The public hearing on administrative and territorial reorganization in Elbasan took place amid political debate, with the main focus being the proposal to merge Elbasan Municipality with Cërrik Municipality and Belsh Municipality.

Elbasan Mayor Gledian Llatja supported the proposal to expand the central municipality.

According to him, a larger territorial area would create better opportunities for coordinating and integrating services, administration and planning processes.

Opposition representatives voiced reservations about the way the consultation is being conducted. Democratic Party MP Blendi Himçi questioned whether residents had been genuinely informed and involved, or whether the hearings were being held merely to fulfill a formal procedure.

Former Elbasan mayor Ardian Turku also called for every decision to be made following careful consideration. He asked whether the 2014 territorial reform, its results and the problems that emerged during its implementation had been fully analyzed.

Turku stressed that a new reform should be based on data, analysis and concrete arguments, so that the discussion would not be limited solely to political clashes.

Opposition councilor Ergys Muzhaqi also criticized the consultation process, calling for greater transparency and broader citizen participation.

Nevertheless, most participants in the hearing held in Elbasan expressed support for the proposal to expand the central municipality.

Consultations will continue as part of the national process to review the territorial map. In Elbasan, the discussion is expected to focus on the impact that a merger with Cërrik and Belsh could have on public services, administration and community representation.

A powerful fire broke out late last night in the village of Gjyralë, which is part of the Municipality of Cërrik.

The flames engulfed a considerable area covered with shrubs and low vegetation, spreading rapidly through the area.

As soon as the alert was received, local authorities were activated without delay to manage the situation. Dozens of firefighters, two operational vehicles and civil emergency personnel from Cërrik were sent to the scene.

Throughout the night, the teams involved fought to contain the active fire hotspots, keep the flames under control and fully extinguish them.

According to official reports, populated areas are not under threat. The homes in Gjyralë are at a safe distance from the fire front, while the response forces have built a protective barrier preventing the flames from approaching them.

At present, the operation is still under way. Emergency units remain on standby to monitor the fire line and extinguish any hidden hotspots, with the aim of preventing any possible re-ignition.

Elderly people in Cërrik say their pension income is insufficient to pay for medicines, food and household bills.

Because monthly expenses exceed their income, some pensioners say there are times when they cannot even afford to buy their medicines.

For many elderly people in Peqin, their pension runs out before the month is over. Almost all the money is spent on medicines, food and household expenses, leaving virtually nothing for other needs. One pensioner, who receives 93,000 lek, says she spends around 50,000 lek a month on medicines alone. She says that when costs rise, she is forced to go without some of her medication.

“My pension is 93,000 lek, while I need 50,000 lek for medicines. I cannot afford any other expenses. Without our children’s help, we would have died; we would have been finished. Life is very difficult. Prices here are very high, even higher than in Tirana. Sometimes we do not get our medicines because we cannot afford them, and we are afraid,” the woman said.

Other pensioners describe the same situation. They say that prices are out of proportion to pension levels and that their monthly income covers only their most essential needs.

One pensioner said everything is expensive and that wherever you go, you encounter high prices. Asked whether prices were proportionate to pensions, he replied: “Absolutely not.” According to him, the reasons are linked to the policies pursued by the state.

When the journalist asked how a pensioner manages to meet all these obligations, he replied that the difficulties are numerous and the situation is unmanageable. According to him, the pension is immediately spent on medicines, rent, electricity, water and other bills, which it cannot cover. He receives 174,000 lek but stresses that this amount is not enough. “With 174,000 lek, you have to buy medicines, this and that, and get through an entire month. It cannot be done. Medicines and food remain the main priorities,” the pensioner said.

Most of the pension is spent on medicines, food, electricity and water. In some families, help from their children remains the only way to make it through the month.

Another pensioner described life as very difficult but said his children live abroad and that his wife receives a somewhat better pension because she worked as a teacher and principal. He himself was a tailor and receives 157,000 lek. According to him, this income is not enough, especially to cover his and his wife’s hospital expenses. He said that despite claims to the contrary on television, hospitals will not even lay a hand on you without money. The pensioner added that operations cost between 2.5 million and 3 million lek, sums they cannot afford.

