Darko Kostadinovski, President of the Constitutional Court, said today that he considers the attacks coming from the political sphere and certain public institutions to be flattering for the institution he leads.

The comments were made during an open conference, after a reporter asked him about the perception that his term in office is being politicized. This follows strong criticism and protests over various court decisions. The most recent case involves the Democratic Union for Integration, which reacted sharply after the court struck down the 2007 act of the Municipality of Tetovo renaming several streets and the central square. The party Levica has also made accusations regarding the Court’s actions in connection with its initiative against certain provisions of the Electoral Code concerning political advertising.

Kostadinovski also referred extensively to the many reactions that followed the abolition of the so-called “balancer,” a mechanism for recruitment in the public sector on ethnic grounds, adding that issues such as the Law on the Use of Languages and amendments to the Criminal Code are also under review.

He explained that the tendency to politically colour the activities of the Constitutional Court began immediately after his first public appearance since taking office. On that occasion, he had announced an end to the practice of keeping cases in drawers and classifying them as sensitive or less sensitive. According to him, this culture of delaying cases has led to the current situation in which the system enjoys only two percent public trust.

“This politicization has become constant, whether regarding language issues, the ‘balancer,’ the Criminal Code, the Electoral Code, or street names. As I have said before, I read the attacks coming from politics and certain state bodies as a compliment to our work. As long as they show nervousness, it indicates that we are performing our duty properly, because our essential role is to set limits on those in power and keep them within constitutional and legal boundaries. Our goal is to prevent the overstepping of powers and unjust interference in other institutions. We simply safeguard the constitutional order, as mandated by the Constitution. This is our primary mission,” Kostadinovski concluded.

The Democratic Union for Integration today staged a protest against the Constitutional Court’s decision to annul the 2007 decision on the naming of streets in Tetovo, Telegrafi Macedonia reports.

The march began from the city square and then moved in front of the Municipality of Tetovo.

In Tetovo’s square, protesters carried banners reading “Yugo VLEN TITO”, “There is no peace with humiliation”, “Ivoja is not a martyr of my nation”, “There is no place for Tito in Illyria Square”, “Resistance begins in Tetovo”.

Bajram Rexhepi of DUI addressed the citizens, stressing that they are demanding a reconsideration of the Constitutional Court’s decision.

“This peaceful protest march was called as a result of the civic revolt that was created after the scandalous decision of the Constitutional Court to annul the decision on the names in the city of Tetovo. This march will begin from ‘Illyria’ Square yesterday

Our demand is for this decision to be reconsidered so that we can protect Tetovo’s dignity. The Municipality of Tetovo had a deadline to respond and reflect, and it did not respond to our offer for cooperation. This is why we were forced to call citizens to protest,” Bajrami said.

Asked why they are not organizing a protest in front of the Constitutional Court, Rexhepi replied that the court has already issued its decision.

Rexhepi added that civic revolt will only continue to grow further./Telegrafi/

North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, spoke today about the Constitutional Court’s decision regarding the restoration of the previous names of streets and squares in Tetovo.

As “Shenja” reports, he said that he does not comment on court decisions, but at the same time stressed that this ruling should not be seen as final.

“I think this is the beginning of a process that will have to result in a decision. Otherwise, with Bilall Kasami, in the future we have discussed streets whose names are numbers or have no numbers, so that they would receive the names of people who are deserving of Macedonia as an independent state, and I stand behind that, because it would be good for a street not to have a number, but to bear the name of a person who is deserving of the independent state of Macedonia,” Mickoski said.

Starting from October 1 of this year, the president and judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of North Macedonia will receive higher salaries compared with those currently provided for under the Law on Salaries and Other Compensation of Elected and Appointed Persons in the State, “360 Degrees” writes.

This comes after the Constitutional Court on Wednesday annulled the February 2026 amendments, but only in the part concerning the coefficient of the President of the Constitutional Court and its judges. As a result, their salaries will be calculated according to the legal provisions of 2024, when the coefficients were higher, Telegrafi Macedonia reports.

In essence, this is the outcome of the constitutional judges’ decision to strike down the amendments to the Law from February of this year that applied to them and had reduced the coefficients for calculating the salaries of all officials.

The decision was made at the session held on June 17. This issue did not attract major public attention, partly because at the same session the renaming of streets and squares in Tetovo from 2007 was also annulled, which means the old names will be restored.

In any case, the decision to annul parts of two articles of the Law on Salaries and Other Compensation of Elected and Appointed Persons, together with the full reasoning, has been published on the official website of the Constitutional Court.
