At a press conference with journalists on Wednesday, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha alleged that Prime Minister Edi Rama had ordered the finance minister to disburse €8.5 million to businessman Ermal Beqiri, who was arrested in France.

Berisha said that Ermal Beqiri is effectively a front man for Rama’s interests, stressing that he has misappropriated money for the benefit of the prime minister’s family.

“Wanted since December last year and recently arrested in France because he flew at an unauthorized altitude over a secret facility, Ermal Beqiri, effectively the main representative of the Rama family within the Lindas’ AKSHI, continues to be paid millions of euros, despite the fact that this criminal has misappropriated hundreds of millions of euros for the Rama family and himself. Most recently, Edi Rama also ordered the finance minister to disburse €8.5 million to him, to show Ermal Beqiri that no criminal offense, arrest warrant or extradition order can hinder or block his role as a front man, representative and intermediary for Edi Rama in what Rama had proclaimed to be his field of success: AKSHI, his private garden. I strongly condemn this act, as well as the justice authorities’ failure to freeze his companies. In a pattern of complicity, not only in this case but in others as well, they are failing to take the actions required by law. Ermal Beqiri’s company, which is effectively a front for the interests of Edi Rama and Frangu’s company, continues to be paid millions upon millions of euros, despite the fact that he has been wanted for seven months for several criminal offenses, including involvement in a structured criminal group,” Berisha said.

Berisha said that Ermal Beqiri’s company has been seized and cannot receive a single cent.

“This keeper of Rama’s castle must not receive a single cent,” the Democratic Party leader said.
