The European Union has called on Kosovo’s institutions to suspend any further demolitions of buildings in the area of Lake Ujman until the competent court reaches a final decision on the ownership claims.

Anitta Hipper, spokesperson for the EU’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, on foreign policy and security issues, was asked about the demolition of buildings owned by the public company “Ibër-Lepenc” in Zubin Potok, and whether Brussels was considering taking measures if the demolitions continued.

“We regret the demolition of the houses, especially given that the ownership claims remain under judicial review,” Hipper said, according to KosovaPress.

She stressed that the EU was calling on Kosovo’s institutions not to carry out any further demolitions and to cooperate with the affected residents and local authorities to reach sustainable solutions that comply with the law.

According to Hipper, all action with irreversible consequences, including demolitions, should be halted until the competent court issues a final decision on the ownership claims that remain unresolved.

He stressed that operations to free public property will not stop in the face of any usurpation, regardless of the ethnic origin of those involved.

“The lands in question are not just in temporary use, but are the full property of ‘Ibër-Lepenc’ since the expropriation carried out for the lake project in 1973. Our system constitutes vital infrastructure and full control over it is non-negotiable. Furthermore, the lake is an essential water source on which the supply of one-third of the population of the Republic of Kosovo depends,” Mujka stated.

Speaking about future plans, he added that the campaign to clear state lands of illegal constructions will extend to all areas where violations are found, without distinction of nationality, describing this as an unstoppable mission to protect the assets of ‘Ibër-Lepenc’.

He added that “the operation to liberate public properties, in this case those belonging to ‘Ibër-Lepenc’, will continue wherever there are encroachments and constructions without permits, without making any distinctions on national grounds.”
