Following his meeting with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Democratic League of Kosovo leader Lumir Abdixhiku said that the LDK would participate in institutional representation and contribute to resolving the constitutional crisis, as well as to forming the institutions.

According to Abdixhiku, the discussion focused on the criteria and qualities that the next president of the Republic of Kosovo should possess. He said the parties had reached an agreement in principle on the profile of the future head of state.

The LDK leader stressed that the aim was not to elect a partisan president, but rather a respected figure who embodies political unity and carries out the country’s highest office with dignity.

Abdixhiku said the person who takes up the post should have a pro-Western orientation, love and defend the Republic, uphold democracy properly, and represent political unity in accordance with the requirements of Kosovo’s Constitution.

He expressed confidence that Kosovo has figures who meet these criteria. However, describing this as a highly sensitive issue, Abdixhiku said time had been requested for internal discussions within the respective political parties and for consultations with society, each in their own way, before specific names are put forward at future meetings.

According to him, the Democratic League of Kosovo remains focused on this framework. The possibility of reaching an agreement on the president remains open, and there is still time to address it.

Abdixhiku emphasized that the discussions concern only the issue of the president and that the LDK is not asking for anything in return. He said the sole aim was to ensure institutional stability so that Kosovo could enjoy the necessary and possible degree of calm.

Lumir Abdixhiku, leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), said there was no reason to delay the process of constituting the Kosovo Assembly.

Shortly before meeting with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, he said attention should be focused on fulfilling constitutional obligations.

“We will continue with the work we need to do to constitute the Assembly. There is no reason to delay the constitution of the Assembly. Now, please allow me to go to the meeting, and I will make a statement afterward,” Abdixhiku said.

When journalists asked what the LDK’s request entailed, he gave a brief response, saying it concerned “…the constitution of the Assembly.”

Regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement during the day or convening the constitutive session, the LDK leader insisted that it should not be delayed.

“There must be a constitutive session. There must be a constitutive session. There is no need to delay the constitution of the Assembly. The speaker and the Assembly Presidency must be elected. The LDK has neither requested nor is it requesting such delays,” he said, EO reports.

According to Abdixhiku, part of the responsibility for moving this process forward also rests with the largest party. He suggested that possible delays should not be used as a negotiating tactic.

“But now, this is also the responsibility of the largest party, which happens to have the oldest member at the session, seated in the Assembly chairperson’s seat. But if this has been done as a negotiating tactic, let us be very clear: the LDK will not submit, and the Republic will not surrender. Therefore, we will neither submit nor surrender,” he said.

Abdixhiku announced that he would address media representatives again after the meeting concluded.

“I am now going to the meeting, and during the meeting we will do our best to represent the interests of Kosovo, the people of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo. After the meeting, we will also speak to the media at the Kosovo Assembly,” Abdixhiku said.

Before the start of the constitutive session, LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku said that talks with the Vetëvendosje Movement had brought the parties closer on many issues, but that they continued to differ on the main issue: democratic balance.

According to him, establishing this balance would benefit Kosovo. Abdixhiku stressed that the LDK’s participation in these meetings is aimed at preventing new elections.

He explained that during the discussions, they are trying to defend their positions, which are not the same as those of the other side, and that this requires time. At the same time, he said, the goal is to unite all those represented by the LDK, including its members of parliament, around a common solution. Abdixhiku said these three processes are difficult and that, as long as the efforts and meetings continue, they remain the only ones seeking to avoid new elections.

The LDK leader said critics do not understand the reason and purpose behind these meetings. According to him, it appears that they are being asked to take the country to elections again, while such a scenario would cause the greatest harm to Kosovo and demonstrate the complete failure of the political class.

Abdixhiku said the meetings would continue. If the parties fail to reach an agreement, he said they will speak publicly and acknowledge it.

He stressed that the Assembly must be constituted today and that there is no reason for this not to happen. After this step, he said, around 25 days will be available to form the government. Abdixhiku said it would be better to reach an agreement on all institutions earlier, but if that does not happen, the parties must be transparent and honest, acknowledging that this is as far as they were able to go and that they cannot do more.

Asked whether the post of President should go to the LDK, Abdixhiku explained that the discussion was not about specific names, but about creating a balance in the distribution of power.

He said the LDK presents its positions during the meetings and that its demand for democratic balance means the party should have its own representation. At this stage, according to Abdixhiku, the discussions are not about specific individuals, but about a balanced democratic distribution of power.

According to him, it is beneficial for Kosovo for the parties to be represented and for the election result to be respected in its entirety. Abdixhiku stressed that the LDK does not seek to obtain anything to which it is not entitled, but at the same time, no one else should be allowed to gain something to which they are not entitled. He described democratic balance as the key issue in the ongoing meetings.
