë qeverisjen, duke respektuar mendimet e ndryshme dhe pakicat. Ky është zotimi, trashëgimia dhe rruga jonë e pandalshme”, ka përfunduar Lepaja.

Gjykata Speciale, e vendosur në Hagë, u themelua si pjesë e një mekanizmi të veçantë juridik për shqyrtimin e pretendimeve për krime të kryera gjatë dhe pas luftës në Kosovë. Në vitin 2015, Kuvendi i Kosovës miratoi ndryshimet kushtetuese dhe bazën ligjore që mundësuan krijimin e Dhomave të Specializuara. Ato funksionojnë në bazë të ligjeve të Kosovës, ndërsa selinë e kanë në Hagë.

Veprimtaria e kësaj gjykate është shoqëruar me përplasje të forta politike dhe shoqërore në Kosovë. Përkrahësit e saj e shohin si një mekanizëm për trajtimin e pretendimeve individuale për krime, ndërsa kundërshtarët kanë shprehur shqetësime për mënyrën se si trajtohet UÇK-ja dhe për ndikimin e proceseve në perceptimin ndërkombëtar të luftës së Kosovës.
