A 72-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in Prilep, while the driver immediately fled the scene.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, on 07.09.2026, at around 03:50, the Prilep Police Station was informed of an accident that occurred on Goce Delchev Boulevard. The vehicle hit pedestrian N.T. (72) from Prilep, after which the driver fled.

The injuries sustained in the collision were assessed as serious bodily injuries. The elderly man was taken for treatment to the General Hospital in Prilep, where his injuries were diagnosed.

The Prilep Police Station team conducted an inspection at the scene of the accident, while the investigation and measures to fully clarify the case are ongoing, the Ministry of Interior said.

The “Safe City” surveillance system does not let any traffic violation go undetected. Its cameras identified a Serbian citizen who, on two separate occasions, traveled at more than 160 km/h on sections of road where the maximum speed limit was 80 km/h.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that 34-year-old D.P. was arrested at the Tabanoc Border Crossing while leaving the country. An inspection of his Škoda vehicle established that he had twice driven at more than double the permitted speed. Police will file the appropriate criminal charges in connection with the case.

“On 22.07.2026, at 13:42, on the A1 motorway near Demir Kapija, D.P. was driving at 163 kilometers per hour, while on 20.08.2026, at 19:40, he was again recorded on the same section of road traveling at 169 kilometers per hour. In both cases, the permitted speed limit was 80 kilometers per hour,” police specified.

Over the past 24 hours, law enforcement officers have detained 18 drivers for dangerous behavior in traffic. Of these, 9 were intoxicated, 7 did not have a driver’s license, and 2 others had been banned from driving by a court ruling.

The nine drivers caught under the influence of alcohol are from Štip, Prilep, Demir Hisar, Bitola, Kumanovo and Negotino. The other seven who did not have a driver’s license are from Kumanovo, Skopje, Bitola, Gostivar and Čaška; two of them were minors. Officers also detained two people from Skopje and Kumanovo who were driving despite having had their licenses suspended.

Once the cases have been fully documented, police said the appropriate criminal charges will be filed.

Interior Minister Pançe Toshkovski announced that all candidates who successfully completed the selection process and passed the qualifying criteria will be enrolled in the Police High School.

Although the initial plan called for the admission of 200 students, following assessments, consultations and the allocation of the necessary funds, the Government decided to admit all applicants who meet the required conditions.

According to Toshkovski, approximately 300 candidates passed the qualifying criteria related to education, the required academic performance, conduct, physical characteristics and health.

“The total number of candidates who passed the qualifying criteria related to education, the required grades, conduct, and physical and health characteristics is around 300 children. We conducted a detailed analysis to determine whether we could admit them all, spoke with the Ministry of Finance, and the Government decided that we could accept everyone. It would truly be a shame to exclude any of the children who have met the requirements,” Toshkovski said.

The minister praised the strong interest in the educational institution, which is reopening after 26 years. More than 600 candidates applied to the school, which, according to him, demonstrates that young people want to build their careers in service to the state and the security of its citizens.

The school will begin operating on September 1, with students attending third- and fourth-year classes.

Toshkovski also stressed that every student who successfully graduates from the Police High School will join the Interior Ministry’s system, in accordance with the agreement signed with them.

“Everyone who successfully graduates from the Police High School will become part of the system. The Interior Ministry is required to provide all the necessary conditions for them to join the ministry. I am convinced that this generation will be the pride of the Interior Ministry in the future,” Toshkovski concluded.

Two residents of the village of Bansko, E.N. (21) and Xh.M. (29), were detained yesterday (25.08.2026) at 17:00 by police officers from the Strumica Police Department, North Macedonia’s Interior Ministry reported.

During a court-ordered search of E.N.’s home, police found packages of marijuana, as well as a cannabis plant stalk.

Xh.M. was also found at E.N.’s home, and marijuana was discovered on him during a search. The public prosecutor at the Strumica Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office was notified of the incident, while the Interior Ministry announced that the appropriate charges would be filed once the case had been fully documented.

Enhanced checks conducted throughout North Macedonia from 18.05.2026 to 31.07.2026 focused on riders of bicycles with auxiliary motors, mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles. The operations were carried out by the Traffic Affairs Department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

During these checks, 6,932 offenses committed by drivers of these categories of vehicles were recorded, while cyclists were found responsible for an additional 33 offenses.

