Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti, during his visit to the United States, met with compatriots, investors, and American political representatives.

During an evening event held in Westchester, concrete opportunities for American investments in Kosovo were discussed, as well as the role the diaspora can play in facilitating these investments.

Kurti said that the support of the diaspora in the United States and of compatriots around the world has been crucial over the years for citizens’ well-being, Kosovo’s victory in the war for freedom, and state-building efforts.

According to him, the Republic of Kosovo, as an independent, sovereign, democratic, and sustainably developing state, now offers great investment opportunities. He stressed that compatriots are no longer forced to contribute only through sacrifice, as they can now invest and benefit.

The meeting was organized by Data4X and Ed and Barbara Hammel at the residence of Richard Lukaj in Westchester. Among the attendees were compatriots, investors, and American politicians, including former Hartford mayor Luke Bronin.

During this gathering, concrete ways to increase American investments in Kosovo and the facilitating role of the diaspora in this process were discussed. Kurti emphasized that the Republic of Kosovo is a partner investors can rely on and find support from.

Bern hosted political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Kosovo and Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting was led by Ilir Muçaj, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, and Pierre-Yves Fux, Assistant Secretary of State at Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Kosovo delegation comprised Mentor Latifi, Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Switzerland; Valdrin Grainca, Acting Head of the Division for Europe and the European Union; Ms. Fatmire Musliu, Senior Official; and Gjenis Haxhimehmeti, Second Secretary.

The talks focused on the good relations between Kosovo and Switzerland, as well as ways to expand political, economic and institutional cooperation. The discussions included the continuation of political dialogue, reciprocal high-level visits and cooperation in sectors of interest to both sides.

Ilir Muçaj praised Switzerland’s unwavering support for Kosovo’s development and the consolidation of its international position. He also expressed gratitude for Switzerland’s role in maintaining security through its participation in KFOR.

A special part of the meeting was devoted to economic issues, including increasing Swiss investment in Kosovo, boosting trade and strengthening ties between the business communities. The parties emphasized the importance of the Free Trade Agreement between Kosovo and the EFTA member states, including Switzerland, entering into force on 1 October 2026. According to the discussions, the agreement represents an important opportunity for the further development of economic relations. Development cooperation and projects supporting Kosovo’s economic and institutional development were also addressed.

The representatives also discussed the Kosovo diaspora in Switzerland, its contribution to both countries and its impact on strengthening social, economic and cultural relations between them.

During the consultations, views were also exchanged on the situation in the Western Balkans, regional security and Kosovo’s European perspective. In the context of multilateral issues, attention was given to Kosovo’s membership in international organizations, including the Council of Europe, as well as the possibility of further coordination with Switzerland.

The Kosovo delegation confirmed its readiness to continue the periodic consultations and follow up on the issues discussed, with the aim of further strengthening bilateral relations.

Low public spending on healthcare in Albania affects not only the quality of services, but also citizens’ life expectancy and the country’s economic development.

This is the conclusion of a report prepared by international experts on behalf of the American Chamber of Commerce, which warns that underfunding the sector is having serious consequences both for the health of the population and for the economy.

According to the report, thousands of Albanians die prematurely because of the low level of public investment in the healthcare system.

Beyond the human cost, the document estimates that the burden of disease reduces workforce productivity, hinders innovation and causes significant economic losses.

Last year, public healthcare spending in Albania averaged 330 euros per capita, a level approximately five times lower than in comparable countries in the region and ten times lower than the European Union average.

Experts argue that increasing public funds for medicine reimbursement, expanding access to modern therapies, and strengthening disease screening and early diagnosis programs would bring considerable benefits.

According to them, if Albania were to approach the funding levels of countries in the region, the economy could generate more than 560 million euros in additional output every year.

The report recommends that the government adopt a gradual plan to raise public healthcare funding to 4% of gross domestic product by 2030, from the current 2.9%.

Achieving this objective would require 457 million euros in additional funding.

Of this amount, 287 million euros would be used to expand reimbursement for medicines, modern therapies and preventive programs, while the remainder would be invested in primary healthcare, support for medical staff, infrastructure maintenance and digitalization.

The authors of the report stress that this should not be viewed as a burden on the budget, but as an investment with a high economic return, since improving the health of the population directly affects productivity growth and economic development.

The World Health Organization also estimates that countries spending less than 3% of gross domestic product on healthcare are the ones that benefit most from increased investment in the sector.

However, the report notes that projections in the Medium-Term Budget Program indicate a further decline in the share of public healthcare spending relative to the economy.

According to the authors, this approach risks deepening social and economic costs at a time when increased investment in healthcare is needed.
