“You have devastated our region.” These were the first words spoken by Lazër Bashi, the man who was injured in the attack in which Prelë and Lekë Gjoni, father and son, were shot dead in the Dukagjin area.

Bashi survived the barrage of bullets and, wounded in the shoulder, walked around two kilometres in search of help.

According to his testimony, Bashi happened to be sitting in the back of the vehicle with Prelë and Lekë Gjoni when they came under fire.

The attackers are suspected of using two weapons, a Kalashnikov and an MP5, firing more than 50 bullets.

At the time of the attack, Bashi lay down inside the vehicle and was hit by a bullet in the shoulder. He remained hidden for several minutes, until the attackers left the scene.

The vehicle had lost control and overturned onto one side. After making sure the attackers were no longer there, Bashi managed to get out of the vehicle, taking his mobile phone with him.

However, the area where the attack took place had no mobile signal. For this reason, the wounded man walked for around 40 minutes through difficult mountainous terrain, covering nearly two kilometres on foot.

Phone call

As soon as he reached a café near the junction where the Pult road connects with the road to Shosh, Bashi called a relative. The first words he said were: “You have devastated our region.”

He then explained that he had been in the vehicle with Prelë and Lekë Gjoni and that the two men had been killed on the spot.

Bashi washed the blood flowing from his wound at a fountain near the café and then waited for transport to Shkodër Regional Hospital.

Because of the considerable loss of blood, he was later transferred to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana for more specialised treatment. He is currently out of danger.

Police still without suspects

Shkodër Police and the Prosecutor’s Office are continuing their investigation to identify those responsible for the double murder and the wounding.

So far, no person has been identified as the perpetrator of the incident. Officers have brought in several people for questioning, but there is still no concrete information about their responsibility.

The main lines of investigation include Lekë Gjoni’s divorce around three months ago and a conflict that took place several years ago.

However, the family members have said they are unaware of any recent conflict.

Prelë and Lekë Gjoni were returning from their former home in Dukagjin, where they also kept several beehives, heading towards Shkodër. They were ambushed on Xhani Road.

Lekë Gjoni worked with a truck, transporting construction materials and an excavator in the Dukagjin area. According to information made public, he was not known as a problematic person and moved freely around the area.

The difficult mountainous terrain, the lack of a mobile signal and the fact that the area is not monitored by security cameras have significantly complicated the investigators’ work.

Bashi arriti të mbijetojë pas breshërisë së plumbave dhe i plagosur në shpatull, bëri një lëvizje prej rreth dy kilometrash në këmbë për të kërkuar ndihmë.

Më pas, ai ka treguar se si ndodhej në automjet me Prelë dhe Lekë Gjonin dhe se dy burrat kishin mbetur të vrarë në vend.

Bashi ka pastruar gjakun që i rridhte nga plagosja në një çezmë pranë lokalit dhe më pas ka pritur transportin drejt Spitalit Rajonal të Shkodrës.

Për shkak të humbjes së konsiderueshme të gjakut, ai është dërguar më pas drejt Spitalit të Traumës në Tiranë për trajtim më të specializuar. Aktualisht ndodhet jashtë rrezikut për jetën.

Policia ende pa autorë

Policia e Shkodrës dhe Prokuroria vijojnë hetimet për identifikimin e autorëve të vrasjes së dyfishtë dhe plagosjes.

Deri tani nuk ka një person të identifikuar si autor i ngjarjes. Efektivët kanë shoqëruar disa persona për t’i marrë në pyetje, por nuk ka ende të dhëna konkrete për përgjegjësinë e tyre.

Mes pistave kryesore të hetimit janë një divorc i Lekë Gjonit, rreth tre muaj më parë dhe një konflikt i ndodhur disa vite më parë.

Megjithatë, familjarët kanë deklaruar se nuk kanë dijeni për ndonjë konflikt të kohëve të fundit.

Prelë dhe Lekë Gjoni po ktheheshin nga banesa e tyre e vjetër në Dukagjin, ku mbanin edhe disa koshere bletësh, në drejtim të Shkodrës. Ata u zunë në pritë në rrugën e Xhanit.

Lekë Gjoni punonte me një kamion, duke transportuar materiale ndërtimi dhe një eskavator në zonën e Dukagjinit. Sipas informacioneve të bëra publike, ai nuk njihej si person problematik dhe lëvizte lirshëm në zonë.

Terreni i vështirë malor, mungesa e sinjalit telefonik dhe fakti që zona nuk është e monitoruar nga kamera sigurie e kanë vështirësuar ndjeshëm punën e hetuesve.

Last night, a double murder shocked Shkodër, where two people, 82-year-old Prelë Gjoni and his 57-year-old son, Lekë Gjoni, were shot dead, while Lazër Bashi, who happened to be in the vehicle, was wounded.

The SUV they were traveling in was riddled with bullets.

The two victims were returning from their old home in Dukagjin toward Shkodër when, before they had even left the road in the village of Xhan, two unidentified individuals opened fire on them, killing the father and son and wounding another person.

The injured man was taken to Shkodër Hospital and later transferred to Tirana for specialized treatment. He is currently in stable condition and out of danger. Lazër Bashi miraculously survived the attack while he was in the rear of the SUV.

