On Monday, the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, received representatives of the European Interreligious Councils, who are in Tirana for the European Forum “Shared Sacred Flourishing”.

During the meeting, the head of state highlighted the importance of the forum for strengthening interfaith dialogue and promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation among religious communities in Europe.

Begaj stated that Albania represents a model of harmony, interreligious coexistence, and hospitality, describing these as part of the national identity.

“Albania is a model of harmony, interreligious coexistence, and hospitality. These values are part of our identity, and I hope that during your stay you will experience them firsthand,” the President said during the conversation with the Interreligious Councils’ representatives.

Begaj also referred to the communist dictatorship period, when Albania was declared an atheist state and places of worship were demolished or had their function changed.

“Although the dictatorial regime declared Albania the first atheist country in the world, demolished places of worship, or repurposed them, it could not erase Albanians’ faith in God,” Begaj declared.

The President praised the role of the Interreligious Council of Albania in promoting dialogue and cooperation among religious communities.

According to him, at a time when the world faces polarization, conflicts, and numerous challenges, interfaith dialogue remains an important tool for building trust, solidarity, and peace.

Begaj stressed that Albania will continue to contribute by promoting its model of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence.
