Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, held a meeting with the newly appointed head of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Ambassador Dirk Schuebel.

During the meeting, Kurti congratulated the ambassador on his new post and welcomed him to Kosovo, expressing readiness for close cooperation. At the same time, Ambassador Schuebel congratulated the prime minister on his re-election to this post and on the formation of the new Government.

Kurti stated that Kosovo remains committed to the goal of becoming part of the European Union, through a merit-based process. He noted that the country is fully aligned with the EU’s foreign and security policy, while also sharing its vision and common values.

According to the prime minister, Kosovo has made continuous progress in consolidating democracy, protecting human rights and freedoms, strengthening the rule of law, etc.

Part of the discussion was also devoted to the necessity of institutional stability for the implementation of the Reform Agenda related to European Union membership. Kurti stressed that these reforms are mainly legal in character and require a functional Assembly.

During the conversation, the prime minister also spoke about economic development, increased investments and government programs aimed at improving welfare, development and employment growth.

In a published statement, it said that the unexpected oil revenues have been partially offset by the strengthening of the currency, as well as by subsidies granted to oil companies and refineries, which has limited the positive effect on the Russian economy.

The EU Office emphasizes in the statement that “In the first four months of 2026, Russia’s budget deficit reached 5.9 trillion rubles, significantly higher than the 3.8 trillion rubles planned for the entire year. It is also reported that more than 200,000 businesses have closed since January.”

According to the published figures, interest rates in Russia remain high, while corporate debt has increased significantly since the start of the war in Ukraine. The country is also facing a labor shortage, tax increases, and shrinking domestic demand.

According to the EU, the 20 adopted sanctions packages continue to restrict Russia’s access to technology, finance, logistics, and energy markets, creating long-term costs for its economy.

The statement also stresses that rising oil prices may provide only temporary relief, but do not reverse the structural economic damage, as pressure on Russia remains ongoing.
