Dukagjin Maxhuni has been released after spending nearly three weeks in detention in Serbia and is now returning to his family.

The announcement was made by lawyer Arianit Koci, who said that from the moment of Maxhuni’s arrest, he had assessed the allegations of his involvement in war crimes as unfounded, “Bota Sot” reports.

According to Koci, Serbian authorities arrested Maxhuni on August 12 in Batrovc while he was traveling from Serbia to Croatia. He was initially detained for questioning and was later taken to Belgrade, where he was remanded in custody for 30 days over war crimes allegations.

The lawyer emphasized that he had maintained from the first day that Dukagjin Maxhuni was innocent and that the allegations against him were unfounded. Now, following his release, Maxhuni is returning to his family.

Koci said he would continue his professional efforts on behalf of other Kosovo citizens who, according to him, continue to be unjustly detained in Serbia.

He said that although his options are limited, he would do everything possible in his professional capacity to secure their release. Koci added that he would act wherever and whenever a Kosovo citizen needed help, describing this as his mission.

Dukagjin Maxhuni është lënë i lirë pas afro tri javësh qëndrimi në paraburgim në Serbi dhe tashmë po kthehet te familja e tij.

Njoftimin e dha avokati Arianit Koci, i cili tha se, që në momentin e arrestimit, kishte vlerësuar se akuzat për përfshirjen e Maxhunit në krime lufte ishin të pabazuara, përcjell “Bota sot”.

Sipas sqarimit të Kocit, autoritetet serbe e arrestuan Maxhunin më 12 gusht në Batrovc, teksa po udhëtonte nga Serbia drejt Kroacisë. Ai fillimisht u ndalua për verifikim, ndërsa më pas u dërgua në Beograd, ku iu caktua masa prej 30 ditësh paraburgim nën pretendimet për krime lufte.

Avokati theksoi se prej ditës së parë kishte deklaruar se Dukagjin Maxhuni ishte i pafajshëm dhe se pretendimet e ngritura kundër tij nuk qëndronin. Tani, pas lirimit, Maxhuni po rikthehet pranë familjes së vet.

Koci bëri të ditur se do ta vijojë angazhimin profesional edhe për qytetarët e tjerë të Kosovës që, sipas tij, vazhdojnë të mbahen padrejtësisht në Serbi.

Ai deklaroi se, megjithëse mundësitë e tij janë të kufizuara, do të bëjë edhe të pamundurën në planin profesional për lirimin e tyre. Koci shtoi se do të angazhohet kudo dhe kurdo që një qytetar i Kosovës të ketë nevojë për ndihmë, duke e cilësuar këtë si misionin e tij.

Serbian judicial authorities have opened criminal proceedings against Dukagjin Maxhuni, a citizen of the Republic of Kosovo, imposing 30 days of pretrial detention over allegations related to war crimes committed in 1999.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora said it had responded through the Liaison Office of the Republic of Kosovo in Serbia, immediately undertaking the necessary diplomatic actions.

As part of these steps, the MFA informed the Delegation of the European Union in Serbia and sent a note verbale to the diplomatic missions of the Quint countries accredited in that state. The aim is to involve international partners in guaranteeing the rights and safety of the Kosovar citizen.

Jetish Jashari, the Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Serbia, is maintaining regular contact with the family of Dukagjin Maxhuni. Meanwhile, through the Liaison Office, an official request will be submitted for permission to visit him, which is expected to take place during the coming week.

The MFA said that the Liaison Office in Serbia would closely monitor the situation and use all necessary diplomatic instruments to protect the rights of all citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.
