Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, has made new claims about conversations he had with King Charles after his sister’s tragic death in 1997.

In his forthcoming memoir, titled “Swan Song,” Spencer claims that Charles, who at the time held the title of Prince of Wales, called him shortly after Diana’s death and appeared “extraordinarily happy” during the conversation, comparing his mood to that of “a lottery winner.”

According to another extract published by the Daily Mail, Spencer writes that Charles’s manner of speaking deeply surprised him.

Diana, the Princess of Wales, died in August 1997 after suffering severe internal injuries in a car accident in Paris.

At her funeral, on September 6, 1997, her sons, William and Harry, then aged 15 and 12 respectively, walked behind their mother’s coffin.

“We’ll forget it soon enough.”

In another section of the book, Spencer claims that, several days after Diana’s death, Charles reacted angrily when he objected to the idea of William and Harry taking part in the funeral procession.

Spencer writes that Charles launched into a “tirade of anger” during a telephone conversation and then told him: “Don’t worry, we’ll forget it soon enough!”

According to Spencer, he replied: “I can’t believe you just said that,” before hanging up the phone.

The claims are part of Charles Spencer’s memoir, which is expected to be published soon and contains detailed accounts of Diana’s relationship with the royal family.

Buckingham Palace responds

Buckingham Palace responded to Spencer’s claims with an unusual statement, emphasizing that it does not usually comment on books of this kind.

The statement said that King Charles was aware that the pain of losing a sibling can affect the way a person remembers and interprets events, even many years later.

“The pain of sibling grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways that others may not understand,” the statement said. The Palace had no further comment on the book’s new extracts.

Other claims about Diana’s relationship with Charles

In his book, Spencer also discusses the difficult relationship between Diana and Charles before and during their marriage.

According to him, Diana found a bracelet that her fiancé had bought for Camilla at a time when she and Charles were engaged. Spencer also claims that Diana tried to withdraw from the marriage.

Another episode mentioned in the book concerns a comment Charles allegedly made to Diana shortly after their engagement, calling her “chubby.” According to Spencer, the comment deeply affected Diana, who suffered from an eating disorder.

Many of these stories have also been reported previously in biographical books and by various media outlets.
