Acting Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla reacted after human remains were discovered at a third location in Zubin Potok, saying the finding once again confirms the genocide committed by Serbia.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Gërvalla said the latest discovery bears witness to the crimes of the Serbian state, during which thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children, were killed, disappeared and raped during the war, while nearly one million people were forcibly expelled from their homes.

According to her, this event also shows that any information that could help clarify the fate of those forcibly disappeared during the last war in Kosovo must be treated seriously.

Gërvalla stressed that the consequences of war crimes do not end when they are committed. She said that concealing the victims and attempts to erase traces of the crimes have prolonged the families’ suffering and turned the search for the truth into an obligation that continues to this day.

“For this reason, no information and no suspected location can be left without being examined with the utmost seriousness,” the acting justice minister’s statement said.

Kosovo Police and the Special Prosecution Office announced in a statement that human remains had also been found at the third suspected location during excavations in Zubin Potok.

Excavations in the village of Kalludër e Vogël in Zubin Potok have entered their fourth day, while teams have discovered additional human remains during searches for a suspected mass grave from the last war in Kosovo. According to KosovaPress sources, the discovery was made during Thursday’s work, while determining their identity will only be possible after forensic examinations and DNA analyses.

The initial suspicions are linked to the group known as the “intellectuals from Mitrovica,” who have been missing since April 19, 1999. However, confirmation of whether the remains belong to them will only be made after the exhumation and forensic procedures have been completed.

Yesterday, the site where the searches are being conducted was also visited by Blerim Isufaj, the Chief Prosecutor of the Special Prosecution Office, as well as representatives of the country’s institutions.

Isufaj said that the remains discovered so far had been confirmed to be of human origin. He explained that the possible identification of the individuals would be carried out through DNA analyses.

The Chief Prosecutor stressed that the process requires time, care and adherence to professional forensic standards. According to him, institutions should avoid rushed statements, as the publication of unconfirmed data could affect the investigation.

The searches began on Tuesday and are being carried out by teams from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, the Kosovo Police and other competent institutions, under the direction and supervision of the Special Prosecution Office. The work is expected to continue over the coming days, until all necessary procedures have been completed.

Albulena Haxhiu, acting president of the country, visited the village of Kalludër in Zubin Potok, where Kosovo institutions are conducting excavations to locate people forcibly disappeared during the latest war in Kosovo.

During the visit, Haxhiu said that the responsible institutions were on the ground and working to shed light on the fate of the missing persons.

She said that she had come to Kalludër together with Deputy Chairwoman and Minister Bogujevci to observe firsthand the efforts of the teams seeking the truth about people forcibly disappeared during the latest war in Kosovo.

Haxhiu thanked the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo involved in the process, specifically mentioning the Police, the Prosecution, the Commission on Persons Forcibly Disappeared During the Latest War in Kosovo, and the Institute of Forensic Medicine, as well as all other institutions making every effort to uncover the truth.

According to her, it has so far been established that the remains found are of human origin, while the conclusion of the work by the competent institutions must be awaited before they can be examined and identified.

At the same time, Haxhiu called for the integrity of the investigation to be protected. She stressed that the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, the media, and everyone involved must exercise caution, as this is a highly sensitive matter. According to her, consideration must also be shown for the families waiting to learn what is happening at this location.

The acting president said that the fate of people forcibly disappeared remains the country’s deepest wound, even though more than 25 years have passed since the war.

Haxhiu added that the consequences of the war remain present today. She said that while every effort is being made in Kalludër to determine the whereabouts of people forcibly disappeared, hate speech, chauvinistic rhetoric, denial of crimes, and territorial claims against the Republic of Kosovo by the heads of institutions in Serbia continue.