The pensioners interviewed by Euronews Albania say they feel the rising cost of living through the difficult decisions they must make each month: whether to buy medicines, pay their bills or cut back even on basic food. According to them, while pension amounts remain unchanged, expenses continue to rise.

Për shumë të moshuar në Peqin, pensioni përfundon pa u mbyllur ende muaji. Pothuajse të gjitha paratë përdoren për medikamente, ushqime dhe detyrimet e shtëpisë, duke mos lënë thuajse asgjë për nevoja të tjera. Një pensioniste, e cila merr 93 mijë lekë, tregon se rreth 50 mijë lekë në muaj i shpenzon vetëm për ilaçe. Ajo pohon se, kur kostot rriten, detyrohet të mos i marrë të gjitha medikamentet.

“Pensioni është 93 mijë lekë, ndërsa 50 mijë lekë më duhen për ilaçet. Nuk mund të përballoj asnjë shpenzim tjetër. Pa ndihmën e fëmijëve do të kishim vdekur, do të kishim mbaruar. Jeta është shumë e vështirë. Çmimet këtu janë shumë të larta, madje më të shtrenjta se në Tiranë. Ndonjëherë nuk i marrim ilaçet, sepse nuk kemi mundësi t’i paguajmë dhe kemi frikë”, është shprehur zonja.

Edhe pensionistë të tjerë përshkruajnë të njëjtën situatë. Ata vlerësojnë se niveli i çmimeve nuk përputhet me masën e pensioneve dhe se të ardhurat e muajit mbulojnë vetëm nevojat më jetike.

Një pensionist tha se gjithçka kushton shtrenjtë dhe se, kudo që të shkosh, përballesh me çmime të larta. I pyetur nëse ato janë në përpjesëtim me pensionin, ai u përgjigj: “Absolutisht jo”. Sipas tij, arsyet lidhen me politikën që ndjek shteti.

Kur gazetarja e pyeti se si arrin një pensionist t’i përballojë të gjitha detyrimet, ai u përgjigj se vështirësitë janë të shumta dhe situata nuk përballohet. Sipas tij, pensioni shkon menjëherë për ilaçet, qiranë, energjinë elektrike, ujin dhe faturat, të cilat nuk mbulohen dot. Ai merr 174 mijë lekë, por thekson se kjo shumë nuk mjafton. “Me 174 mijë lekë duhet të blesh ilaçet, këtë e atë dhe të kalosh një muaj të tërë. Nuk bëhet. Më kryesoret mbeten ilaçet dhe ushqimet”, tha pensionisti.

Pjesa dërrmuese e pensionit shpenzohet për medikamente, ushqime, energji elektrike dhe ujë. Në disa familje, ndihma e fëmijëve mbetet e vetmja mundësi për ta përballuar muajin.

Një tjetër pensionist e cilësoi jetesën shumë të vështirë, por tha se fëmijët i ka jashtë shtetit dhe se bashkëshortja merr një pension disi më të mirë, pasi ka punuar si mësuese dhe drejtoreshë. Ai vetë ka qenë rrobaqepës dhe merr 157 mijë lekë. Sipas tij, këto të ardhura nuk mjaftojnë, sidomos për shpenzimet spitalore të tij dhe të gruas. Ai u shpreh se, ndonëse në televizor thuhet ndryshe, në spitale nuk të prekin me dorë pa para. Pensionisti shtoi se operacionet kushtojnë 2 milionë e gjysmë deri në 3 milionë lekë, shuma që nuk mund të përballohen.

Pensionistët e intervistuar nga Euronews Albania thonë se rritjen e kostos së jetesës e ndiejnë përmes vendimeve të vështira që duhet të marrin çdo muaj: nëse do të blejnë ilaçet, do të shlyejnë faturat apo do të kursejnë edhe te ushqimet bazë. Sipas tyre, ndërsa masa e pensionit nuk ndryshon, shpenzimet vazhdojnë të rriten.
