Around 5,000 citizens submitted applications to acquire, reacquire or renounce citizenship between January and June of this year, according to Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla.

Sveçla announced that, beginning Monday, August 17, 2026, decisions on these procedures will be delivered to citizens at the relocated office in the Civil Registration Agency building.

The minister explained that the move to the new location is intended to provide more suitable conditions for citizens and more efficient service delivery.

“Citizens will have access to a more suitable environment and more efficient service,” Sveçla wrote.

To shorten waiting times and reduce queues, he also announced that the number of support staff has been increased.

Citizens may also apply to acquire, reacquire or renounce citizenship through the e-Kosova platform. According to Sveçla, the online application option makes the procedure simpler and more accessible.

“We will continue our efforts to guarantee citizens the fastest, most efficient and most accessible services possible,” he said.

Parents and legal guardians have only a few hours left before the extended deadline to apply for the school textbook subsidy expires. The Ministry of Education has renewed its call for them to take advantage of this final window, which closes at midnight tonight, to secure the funds before the start of the new school year.

Initially, the application process was scheduled to close on August 9, but following appeals from many families who were experiencing difficulties, the authorities decided to extend it. According to the latest official figures, more than 181,500 applications have been registered on the platform for students from first through ninth grade. Of these, 95,388 applications have already been approved, while 96,098 are under review and another 710 have been rejected.

Anita Kadriu, director of the Department of Pre-University Education, explained the verification mechanism being applied to each request. According to her, a coordinator at each school verifies whether the student is actually enrolled at that institution and in the relevant grade. The application is approved only after this confirmation; otherwise, it is rejected. This measure, which is being implemented nationwide for the second consecutive year, aims to eliminate any attempt at misuse. Kadriu stressed that the Ministry of Education is continually refining the process to make it as secure and transparent as possible.

As for the specific benefits, the state budget has allocated 14 million euros to this support scheme. However, the exact amount each family will receive remains unclear, as it will be calculated only after applications close and the full verification of the data is completed. The Ministry says the verification process is expected to be completed next week, with bank transfers to begin immediately afterward. The ultimate goal, the authorities emphasize, is for every student to have their schoolbooks before September 1, when the school year officially begins.

The deadline for applications for the race for the heads of the six main departments at the General Directorate of State Police has closed. The deadline for submitting applications ended on Friday, July 17, while 9 candidates have registered in the process.

According to sources, six new heads of the most important departments of the State Police are expected to be selected from these candidates.

In the race are Pëllumb Seferi, Artan Barjaktari, Lorenc Panganika, Saimir Muça, Hergis Jica, Idajet Faskaj, Ferdinand Mara, Alban Dauti, and Lufti Minxhozi.

The competition has been held for the leadership of the Criminal Police Department, the International Relations Department, the Support Services Department, the Public Order and Security Department, the Information Technology Department, and the Border and Migration Department.

The process was opened by order of Chief of Police Skënder Hita and aims, for the first time, for the heads of these structures to be selected through a competition.

A few months ago, the procedure was suspended after a lawsuit by the former head of the BKH, Aida Hajnaj, in the Administrative Court.

According to the criteria set out in the law on the State Police, candidates must have a middle management rank, not have serious disciplinary measures during the last three years, not be in a conflict of interest, and meet the legal and health criteria for the position.

In the coming days, the evaluation phases by the special commission of the State Police are expected to take place, after which the new heads of the six departments will be determined.

Their appointment will be made upon the proposal of the General Director of the State Police and with the signature of the Minister of Interior, Besfort Lamallari.

This is expected to be the first and last selection process by competition for these leadership levels, as the Assembly is expected to review changes to the State Police law that provide for the elimination of the competition for lower leadership levels.
