Albanians for America has reacted with great concern and disappointment to today’s verdict by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague concerning the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

In a statement, the organization said it does not accept the decision, describing it as unjust to the people who fought for Kosovo’s liberation. AFA stressed that the KLA’s war was aimed at securing freedom and protecting the people of Kosovo.

“The Kosovo Liberation Army was created under conditions of repression and violence perpetrated by the Serbian regime, at a time when the Albanians of Kosovo were facing killings, expulsions, destruction and serious crimes. This historical truth cannot be undone,” the statement said.

According to Albanians for America, the verdict must not be used to put a people’s struggle for freedom in the dock. Nor should it create a moral or historical equivalence between Kosovo’s war of liberation and the Serbian state apparatus, which committed crimes and inflicted violence on civilians.

“The facts are clear: Serbia was the aggressor, while Kosovo was the victim. AFA stands with the KLA, the just struggle of the people of Kosovo for freedom, and the people of Kosovo themselves. In the 1998–1999 war, Kosovo was not the aggressor, but a people striving to survive and free itself from repression,” the statement said.

The organization also emphasized that today’s decision does not constitute the conclusion of the legal process. It is a judgment at first instance and, in accordance with the procedures of the Specialist Chambers, the parties may challenge it before the Court of Appeals Panel. For this reason, the judicial process remains open.

Albanians for America said it would continue to defend the historical truth about the war in Kosovo, the right of the Albanian people to dignity and freedom, as well as Kosovo’s strategic partnership with the United States of America.

“The KLA waged war to liberate Kosovo. Freedom belongs to the people of Kosovo, and this right cannot be put on trial,” the statement concluded.

Sipas Albanians for America, aktgjykimi nuk duhet të përdoret për të vënë në bankën e të akuzuarve përpjekjen e një populli për liri. Po ashtu, ai nuk duhet të krijojë barazi morale apo historike mes luftës çlirimtare të Kosovës dhe aparatit shtetëror serb, i cili kreu krime dhe ushtroi dhunë ndaj civilëve.

“Faktet janë të qarta: Serbia ishte agresore, ndërsa Kosova ishte viktimë. AFA qëndron përkrah UÇK-së, luftës së drejtë të popullit të Kosovës për liri dhe vetë popullit të Kosovës. Në luftën e viteve 1998–1999, Kosova nuk ishte agresore, por një popull që përpiqej të mbijetonte dhe të çlirohej nga represioni”, deklarohet në komunikatë.

The organization “Albanians for America” has welcomed the agreement reached between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo to nominate Prof. Dr. Bekim Sejdiu for President of the Republic of Kosovo.

In a statement, the organization highlighted Sejdiu’s academic background, professional experience and commitment to Kosovo’s statehood, democratic principles and the country’s growing international role.

“Albanians for America” said it supports his candidacy and called on all members of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo to be guided in their decision-making by the national interest and the need for stable, democratic and credible institutions.

According to the organization, Kosovo needs a President who unites its citizens, represents the country and protects its national interests, while strengthening the strategic partnership with the United States and the Republic’s Euro-Atlantic orientation.

“Albanians for America” urged MPs not to delay and to fulfill their constitutional responsibility by voting for the President of the Republic.

Albanians for America has welcomed the introduction in the U.S. Congress of the bill “Supporting the Rule of Law, Building Institutional Justice, and Accountability Act,” known as the SRBIJA Act. According to the organization, the initiative represents an effort to demand greater accountability from the Government of Serbia, while commending the members of Congress who support this approach.

In its statement, the organization emphasizes that the United States should not ignore the deterioration of democratic standards, corruption, undermining of independent institutions, suppression of peaceful protests, and policies that threaten the stability of the Western Balkans.

The SRBIJA Act raises concerns about the state of the rule of law in Serbia, the autonomy of the judiciary, media freedom, corruption, as well as the way student and civic protests are being handled. The bill also calls for independent and credible investigations into the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station, as well as allegations of the use of excessive force against peaceful protesters.

According to the statement, Serbia is seeking to present itself as a reliable ally of the United States and Europe, while continuing to maintain close political, economic, and security ties with Russia and China. At the same time, it says that Serbia is also expanding cooperation with Iran.

Albanians for America considers that the SRBIJA Act rightly calls for an in-depth assessment of these relationships, particularly when they conflict with the security interests of the United States, NATO, and Europe.

The organization considers this legislation an important step toward holding the Government of Serbia accountable for its policies and actions.

