Representatives of the civic platform “Freedom Has a Name,” Ismail Tasholli and Eliza Hoxha, visited the Association of Political Prisoners, where they discussed the organization of the “March for Freedom,” scheduled to take place on September 12 in Pristina under the motto “Kosovo Is Waiting.”

During the meeting, Tasholli and Hoxha were received by Shefik Sadiku, chairman of the Association of Political Prisoners; Xhevat Gjini, chairman of the “Movement” society; and representatives of the Association’s leadership and membership.

The discussion focused on the need for broad civic participation in support of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi. It was also emphasized that the September 12 event should be inclusive and transcend political differences.

Ismail Tasholli said that the support of former political prisoners gives particular importance to the “March for Freedom.”

“The support of political prisoners for the March for Freedom carries special weight. These are people who paid with years in prison for their efforts toward Kosovo’s freedom, and they know its value better than anyone. On September 12, we want Pristina to bring together everyone who believes in justice, in the truth of our liberation war and in the return of our liberators to Kosovo. Kosovo is waiting,” Tasholli was quoted as saying in the statement.

Eliza Hoxha said that the march should convey a united civic stance in defense of Kosovo’s history, justice and dignity.

“On September 12, we are not marching for a party or a particular group. We are marching for our history and our truth, for the people who were part of our journey toward freedom. Therefore, this must be a march that brings us all together. Pristina must hear the voice of Kosovo, which is waiting for justice and the return of its liberators,” Hoxha said.

The Association’s support for the organization of the September 12 event was also confirmed by its chairman, Shefik Sadiku, who called on citizens to participate in large numbers.

“Political prisoners were an inseparable part of our people’s long struggle for freedom. Therefore, we strongly support the March for Freedom and will be part of it. On September 12, we must stand together in Pristina, to defend the truth of our war and to support those who are currently in The Hague,” Sadiku said.

Xhevat Gjini, in his capacity as chairman of the “Movement” society, also expressed his support for the march and highlighted the importance of uniting around the values of the liberation war.

“Kosovo’s freedom is the result of a long effort by many generations, which culminated in the war of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Today, we have a responsibility to defend this history and pass it on truthfully to the generations to come. Therefore, on September 12, we will join the March for Freedom in support of the liberators who are facing justice in The Hague,” Gjini said.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Association of Political Prisoners reiterated that it would fully support the “March for Freedom” and participate in the event taking place on September 12.

The “March for Freedom” will be held on September 12 in Pristina in support of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, under the motto “Kosovo Is Waiting.”

Kosovo’s Acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has honored the memory of Fazli Greiçevci and Cen Dugolli, who were killed on August 17 at Pristina Prison. Greiçevci lost his life in 1964, while Dugolli was killed 34 years later, in 1998.

In his commemorative message, Kurti stressed that Greiçevci and Dugolli were killed by the same power, in the same place and on the same date, but in two different years separated by a period of 34 years. He said that both activists are remembered on the anniversaries of their deaths.

Fazli Greiçevci, born in 1935 in Sankoc, Drenas, was a teacher, poet and political activist in the Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians. At the Normal School in Pristina, he had been classmates with Rexhep Qosja, while he shared the same political ideals with Adem Demaçi.

During the early 1960s, Greiçevci worked as a teacher in several villages in Drenica. Alongside his work in education, he also wrote poetry, some of which was published in the magazines “Jeta e Re” and “Zani i Rinisë.”

At the end of the summer of 1963, in Pristina, a group of young political activists founded the underground organization Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians. The organization was led by Adem Demaçi, while Fazli Greiçevci was among its leading activists.

Yugoslav security authorities arrested more than 300 members of the organization in June 1964. Although he was not among those detained, Greiçevci turned himself in to the police. Beginning on August 3, 1964, he was subjected to torture for two weeks at Pristina Prison and died on August 17, 1964. He was killed under torture by the Serbian authorities.

Cen Dugolli was born on September 25, 1966. During the 1990s, he was active in the Ferizaj branch of the Council for the Defense of Human Rights and Freedoms, in the humanitarian association “Mother Teresa,” and in the Independent Students’ Union at the Higher Technical School in Ferizaj.

Dugolli later joined the Kosovo Liberation Army, serving as a soldier in the Nerodime Operational Zone.

Serbian police arrested him on June 21, 1998, at his home in Ferizaj, where they also beat him in front of his family members. After his arrest, he was first taken to Gjilan Prison and was later transferred to Pristina Prison. There, he was tortured by the Serbian security and judicial authorities.

As a result of the torture, Dugolli fell into a coma on August 16. He was subsequently transported to Pristina Hospital, where he died on August 17, 1998.

Kurti paid tribute to Fazli Greiçevci, Cen Dugolli and all those who lost their lives to the violence of the Serbian regime while working for Kosovo’s freedom.

After rallies held in Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia, a similar protest will also be held today in Croatia, starting at 18:00, calling for the release of the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. The final decision on them is expected to be delivered on September 16 at 10:00.

According to the Organization of War Veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army, there is hope that this will be the last protest, as they believe that in September the liberators will return home.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers have charged former Kosovo president Hashim Thaçi, former parliament speakers Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, as well as former MP Rexhep Selimi, with war crimes and crimes against humanity.

All four have rejected the charges against them. Since the start of the court proceedings in 2023, protests in support of them have been held in Kosovo and in other countries as well.