According to Interior Ministry data, the highest number of violations was recorded by the Skopje Police Department, with 2,146 cases. It was followed by the Bitola Police Department with 992, the Veles Police Department with 856, the Kumanovo Police Department with 583, the Shtip Police Department with 544, the Tetovo Police Department with 541, the Ohrid Police Department with 420 and the Strumica Police Department with 327 offenses. The Mobile Road Traffic Safety Unit recorded 556 cases.

Of the total violations recorded, 5,678 involved driving these vehicles without wearing a protective helmet.

The measures prescribed by the Law on Road Traffic Safety were taken for each offense. In addition, another 15,715 offenses were recorded during the checks. Criminal charges were filed against 503 drivers under Article 297-a of the Criminal Code.

The Interior Ministry announced that the enhanced checks will continue throughout the country, with the aim of improving traffic safety and enforcing road rules. Foreign nationals traveling in North Macedonia with vehicles registered abroad can now verify traffic violations online and pay them electronically.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Astrit Iseni, said that the “Safe City” application has been put into operation and, in this initial phase, the service is intended for drivers of vehicles with foreign license plates.

The platform allows users to check violations recorded by the “Safe City” system, view the relevant payment orders, and make the payment online.

To use the service, the driver must photograph or scan their travel document, as well as enter the license plate of the vehicle they are driving in North Macedonia.

Iseni stressed that this option gives foreign drivers timely access to information about fines, avoiding unnecessary stops and waiting at border crossing points when paying them.

This step was taken as part of the digitalization of services operating in connection with the “Safe City” system.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced that in the next phases the application is expected to be offered to other categories of users as well.

A 59-year-old Latvian citizen, identified by the initials R.S., was detained by police on August 17, 2026, at around 10:00 p.m. in the village of Bogorodica, near Gevgelija.

According to a statement from North Macedonia’s Ministry of Interior, officers from the Bogorodica Police Station for Border Surveillance and Border Checks detained him while inspecting a Fiat Tipo passenger vehicle with Skopje license plates, which he was driving.

Ten migrants from Egypt were found inside the vehicle. They were taken to the Vinojug Reception and Transit Center in Gevgelija, while R.S. was handed over to the Gevgelija Police Station.

The Interior Ministry said that once the case has been fully documented, appropriate charges will be filed against the 59-year-old.

A 67-year-old man with the initials B.S. from Bitola was detained by police officers from the Bitola Internal Affairs Department. According to a statement from North Macedonia’s Ministry of Interior, the arrest took place yesterday (16.08.2026) at 15:40.

He is suspected of starting a fire at around 12:35 on “4 November” Street in Bitola. The flames engulfed dry grass and wooden pallets located at his former warehouse.

The Ministry of Interior said the fire was brought under control and extinguished by a team from the Bitola Territorial Firefighting Unit, and that no one was injured. A team from the Bitola Internal Affairs Department inspected the scene, and once the case has been fully documented, the appropriate charges will be filed against the suspect.

The Violent Crime Unit within the Violent Crime Department of the Skopje Police Department has filed criminal charges under an expedited procedure against S.J. (34), I.J. and S.J., all residents of the village of Bukoviq in the Skopje region. They are suspected of the criminal offense of “violence,” stipulated under Article 386, paragraph 3 of the Criminal Code.

According to the Interior Ministry, on August 12, 2026, in the village of Kopanicë in the Skopje region, the first suspect struck 25-year-old H.R. from the village of Arnaqija in the same region with a blunt object. Meanwhile, the other two suspects used blunt objects to damage his vehicle.

Two people were injured in a traffic accident that occurred today near the village of Tajmište, in the Kičevo region.

A passenger car and a truck were involved in the collision.

According to the Interior Ministry, the incident was reported to the Kičevo Department of Internal Affairs at around eight o’clock. A man and a woman traveling in the passenger car were injured in the accident and were subsequently taken to Kičevo Hospital for treatment.

Police are at the scene, while further details are expected to be released once the investigation is complete.