Albanians for America stresses that its concern is related to the activities and policies of the Government of Serbia, not to the Serbian people. According to the organization, Serbia’s citizens deserve democracy, transparency, independent institutions, freedom of expression, and a government that is accountable to its own citizens.

According to the organization, the same standards should apply to all countries in the Western Balkans.

The organization highlights the fact that the bill acknowledges the importance of the European Union-mediated Serbia–Kosovo dialogue and supports the continuation of U.S. engagement in this process. It emphasizes that lasting peace in the region must be based on accountability, mutual recognition, respect for existing agreements, and the cessation of any destabilizing actions.

The United States, it further states, has invested diplomatic, economic, and security resources for decades in creating a peaceful and democratic Western Balkans. According to Albanians for America, this commitment should not be undermined by governments that turn away from democratic values while moving closer to authoritarian powers.

For these reasons, Albanians for America calls on Congress and the U.S. Administration to pursue policies that hold Serbian officials accountable for corruption and human rights violations.

The organization also calls for the protection of democratic institutions, free elections, media freedom, and the right to peaceful assembly.

It urges U.S. authorities to seriously examine Serbia’s increasingly close ties with Russia, China, and Iran.

The organization’s demands also include support for the sovereignty and security of the Republic of Kosovo, as well as the strengthening of the U.S.–Kosovo strategic partnership.

Albanians for America calls for support for the EU-led dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, insisting on the genuine implementation of agreements and accountability.

The organization also calls for the expansion of U.S.–Serbia cooperation to be conditioned on sustained and credible democratic reforms.

According to the organization, the SRBIJA Act clearly conveys the message that partnership with the United States is not a blank check, but comes with responsibilities.

Albanians for America expresses strong support for this principle and calls on Congress to assess the Government of Serbia according to the same democratic and security standards required of any state seeking a strong partnership with the United States.

The organization emphasizes that democracy, accountability, sovereignty, and peace must form the foundation of U.S. policy in the Balkans.

Sipas saj, nisma përbën një përpjekje për t’i kërkuar Qeverisë së Serbisë llogari më të madhe, duke vlerësuar anëtarët e Kongresit që e mbështesin këtë qasje.

Në reagimin e saj, organizata thekson se SHBA-ja nuk duhet të injorojë përkeqësimin e standardeve demokratike, korrupsionin, cenimin e institucioneve të pavarura, shtypjen e protestave paqësore dhe politikat që rrezikojnë stabilitetin e Ballkanit Perëndimor.

SRBIJA Act ngre shqetësime për gjendjen e sundimit të ligjit në Serbi, autonominë e gjyqësorit, lirinë e medias, korrupsionin si edhe mënyrën e trajtimit të protestave studentore dhe qytetare. Projektligji kërkon po ashtu zhvillimin e hetimeve të pavarura dhe të besueshme për tragjedinë në stacionin hekurudhor të Novi Sadit, si dhe për pretendimet mbi përdorimin e forcës së tepruar ndaj protestuesve paqësorë.

Sipas komunikatës, Serbia përpiqet të paraqitet si aleate e besueshme e Shteteve të Bashkuara dhe Evropës, ndërsa vazhdon të ruajë lidhje të ngushta politike, ekonomike dhe të sigurisë me Rusinë dhe Kinën. Në të njëjtën kohë, thuhet se ajo po zgjeron bashkëpunimin edhe me Iranin.

Albanians for America vlerëson se SRBIJA Act kërkon me të drejtë një vlerësim të thelluar të këtyre marrëdhënieve, sidomos në rastet kur ato përplasen me interesat e sigurisë së SHBA-së, NATO-s dhe Evropës.

Organizata e konsideron këtë legjislacion një hap të rëndësishëm për ta bërë Qeverinë e Serbisë përgjegjëse për politikat dhe veprimet e saj.

Ky angazhim, sipas Albanians for America, nuk duhet të cenohet nga qeveri që largohen nga vlerat demokratike, ndërkohë që afrohen me fuqi autoritare.

Për këto arsye, Albanians for America i kërkon Kongresit dhe Administratës Amerikane të ndjekin politika që mbajnë përgjegjës zyrtarët serbë për korrupsionin dhe shkeljet e të drejtave të njeriut.

Opening Serbia’s military and police records is crucial to clarifying the fate of around 1,600 people forcibly disappeared during the war in Kosovo and ensuring justice for the victims, the organization Albanians for America has said.

