The epidemiological situation in Gostivar remains stable, while the relevant health institutions continue to monitor it closely, the Ministry of Health announced.

On August 1, 57 patients underwent initial examinations, three fewer than the previous day, when the number was 60.

No new hospital admissions were recorded over the past 24 hours.

Ministry data show that, as of August 1, a total of 1,041 cases of infectious diseases had been reported in Gostivar, while health services had conducted 734 epidemiological surveys.

Health authorities announced that the citizens of Krushevo can once again consume water from the public network, after three consecutive laboratory checks revealed no irregularities.

According to confirmation from the Center for Public Health in Prilep, the water sample meets all bacteriological and chemical standards, while the chlorine presence falls within permitted limits.

Based on this data, the Food and Veterinary Agency carried out the final inspection and revoked the decision that had prohibited the use of the city’s water supply.

The restriction had taken effect on July 23, after a routine analysis had identified traces of fecal bacteria. Meanwhile, the Center for Public Health emphasizes that water from roadside springs along the road leading to Krushevo remains non-potable, as tests still show bacteriological contamination.

Almost six months have passed since Struga was left without clean drinking water for two months, but residents still have not received an answer as to who is responsible for the turbidity of the springs in the village of Shum.

The only measure that remains in force is the ban on two legal entities from Veleshta from carrying out excavations above the springs, due to suspicions of criminal offenses – illegal exploitation of mineral raw materials and pollution of drinking water. The Public Prosecutor’s Office, responding to Alsat, stated that actions are being taken.

“Investigative actions are being taken and the results of one more expert examination are awaited, after which the public prosecutor will make a decision,” the Prosecutor’s Office said.

Meanwhile, the director of the water utility company in Struga, Jovanço Meçkaroski, says they have not yet undertaken any activity to remediate the springs in Shum, as they are awaiting instructions from the Public Prosecutor’s Office. According to him, the water is currently of good quality and there is no cause for concern.

“In Struga, at the moment, there is no reason for fear or panic and the unpleasant event in Gostivar is not being misused, however there is a certain degree of concern and caution among citizens. Authorities in Valandovo have banned citizens from drinking tap water, after tests by the Institute of Public Health found a higher concentration of arsenic.

The municipal utility announced that the water can only be used for technical purposes, while additional inspections and analyses will continue until its purity is confirmed.

According to specialists, the recorded arsenic amount does not pose an immediate health risk if exposure is short-term, but prolonged ingestion may have harmful effects.

In Debarca, residents have raised concerns about suspected sewage discharge into the Sateska River and are demanding institutional intervention with on-site inspections. Likewise, in Prilep, after photos of murky water were posted on social media, citizens have requested additional tests.

The public utility “Municipal Service” has reported that an elevated presence of arsenic has been registered in the drinking water of the Valandovo water supply network.

Laboratory tests carried out by the Institute of Public Health in Skopje showed an exceedance of permitted limits, prompting authorities to advise residents to stop consuming the water until new results come out that guarantee it poses no risk.

The municipal utility clarifies that the liquid may be used exclusively for sanitary and hygienic purposes, while additional verifications and further examinations have been undertaken in coordination with the relevant bodies.

The population is urged to follow official instructions and not to use the water for drinking or cooking until a subsequent notice confirms its re-suitability.

Meanwhile, more than 1,200 residents have sought medical treatment at Gostivar General Hospital, reporting complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting.

An extraordinary inspection found that a pump had been installed without authorization and illegally on the main water pipeline, directly sending water from the Vardar River into the city’s supply system.

“Following a notification received from the Public Prosecutor of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Gostivar to conduct an extraordinary inspection at the water treatment station in the village of Vrutok, Municipality of Gostivar, aimed at verifying the safety and quality of drinking water in this supply system, and following citizens’ complaints submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office and a report by the Gostivar Interior Ministry office concerning the safety and quality of the water, FVA inspection services, together with representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and Interior Ministry forensic technicians, conducted an extraordinary inspection last night. Specialists from the Institute of Public Health, who were present during the inspection, took water samples for laboratory analysis to determine its safety. To prevent a greater risk to the population of this region, the FVA imposed a temporary ban on the use of water for drinking until laboratory results confirming its safety are received,” the FVA said in a statement.

According to the “Dr. Ferid Murad” General Hospital in Gostivar, cases with similar symptoms have emerged over the past 3–4 days. The health institution said it has increased staffing in the departments facing the largest influx of patients.

“Regarding the epidemic that has spread in Gostivar over these past 3–4 days, we have a large number of patients who have received medical assistance at our institution. For this reason, we have reinforced medical staff in the departments with the highest number of patients. Most patients present with the same symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, weakness, etc. The largest number of patients with these symptoms are in the Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics and Emergency departments.”

“During these days, around 1,000–1,200 patients with these symptoms have presented at the ‘Dr. Ferid Murad’ General Hospital in Gostivar. All patients have received medical assistance and appropriate treatment,” the hospital said in a statement.

The Tetovo Department of Internal Affairs said there are suspicions that the public utility company “Water Supply,” in cooperation with the Municipality of Gostivar, had installed three pumps in a wastewater channel. Through them, water was allegedly injected into the main pipeline supplying the city.

It is suspected that the action was carried out to increase pressure in the network because of a shortage of drinking water, directly endangering the health of Gostivar residents.

The case was also reported to the Tetovo Department of Internal Affairs. Following the actions taken, it was assessed that the possible cause may have been the introduction of contaminated water into the city’s water supply system from the pumping point in the village of Vrutok, with the aim of increasing pressure in the network.

“On 16.07.2026, at around 18:20, inspectors from the External Office for Criminal Affairs in Gostivar, acting on instructions from the Public Prosecutor of the Gostivar Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office, took urgent measures and carried out field activities in the village of Vrutok due to suspicions of contamination of the water supplying the city of Gostivar,” the Tetovo Department of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

The Tetovo Department of Internal Affairs said investigations are continuing to fully clarify the case, due to suspicions of the criminal offence of “Contamination of Drinking Water,” provided for and punishable under Article 219 of the Criminal Code.

The Public Health Centre in Gostivar said analyses to determine water quality are still ongoing.

So far, neither the Municipality nor the municipal water supply company has provided an explanation to citizens.