Dozens of police officers and members of the RENEA special unit immediately arrived at the scene, launching searches in the area to identify, and subsequently locate and arrest, the perpetrators.

Police found more than 50 bullet casings at the scene. Two weapons were used—an AK-47 assault rifle and an MP5—confirming that at least two people fired at the SUV carrying the two victims.

Testimonies

The victims’ relatives told police that Prelë and Lekë Gjoni had no conflicts and said they had no idea who the perpetrators might be. The family confirmed that, one day before the killings, the father and son had gone to the old residence, where they kept several beehives, and were returning normally toward Grudë in Shkodër, where they lived.

Investigation

Police are currently focusing their suspicions in this murder case on the 57-year-old man’s divorce from his wife three months ago. They have four children together. However, there is still no concrete evidence linking the killings to the divorce, but this is the lead on which the investigative team focused immediately after the double murder.

Lekë Gjoni worked with a truck and, in recent days, had transported construction materials for a house in the village of Gjuraj in Dukagjin. He also had an excavator and was working with another local resident. Police did not know him as a problematic person, and there is no information about any possible external conflicts.

Police and the prosecutor’s office are continuing their investigation to fully clarify the incident. Linking the evidence to possible perpetrators remains difficult because of the rugged mountainous terrain, the lack of mobile phone signal in the area, and the fact that the roads and forests are not monitored by security cameras.

Menjëherë në vendngjarje mbërritën dhjetëra forca policie dhe efektivët e RENEA, duke nisur kontrolle në zonë për identifikimin e më pas gjetjen dhe kapjen e autorëve.

Policia ka konstatuar në vendngjarje mbi 50 gëzhoja plumbash ndërsa janë përdorur dy armë, një automatik kallashnikov dhe një MP5 duke konfirmuar se të paktën dy persona, kanë qëlluar në drejtim të fouristadës ku ndodheshin dy viktimat.

Deshmitë

Të afërmit e viktimave kanë treguar për policinë se Prelë dhe Lekë Gjoni nuk kishin konflikte dhe sipas tyre nuk kanë asnjë ide se kush mund të jenë autorët e vrasjes. Familjarët konfirmuan se një ditë para vrasjes babë e bir kishin shkuar në banesën e vjetër ku mbajnë disa bletë dhe se po ktheheshin normalisht drejt Grudës në Shkodër ku banojnë.

Hetimet

Dyshimet momentale të policisë për këtë vrasje janë tek divorci i 57 vjeçarit tre muaj më parë me bashkëshorten e tij me të cilën ka 4 fëmijë. Megjithatë ende nuk ka prova konkrete që e lidhin vrasjen me divorcin por kjo është pista ku grupi hetimor është fokusuar menjëherë pas vrasjes së dyfishtë.

Lekë Gjoni punonte me një kamion dhe ditët e fundit kishte ngarkuar materiale ndërtimi për një banesë në fshatin Gjuraj të Dukagjinit dhe po ashtu kishte edhe një eskavator bashkë me një shtetas tjetër të zonës që po ashtu punonin. Për policinë nuk njihej si person problematik ndërsa nuk ka informacione për konflikte të jashtme të mundshme.

Policia vijon hetimet bashkë me prokurorinë për zbardhjen e plotë të ngjarjes ndërsa lidhja e provave me autorët e mundshëm mbetet e vështirë për shkak të terrenit të thyer malor, mungesës së sinjalit telefonik atje dhe faktit që rrugët dhe pyjet nuk kanë monitorim nga kamera sigurie.

The lifeless body of the 40-year-old was found by a passerby, who immediately notified the authorities about the serious incident. The police’s initial investigation has focused on the possibility of a blood feud, as family members said the victim had been living under the threat of revenge since 2017. This is because the victim, Aleksandër Koçeku, is the brother of Vasel Koçeku, who was arrested for the murder of 20-year-old Pavlin Preka on February 26, 2025.

Details from Preka’s murder

The incident took place on February 20, 2025, in the Gucia e Re area, in the Rrethina administrative unit of Shkodra. Investigative sources suspect the killing may have been motivated by a long-running conflict linked to the victim’s wish to become engaged to Vasel Koçeku’s daughter, who at the time was 13 years old.

The story began around three years ago, when Pavlin Preka had asked the Koçeku family for the daughter’s hand in engagement. At that time, the girl was only 13 years old, now 16, while Preka was 17. The request was immediately rejected by her father, Koçeku, on the grounds that the girl was underage. However, over the following years, Preka continued to persist over the girl, expressing his feelings to other people as well.

The Koçeku family did not accept it, considering it unacceptable because of the girl’s minor age, while on several occasions they were told what the victim was saying. According to the investigation, it is suspected that on the morning of February 20, Klaudio Lisaj, an acquaintance of both the victim and the Koçeku family, took Pavlin Preka out of his home in Guci e Re. Then, according to the prosecution’s suspicions, Vasel Koçeku shot him with a firearm, causing his immediate death.

The lifeless body of the 20-year-old was found several hours later by family members after he failed to answer phone calls. A relative of his, specifically the victim’s uncle, told authorities that Pavlin Preka had no problems with anyone and that he lived quietly and without trouble between Shkodra and Dukagjin. The investigation into Pavlin Preka’s murder is ongoing, with the aim of fully clarifying the circumstances and motives of this grave event that shook Shkodra 10 months ago.
