Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Glauk Konjufca has reacted to the state honors organized in Serbia for Ratko Mladic, who was convicted of genocide and war crimes.

In a post on X, Konjufca described the act as a deep moral and political disgrace, also criticizing the presence of acting ministers at the ceremony honoring Mladic.

“Honoring a convicted war criminal, whose crimes an international tribunal has described as ‘among the gravest known to humanity,’ is an act of deep moral and political disgrace,” Konjufca wrote.

According to him, the military honors and the involvement of government officials in the ceremony represent the institutional glorification of a figure convicted of genocide.

Konjufca placed this development in the context of Serbia’s political past, also mentioning the current president, Aleksandar Vučić, who served as information minister during Slobodan Milošević’s regime.

“For the Republic of Kosovo, this is not an abstract debate about history. Our people carry the memory of massacres, murdered civilians and children, mass expulsions and systematic violence carried out by Serbian state forces,” he said.

The acting minister stressed that Kosovo opposes any attempt to treat crimes established by the courts as matters of national interpretation, or convicted perpetrators as people deserving of honors.

“Genocide does not take on a different meaning over time, and denial cannot erase the dignity of those who were killed, persecuted and expelled. We stand alongside the Bosniak people, the victims and survivors of Srebrenica, as well as all the families whose suffering can never be reconciled with the glorification of those responsible for these crimes. There can be no genuine reconciliation without the truth, nor a credible European future built on honoring the perpetrators of crimes that shocked the conscience of humanity,” Konjufca wrote, among other things.

In a social media post, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha commemorated the 10th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s canonization, describing her as one of humanity’s greatest figures and “the most distinguished daughter of the Albanian nation.”

Berisha recalled September 5, 2016, when Pope Francis, in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, proclaimed Mother Teresa of Calcutta a saint.

According to him, her dedication to the poor, the sick, the abandoned and all those who suffered made Mother Teresa a figure of global stature. Berisha emphasized that she “was born Albanian, became a citizen of the world and remained, to the end, a proud daughter of her nation.”

Berisha described her canonization as an extraordinary honor for Albanians and as evidence of the contribution this nation has made to humanity through values, love and humanism.

At the end of his message, he expressed admiration and pride for Saint Mother Teresa.

Dear friends,

This is a special day for the Albanian nation and for the entire Christian world. Today we commemorate the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s canonization, the most distinguished daughter of the Albanian nation.

On September 5, 2016, in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Pope Francis proclaimed Mother Teresa of Calcutta a saint. Through her life, work and dedication to the poor and the needy, the Albanian woman became one of humanity’s greatest figures.

During that historic ceremony, Pope Francis described Mother Teresa as a “dispens­er of divine mercy.” This tribute honored an entire life devoted to people, especially those who had lost everything and needed nothing more than a helping hand and love.

Mother Teresa’s canonization was an extraordinary honor for Albanians. It was also the culmination of a remarkable life and a magnificent testament to the values that Albanians have brought in the service of humanity.

She was born Albanian, became a citizen of the world and remained, to the end, a proud daughter of her nation.

Today we remember Saint Mother Teresa with humility, admiration and pride. She devoted her life to the poorest, the sick, the abandoned and the suffering, giving millions of people hope, dignity and love.

Mother Teresa remains one of the brightest testimonies that the greatness of a nation is determined not only by its power or wealth, but also by the values, love and humanism it offers to humanity.

The KLA War Veterans’ Organization has condemned the honoring of Serbian military units, stating that such an act institutionalizes the denial of war crimes and protects impunity.

According to the KLA War Veterans’ Organization, ceremonies honoring these units cannot be described as commemorations as long as Serbia’s state, military and police archives remain closed and the fate of missing persons has yet to be clarified.

“Honoring Serbian military units while continuing to keep Serbia’s state archives closed and conceal evidence of war crimes is not commemoration. It is the institutionalization of denial and the protection of impunity,” the statement said.

The organization called on Belgrade to open its military and police archives and to disclose the fate of those who went missing during the war in Kosovo. It stressed that the truth cannot be covered up “with medals, state honors or rewritten narratives.”

The KLA War Veterans’ Organization believes that the failure to respond to the glorification of Serbian units further reinforces the denial of crimes. At the same time, the organization reiterated that Kosovo will uncompromisingly pursue truth and accountability for war crimes.
