According to Haxhiu, the morning of September 11, 25 years ago, remained forever as the moment that divided time into the period before and after that date.

She said that September 11, as described at the beginning of the U.S. investigative commission’s report on the event, began as a completely ordinary morning. Millions of people were preparing to go to work; some were heading to the Twin Towers in New York, others to the Pentagon, while visitors were waiting in line to enter the White House. At that time, President George W. Bush had gone out for his morning run.

At 8:46 a.m., the first airplane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. In Kosovo, the time was 2:46 p.m., and just two minutes later, television stations began broadcasting images of the towers engulfed in flames. As the broadcast continued live, at 9:03 a.m. New York time, the second airplane crashed into the South Tower.

Haxhiu stressed that people, from New York to Pristina, remained in front of their screens, following the same tragedy. The American morning, which had begun with clear skies and citizens heading to work, turned within minutes into the morning that defined the period before and after September 11.

She also recalled the immediate reaction of Kosovo’s citizens, who expressed their support for the American people in various ways, including volunteering to donate blood.

According to her, although the September 11 attacks targeted the United States, the pain immediately crossed American borders. In Pristina and other cities across the Republic of Kosovo, citizens turned out to show solidarity with the American people, lit candles, organized gatherings and marches, and came forward to donate blood. The streets filled with people carrying American flags and banners bearing the words: “America, we are with you.”

Kosovo’s Special Prosecution has filed an indictment for war crimes against civilians in connection with the attack on the Jashari neighborhood in Prekaz, carried out on March 5, 6 and 7, 1998.

According to the case prosecutor, Valdet Gashi, 35 people have been included in the criminal proceedings. Investigators consider them to be former officials who held senior command positions within the structures of the Serbian Police’s special units.

The person at the center of the accusations over the direct attack on the Jashari family is Milorad Ulemek, known as “Legija.” The Special Prosecution claims that at the time he headed Serbia’s Special Operations Unit.

Valdet Gashi said that Ulemek had taken charge of the operation against the home of Shaban Jashari’s family following a request he had made.

“Legija” led the Special Operations Unit and, at his specific request, had the obligation and duty to directly attack the home of Shaban Jashari’s family. According to Gashi, this was also carried out on the ground.

The prosecution says that 26 civilians were killed during the attack, including children, women and elderly people. Residents of the Jashari neighborhood are also suspected of having been held hostage and subjected to mistreatment.

The proceedings have been conducted in absentia, as Kosovo’s authorities have been unable to secure the accused persons’ appearance in court. According to information available to the prosecution, all 35 defendants are still alive.

A serious incident occurred around midday today (September 3) at one of the hotels in the Orikum area of Vlora, where a group of more than 10 people, most of them armed, are suspected of having gone to extort the hotel owner.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. According to preliminary information, the individuals initially verbally threatened the hotel owner and then also used firearms, demanding €5 million.

There was also a physical altercation between the parties, while the perpetrators left the hotel premises immediately after the incident.

Police services arrived at the scene and began pursuing the perpetrators. During the pursuit, two people traveling in a vehicle were involved in an accident on the Peshkëpia Bridge, at the entrance to Vlora.

The injured individuals were transported by ambulance to the hospital. According to preliminary information, one of them suffered multiple injuries to the back and spinal column, while the other sustained injuries in the accident.

Meanwhile, a large number of police officers have been deployed across several areas of the city of Vlora in an effort to apprehend those involved in the incident.

Police are continuing checks and investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.

Olivier Guérot, France’s outgoing ambassador to Kosovo, recounted his four-year experience in the country during an exclusive interview on the “Info Magazine” program.

The Special Prosecution Office has asked the Basic Court in Pristina to order pre-trial detention for Igor Marković, who was arrested in Zvečan on Sunday on suspicion of participating in the violent attacks against KFOR personnel and Kosovo Police officers during the 2023 unrest.

The arrest was carried out as part of a police operation conducted in Zvečan by investigators from the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Serious Crimes, the Special Prosecution Office announced.

Immediately after he was detained, the prosecution submitted a request to the Basic Court in Pristina for him to be remanded in custody.

Marković is suspected of involvement in criminal acts related to the violent clashes in the north of the country in 2023, during which KFOR personnel and Kosovo Police officers were attacked.

The Special Prosecution Office announced that legal proceedings against the suspect are continuing following his arrest.

In its statement, the Special Prosecution Office also released official footage of the operation and the moment Igor Marković was arrested.

The Basic Court in Pristina is expected to rule on the request for pre-trial detention. Until a final court decision is issued, the suspect is presumed innocent.
