The European Democrats have responded to the civic protest that has been taking place in Tirana for more than two months, expressing their support for citizens demanding clean institutions, protection of the coastline and a political class that takes responsibility for its decisions.

In a social media post, the organization stressed that Tirana’s boulevard was once again filled with protesters last weekend, despite the heat and the holidays.

“This weekend, Tirana’s boulevard filled up again, marking the 64th consecutive day of protest. The summer heat, the holidays, the fatigue: none of these has thinned the crowds. Albanians are demanding clean institutions, a protected coastline and a political class that answers for its choices,” the statement said.

The European Democrats added that neither Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government nor the opposition led by Sali Berisha has given the protesters a convincing response.

“Neither Edi Rama’s government nor Sali Berisha’s opposition has given them a serious response, and it is precisely this vacuum that explains why the movement continues to grow. This is civic courage that Europe recognizes. We stand with them.”

“Prime Minister Edi Rama says the ‘Flamingo Revolution’ is an example of disinformation and foreign interference, warning that hostile actors are exploiting protests, viral content and public anger to destabilize Albania as it moves closer to the EU.

Disinformation and foreign interference are serious threats, Prime Minister Rama. They must never become an excuse to downplay a powerful civic movement. The Flamingo Revolution was sparked by a real agreement, with real environmental consequences and real questions about Albania’s democratic future. Listen to your people. Albania’s path toward the EU must come before deals that benefit the Trump family,” the statement said.

The reaction comes after Minister Snežana Paunović erupted with a provocative statement, claiming that if she had been in Slobodan Milošević’s place in 1998, she would have “ethnically cleansed” Kosovo.

From the EDP headquarters, this statement was described as scandalous and completely intolerable. “It constitutes open support for forced displacement, persecution and crimes against humanity, while legitimising the very agenda for which Slobodan Milošević was indicted,” the party’s statement stressed.

Gozi stated bluntly: “President Aleksandar Vučić must unequivocally condemn these expressions and ensure her immediate removal from office.”

The European Democrats’ reaction went on to argue that Serbia cannot convincingly demonstrate commitment to European Union membership when senior officials of its executive revive the phraseology and worldview of the Milošević era. “Respect for European values begins with a clear rejection of the language of ethnic cleansing – without any ambiguity or justification,” the statement concluded.
