She stressed that the Ministry of Education and Science, together with the Government, for the second year in a row has provided full funding for travel expenses and registration fees for these young talents, with the aim of ensuring that their families are not burdened with additional financial costs.

“This is how it will continue to be. Our talents deserve full support to advance, develop their knowledge and show that Macedonia has young people who compete on equal terms with the best in the world,” Janevska said.

The Ministry underlined that support for students taking part in prestigious international competitions is part of its commitments to encourage excellence in education and create conditions for young people to develop their skills and represent the country at the highest level.

This year, the Ministry of Education and Science competition предусмотрено more than 25,000 available places in 109 public high schools across the country. Of that number, more than 17,000 places were intended for vocational education, around 6,000 for grammar schools, and 570 for arts education.

Official data show that 13,423 students were admitted in the first enrollment period, while another 2,927 were enrolled in the second period. Of the overall total, 11,171 students will continue their studies in the Macedonian language, 4,241 in Albanian, 279 in Turkish, and 14 in Serbian.

The greatest interest among ninth-grade graduates was in vocational education, where a total of 10,823 students enrolled. Meanwhile, 4,653 students chose grammar schools, while 229 enrolled in the Sports Academy.

For those students who submitted documents in the second enrollment period, in cases where the number of candidates is higher than the available places, the classification test will be organized on June 29. The results will also be announced on the same day.

She explained that the laws provide solutions for teachers who may be left without students, giving them the opportunity, with their consent, to work as educational assistants for a one-year period. Janevska underlined that no action will be taken by force, but only in a transparent manner, with the approval of the educational staff and in cooperation with the municipalities, UNICEF, and the World Bank.

Presenting the reasons for this process, Janevska said that two-thirds of all school facilities in Macedonia are regional schools, while only 12% of the total number of students attend classes in them. She added that in around 100 school facilities, fewer than 5 children are studying.

According to her, these schools should be integrated into larger institutions so that students have more opportunities for socialization and education in better conditions. Janevska stressed that the best interest of children is the main reason for optimizing the school network, while as a secondary benefit she mentioned savings in municipal funds, which could then be invested in infrastructure.

She also presented data showing that over the past 20 years, the number of students has decreased by 28%, while the number of teachers has increased by 46%. As a result, the national average has fallen from 18 students per teacher to 11.4 students per teacher, compared with the OECD average of 15 students per teacher.

“I believe that we finally have a sustainable system for the procurement and distribution of school textbooks and that this issue, which we inherited unresolved, has now been solved. It took time, but it was necessary to overcome it, as well as every other problem we encountered. As a Government and as a Ministry, we remain focused on other aspects of education, with the aim of improving the quality of the educational process,” Janevska said.

She also announced that during this year, training sessions were held for school services so that the electronic application for ordering textbooks would be completed properly, while, according to her, the schools successfully fulfilled this obligation.

During the month of April, completely new sets of textbooks were secured and distributed for grades one through three, with a print run of nearly 250,000 copies. The statement says that over the two-year period, thanks to lower printing prices achieved, around 45 million denars have been saved.

“In the coming days, the distribution of school textbooks for fourth grades and higher grades in primary and secondary education will also begin. Orders have been placed, textbooks are being printed for all subjects, including textbooks in all foreign languages, which were unavailable in recent years, while since last year they have been available.
