Fourteen (14) new hybrid vehicles have been made available to neighborhood police officers by the Kosovo Police, with the aim of improving their efficiency in the field and strengthening cooperation with the community.

In a notice published in Pristina on August 10, 2026, it was announced that the management of the Kosovo Police is continuously working to bring neighborhood police officers closer to citizens and their needs.

Providing them with official vehicles is expected to make it easier and faster to achieve the objectives of the Intelligence-Led Policing and Community Policing Strategy, as well as to strengthen proactive responses to citizens’ requests.

The support was provided to the Community Policing and Prevention Division, specifically to the sectors where neighborhood police officers are engaged. New hybrid vehicles have been allocated to cover sectoral areas in all regional directorates, while one vehicle has been designated for the Directorate of Cultural Heritage.

The Kosovo Police stated that it would continue its efforts to deepen communication and cooperation with citizens, alongside further increasing institutional transparency and trust.

After 27 years, the Kosovo Police has begun assuming responsibility for security at the main bridge over the Ibar River in Mitrovica.

Television sources report that, starting today, Kosovo’s institutions have begun securing the bridge, which for a long period had been under the care of international security missions.

The transfer of this responsibility marks another stage in the process of transferring security duties to Kosovo’s institutions.

For years, the bridge over the Ibar River has been one of the most sensitive security points in Mitrovica, as well as a symbol of the city’s division.

An investigation conducted by Kosovo authorities for around two years began with the detention of two people suspected of war crimes and continued with excavations in Zubin Potok, where a mass grave was believed to be located. Within days, human remains were found at the site, another person suspected of war crimes was arrested, and a second location where human remains may be present was identified. Meanwhile, in Serbia, a Kosovo citizen suspected of espionage was arrested.

Excavations in Kalludër e Vogël, a mountainous village in the northern municipality of Zubin Potok, began on July 28 following suspicions that a mass grave existed there.

According to the authorities, the operation in the area was the result of a roughly two-year investigation by Kosovo’s Special Prosecution Office.

A few days before the work began, two people suspected of war crimes against the civilian population were arrested. The prosecution said their case was linked to the excavations carried out in Kalludër e Vogël.

Details about the acts of which the detainees are suspected have not been made public. However, the police said they had secured evidence that one of them was “mobilized and an active member during the war period in the former Yugoslav army.”

M.J. and M.B. are currently in pretrial detention.

On August 2, the Kosovo Police also arrested J.R. as part of the same investigation.

The Special Prosecution Office explained that his detention followed further investigative actions, but provided no information about the role he is suspected of having played.

Dejan Vasiq, M.B.’s lawyer, told Radio Free Europe that in the request for his client’s detention, he was accused of being among the people who buried the victims linked to the events in question.

“He is convinced that he has no connection to this event, because he was not at all at the location mentioned by the prosecution,” Vasiq said.

Millosh Deleviq, M.J.’s defense lawyer, declined to provide details about the specific suspicions against his client. He said only that the criminal offense had been classified as a war crime against the civilian population.

As the search continued, the authorities confirmed that the remains discovered in Kalludër e Vogël were of human origin.

From the first days of the excavations, suspicions arose that they could belong to a group of Albanians who were forcibly disappeared during the last war. Excavations at the site are continuing.

The civilian group, known as the “group of intellectuals,” has been missing since April 19, 1999. It included doctors, professors, lawyers and people in other professions.

On July 29, Kosovo’s acting prime minister, Albin Kurti, told reporters that the initial suspicion was that the remains could belong to this group.

“We cannot confirm that they are them, but that was our immediate suspicion. Nevertheless, we must wait for our authorities to tell us what this is about,” Kurti said.

The Institute of Forensic Medicine is handling the identification process. The authorities have stressed that only forensic examinations and DNA analyses can determine the identities of the victims.

The Special Prosecution Office has called on the media, citizens and officials to avoid any speculation regarding the identity of the remains.

“…Everything is still at an early stage, and public statements could harm the investigation process and, naturally, could also divert the final result,” the prosecution said in a statement.

On August 2, the prosecution and police announced that another location had been found in the village of Jabukë in Zubin Potok, where human remains are suspected to be present.

The institutions said they would apply to the Basic Court in Pristina for the necessary authorization to conduct excavations in this area as well.

One day before the announcement about the second location, Kurti visited the site where searches were being conducted in Kalludër e Vogël.

According to him, the fieldwork could continue for “many weeks, perhaps even many months,” as the human remains were found scattered along a stream.

Kurti also repeated his call for Serbia to open its state and military archives, arguing that they could help shed light on the fate of missing persons.

Following the announcement about the second location, acting President Albulena Haxhiu also reacted, describing it as “a grim reminder of the crimes committed during the war.”

While investigations into the suspected mass grave continued in Zubin Potok, Serbian authorities arrested a Kosovo citizen on suspicion of “espionage.”

Serbia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said that R.T., from Istog, was arrested on July 30 in Kraljevo. The High Court in that city ordered 30 days of detention for him.

Serbian authorities did not publish information about the actions attributed to R.T., apart from the fact that he is suspected of the criminal offense of espionage.

