A bus carrying foreign tourists caught fire around midday today at Qafa e Kalasë in Berat while traveling toward the castle. The bus, with license plate AB 917 UE, was carrying 52 passengers, including children.

According to preliminary information, the first sparks were seen at the front of the vehicle, near the engine.

The driver stopped the bus immediately, and the passengers managed to get off in time before the flames engulfed the entire vehicle. None of the tourists were injured.

After sparks appeared in the engine compartment, the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the entire bus. Numerous firefighters and police officers arrived at the scene and worked to extinguish the flames.

The bus was completely gutted by the fire. The flames also engulfed a Mercedes-Benz SUV that was parked near a home.

The owner was unable to move the vehicle in time, and it was severely damaged by the fire.

Preliminary suspicions are that the fire was caused by an electrical spark in the bus’s engine.

Meanwhile, the bus driver, Ervis Dyrmani, from Durrës, was taken to the police station for questioning about the incident.

Last night, a fire broke out in a warehouse filled with agricultural materials in the village of Veterik, Berat Municipality. The flames then spread rapidly to a two-story home adjoining the warehouse.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had reached the first floor of the home.

Thanks to their intensive efforts, firefighters managed to extinguish the flames and bring the situation under control.

As a result of the incident, the warehouse containing agricultural produce was completely destroyed. The causes and circumstances of the incident remain unknown, while authorities are investigating further.

The individuals in question had businesses registered with the activity object of “Agent for carrying out financial activity for money transfers in the name and on behalf of a financial entity, non-bank.” More specifically, the Unionnet and Western Union services, located in Berat and Kuçovë, were found not to appear on the list of licensed currency exchange offices, operating without a license issued by the Bank of Albania.

With authorization granted by the prosecution body to allow undercover actions and covert photographic, film or video recording, 28 monetary exchange operations were carried out at the suspected entities, proving that they were conducting this activity without a license. Subsequently, the Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction in Berat requested the security measures of “Obligation to appear before the judicial police” and “House Arrest,” as provided for under Articles 233, 234 and 237 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

During searches carried out as part of these proceedings, 88 million lek, 118 thousand euros, 7,390 dollars and 665 pounds were found and seized.
