The house belonging to the late parents of investigative journalist Vudi Xhymshiti has been burned again, while he suspects that the incident may be linked to his professional activities. Xhymshiti, who has taken critical positions toward political figures and groups associated with the PDK and AAK, has called on Kosovo’s institutions to fully investigate the case.

The fire engulfed the journalist’s family home in the village of Livoç i Ulët in Gjilan and caused material damage. The case was reported to the Kosovo Police on September 26, 2026, while it is still not known exactly when the fire started or what the circumstances were.

Interest in the case increased after Xhymshiti’s reaction, in which he recalled that the same residence had also been burned in 1999, during the war in Kosovo. According to his testimony, the fire at that time was caused by Serbian forces under Slobodan Milošević’s regime.

The journalist has expressed suspicion that the latest incident may be connected to his work in journalism, as well as to the threats and public pressure he says he experienced earlier.

Xhymshiti: I expect answers from the institutions

In a Facebook post, Xhymshiti spoke about his concerns regarding his safety and called on the authorities to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.

He stressed that he did not want to blame anyone for the fire without concrete evidence. However, the journalist mentioned individuals who, according to him, had fostered an atmosphere of hatred and public vilification against him.

His statement mentioned Hysni Gucati, a leader of war veterans, PDK official Elmi Reçica and Dardan Krasniqi, whom Xhymshiti identifies as a representative of the AAK.

Xhymshiti criticized these individuals for public statements and positions that, according to him, contributed to him being targeted because of his work as a journalist.

However, he did not state that he had evidence that any of the individuals mentioned had taken part in starting the fire.

Linking the latest case to the burning of the house during the war, the journalist said that using fear to silence the media poses a serious danger.

He concluded his reaction by vowing to continue his work and calling on Kosovo’s institutions to provide answers about what happened.

His positions toward the PDK and AAK

Vudi Xhymshiti is the founder and editor-in-chief of Frontline Media Group. Through his work, he has reported on sensitive political and historical topics, including the war in Kosovo, war crimes, political killings and judicial proceedings at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

He has also become known for his criticism of political figures and groups linked to the PDK and AAK, particularly on issues concerning responsibility for war crimes and the way political opponents are treated.

Xhymshiti has previously stated that he is not a member of any political party and that his positions stem from his professional commitment to journalism.

Public clashes with political representatives have also moved into legal proceedings. In June this year, Elmi Reçica announced that he had filed a civil lawsuit and submitted a criminal complaint against Xhymshiti. Reçica accused the journalist of making false statements and sending threatening messages to him and his family. These remain Reçica’s allegations and do not constitute judicial findings.

Earlier confrontations and the incident in The Hague

The burning of the house was reported after a series of incidents and threats made public by the journalist and the organization where he works.

On September 16, Frontline Media Group announced that Xhymshiti and political editor Michael Sheppard had been pushed and threatened while reporting near the Specialist Chambers in The Hague. According to the organization, the situation required the intervention of Dutch police.

Frontline Media Group also said that, after the incident, a video containing threats against Vudi Xhymshiti and Minister Donika Gërvalla was posted on social media.

In a statement published on September 27, the organization announced that police had detained a person suspected of making threats in connection with the video.

The organization has requested that these episodes be included in the overall review of the fire case, but clarified that so far there is no evidence proving a connection between them.

Police are treating the case as possible arson

The Kosovo Police confirmed that on September 26, at around 3:45 p.m., it received a report of a fire at a house in Livoç i Ulët.

According to police data, the damage was caused in the basement of the building, where a car, work equipment and household furnishings were located.

The property was unoccupied, and the authorities have still not been able to determine when the fire occurred.

Police investigators, units from the Regional Crime Technology Unit and a fire expert worked at the scene.

Following consultations with the State Prosecutor, the case was registered for investigation as a suspected criminal offense of arson. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

All developments should be examined

In a reaction published on Sunday, September 27, Frontline Media Group called on Kosovo’s institutions not to focus the investigation solely on the material damage caused to the house.

According to the organization, the exact time when the fire broke out must be established, technical evidence must be analyzed and the possibility of a connection with previous threats against the journalist must be examined.

Frontline Media Group said it was ready to hand investigators the materials it had preserved concerning the threats and alleged targeting of Xhymshiti.

At the same time, the organization made clear that it did not know who had caused the fire and that it was not ruling out any version that could be supported by the results of the expert examination.

The case has once again drawn attention to the safety of journalists and the way institutions respond to threats that may be connected to the practice of the profession.

Whether the fire was deliberate and whether there is any connection to Vudi Xhymshiti’s work remains for the investigative authorities to determine.