However, several sources in Kosovo told Radio Free Europe that the arrest could be linked to suspicions that R.T. had provided information that led to the location where excavations for human remains were being conducted in Zubin Potok.

Andin Hoti, Kosovo’s acting minister of Labor, Family, Social Welfare and the Values of the Liberation War, described the arrest of the person who, according to him, had helped uncover a suspected mass grave in Kosovo as “an attempted murder of the truth.”

“This is not a state seeking justice. This is a state apparatus that continues to protect criminals, intimidate witnesses and obstruct efforts to shed light on the fate of missing persons. Every such arrest sends a clear message: anyone who speaks about mass graves is punished,” Hoti wrote on Facebook.

Hoti has not explained what information supports his claim that the arrest was linked to the alleged assistance in uncovering the mass grave. He was not available for further comment.

According to official data, 1,579 people continue to be registered as missing from the 1998-99 war.

Kosovo Police have challenged statements published by the Raška-Prizren Eparchy, describing them as unfounded and inconsistent with the reality of the institution’s work.

In its response to the public, the police said they do not implement policies of pressure, intimidation or discrimination against the Serb community and the Serbian Orthodox Church.

“Such claims are not supported by facts, do not reflect the reality of Kosovo Police activities, and create a false perception of the institution’s mandate, composition and manner of operation,” the Kosovo Police said in their response.

According to the police, the institution is constitutional and professional, based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. Its ranks include members of all communities living in Kosovo, including the Serb community.

The police stressed that their actions are carried out exclusively in accordance with the law and on the basis of individual responsibility. They said the institution’s multi-ethnic character, civilian oversight and cooperation with international partners rule out the possibility of actions motivated by ethnicity, religion or politics.

Protection of the Serbian Orthodox Church and religious ceremonies

For more than a decade, Kosovo Police say they have secured hundreds of religious ceremonies, pilgrimages and activities of the Serbian Orthodox Church throughout Kosovo.

Kosovo Police said that special operational plans are prepared every year, in coordination with representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church, KFOR and other relevant institutions.

Regarding the June 28, 2026 ceremony in Gazimestan, the police stressed that the event was held without intervention or obstruction on their part.

“Police actions undertaken after the conclusion of the ceremony were not directed against worshippers, Serbian identity or religious rites. Police measures were taken only against individuals for whom there were reasonable suspicions of conduct containing elements of incitement to hatred, provocation or disruption of public order,” the statement said.

The police also clarified that decisions to impose fines, deport individuals or ban entry were not made by them, but by the competent administrative and judicial bodies, based on evidence in each case.

24 Serbian religious sites guarded around the clock by Kosovo Police

According to the police, safeguarding cultural and religious heritage is one of their main duties.

After responsibilities were transferred from KFOR, Kosovo Police took over the protection of cultural and religious heritage sites and established the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites (DSOTK).

Police data show that DSOTK includes members from all communities. More than 16 percent belong to the Serb community, while the directorate is headed by a major from that community.

During this period, 24 Serbian cultural and religious heritage sites have been guarded continuously, 24 hours a day, by Kosovo Police officers.

Statistics of cases at religious sites

Kosovo Police also presented statistical data on cases registered at cultural and religious heritage sites.

In 2024, 53 cases were recorded. Of these, 34 cases, or 64 percent, were reported at Muslim sites; 16 cases, or 30 percent, at Orthodox sites; and 3 cases, or 6 percent, at Catholic sites.

During 2025, 35 cases were registered, with 22 cases, or 63 percent, at Muslim sites, 10 cases, or 29 percent, at Orthodox sites, and 3 cases, or 8 percent, at Catholic sites.

For the January-June 2026 period, the police recorded 34 cases: 27 cases, or 79 percent, at Muslim sites; 5 cases, or 15 percent, at Orthodox sites; and 2 cases, or 6 percent, at Catholic sites.

According to the police, most of these cases are linked to property-related motives, including thefts and aggravated thefts.

Cases with inter-ethnic motives declining

Kosovo Police said they handle cases that may have inter-ethnic motives professionally and impartially, adding that their number has declined year after year.

According to the published figures, 31 such cases were registered in 2023, 25 cases were recorded in 2024, and only 5 cases in 2025.

On June 30, 2026, the Kosovo Police, with authorization from the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo, carried out an operation in Pristina during which assets worth 1 million euros were seized.

Eurojust also reacted to the operation, announcing that French and Italian authorities were involved.

“French and Italian authorities have continued their cooperation as part of an investigation into an international money laundering network that used gold bars to legitimize profits from drug trafficking. Following an initial operation, during which 30 million euros were seized, criminal assets worth 1 million euros were confiscated in a new action, under the coordination of Eurojust and Europol, in cooperation with the authorities of Kosovo,” the opening part of the statement says.

The notice goes on to stress that during a 10-month investigation, the authorities concluded that at least 18 million euros had been laundered through this scheme.

It is also stated that Eurojust and Europol have supported the investigation since its launch in December 2024, playing a key role in identifying, tracing and seizing criminal assets spread across different countries.
