At a meeting held today, Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Bozhinovska received Nicole Varns, Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy. During the talks, the two sides focused on the progress of energy projects, the alignment of the legal framework with European Union standards, and upcoming initiatives in the energy sector.

Ms. Varns praised the commitment of the minister and the ministry she leads to securing the country’s energy autonomy, stressing that this is essential to building a stable and prosperous state.

A central topic of discussion was the gas interconnector with Greece, construction of which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The gas pipeline connection with Serbia, which is progressing at an accelerated pace, was also discussed. Minister Bozhinovska described these two initiatives as strategic and emphasized that they would transform the region’s energy map.

The meeting also addressed Macedonia’s formal accession to the Vertical Gas Corridor, scheduled for September. This corridor represents one of Europe’s key initiatives to diversify natural gas sources and strengthen energy security in Southeastern, Central and Eastern Europe, paving the way for the country to secure a stronger position on the global stage.

During the meeting, Minister Bozhinovska stated that investing in energy is an investment in the future. According to her, work is proceeding at an accelerated pace to bring energy projects to fruition and fulfill the obligations arising from the Reform Agenda. “We are building energy links with the region and, through it, with the world,” she emphasized, adding that the benefits of these projects would be tangible and concrete, serving the interests of the people and the state.

She made these comments during the Informal Ministerial Council of the Energy Community in Pristina, attended by ministers from the Western Balkans, as well as representatives of the European Commission and the Energy Community Secretariat.

According to Bozhinovska, Macedonia is aiming to build a fully interconnected regional energy system, which in the future will integrate electricity, gas, and hydrogen networks. She also underlined that the country is actively working toward integration into the European energy market.

The minister said that the gas interconnector with Greece is expected to be completed by 2027, while the one with Serbia is in the preparatory phase and is projected to be completed around 2028. According to her, these projects will make possible new sources of supply, including liquefied natural gas via Greece.

At the meeting, Macedonia’s progress in aligning with European legislation in the field of energy was assessed, as was the launch of the intraday electricity market.

The minister stressed that the future of the region is tied to joint action and that integration into the European energy system will bring greater energy security, competitiveness, and investment attraction.

Special attention was given to the need to diversify supply sources, strengthen interconnections, and increase domestic energy production.
