Fushë-Arrëz residents will decide for themselves through a popular referendum whether they oppose the merger of their municipality.

Mayor Hil Curri announced this position, stressing that no discussions have yet been held with residents about the proposal, a move that he said would accelerate the abandonment of this northern town.

Curri argued that the Municipality of Fushë-Arrëz is not a financial burden on the government, as several heavy industry companies operate within its territory and their tax revenues are paid directly into the budget of the municipality he leads.

The Democratic Party mayor warned that the battle over this issue would go as far as the international courts. Meanwhile, local residents, together with the diaspora, are preparing to take to the streets in protest.

A massive fire has engulfed a forest area in Iballe, Fushë-Arrëz, above the Gere neighborhood. Firefighting vehicles could not approach due to the rugged mountain terrain, forcing the Fushë-Arrëz teams to remain at the center of the Administrative Unit.

Throughout the night, local residents and forestry service workers continued their efforts using improvised tools.

As the flames have spread over a considerable area within the Iballe-Mëzi forest economy, a call was made for aerial support from the Armed Forces.

Currently, helicopters are trying to limit the fire’s spread and keep the situation under control.

Initially, the fire broke out in a parcel with low vegetation, and initial evidence suggests it was an act of intentional arson.