In a recently published opinion piece, the organization noted that nearly three decades after the end of the war, thousands of families still have not received answers about their relatives. According to the organization, the recent investigations in Kalludra e Vogël and Jabuka have once again highlighted the urgent need to fully uncover the truth about war crimes and the systematic concealment of evidence.

The opinion piece states that around 1,600 people continue to be considered forcibly disappeared, even though nearly three decades have passed since the end of the war in Kosovo. Meanwhile, thousands of families are still waiting to learn the truth about the fate of their loved ones, while the investigations in Kalludra e Vogël and Jabuka demonstrate the urgent need to fully shed light on the war crimes committed by Serbia and the organized concealment of evidence.

Albanians for America says that research and field excavations are important, but they alone are not enough to achieve justice.

According to the organization’s argument, making the Serbian archives available would help establish the chain of responsibility, locate other mass graves and bring the perpetrators of the crimes to justice.

The organization emphasizes in the opinion piece that justice delayed is justice denied, and that without uncovering the truth, establishing responsibility and securing justice for the victims, lasting peace in the Western Balkans cannot be achieved.

Albanians for America announced that the full version of the opinion piece has been published in both Albanian and English.

Meanwhile, in recent days, international media outlets have focused attention on the discovery of sites suspected of being mass graves in Zubin Potok.

Al Jazeera, citing reports by AFP and Anadolu, reported that the Kosovar authorities have identified a third location suspected of being a mass grave. At the same time, investigations into suspected war crimes committed in 1998-1999 are continuing.

Përmes një opinioni të publikuar së fundmi, organizata ka kujtuar se, afro tri dekada nga përfundimi i luftës, mijëra familje ende nuk kanë marrë përgjigje për të afërmit e tyre. Hetimet e fundit në Kalludrën e Vogël dhe Jabukë, sipas saj, kanë risjellë në qendër të vëmendjes domosdoshmërinë për zbardhjen urgjente dhe të plotë të krimeve të luftës, si dhe të fshehjes sistematike të provave.

Në opinion thuhet se rreth 1,600 persona vazhdojnë të konsiderohen të zhdukur me dhunë, ndonëse kanë kaluar afro tri dekada nga përfundimi i luftës në Kosovë. Ndërkohë, mijëra familje mbeten në pritje të së vërtetës për fatin e njerëzve të tyre më të dashur, ndërsa hetimet në Kalludrën e Vogël dhe Jabukë dëshmojnë nevojën urgjente për të ndriçuar tërësisht krimet e luftës të kryera nga Serbia dhe fshehjen e organizuar të provave.

“Albanians for America” vlerëson se puna kërkimore dhe gërmimet në terren kanë rëndësi, por vetëm ato nuk janë të mjaftueshme për arritjen e drejtësisë.

Sipas argumentimit të organizatës, vënia në dispozicion e arkivave serbe do të ndihmonte në përcaktimin e zinxhirit të përgjegjësisë, në gjetjen e varrezave të tjera masive dhe në përballjen e autorëve të krimeve me drejtësinë.

Organizata thekson në opinion se drejtësia që vonohet barazohet me drejtësi të mohuar, ndërsa pa zbulimin e së vërtetës, përcaktimin e përgjegjësisë dhe vendosjen e drejtësisë për viktimat, paqja e qëndrueshme në Ballkanin Perëndimor nuk mund të arrihet.

“Albanians for America” ka njoftuar se versioni i plotë i opinionit është bërë publik si në shqip, ashtu edhe në anglisht.

For the first time, the organization Albanians For America (AFA), represented by Doc Vranici, joined the meeting of the Central and Eastern European Coalition (CEEC) held on Capitol Hill.

Established in 1994, this coalition brings together 18 national organizations representing American communities with roots in Central and Eastern Europe. The CEEC aims to strengthen ties between the United States and this region, promoting a free, secure, and democratic environment.

During the sessions in the U.S. Congress, AFA, along with other coalition members, raised their voice on key strategic issues. Topics included Russian aggression in Ukraine, the crisis in Georgia, sanctions against Russia, Kosovo’s path toward NATO, support for holding the NATO Summit in Albania next year, and the continuation of support for security initiatives in the Baltic states. All participating organizations stressed the urgent need to counter Russian aggression and China’s malign influence in the region.

As part of the CEEC delegation, AFA attended the Capitol Hill conference titled “Building Resilience: A View from NATO’s Centers of Excellence in the Baltic States.” The event featured Congressmen Don Bacon and Salud Carbajal, along with senior officials from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

The delegation also held meetings with Kristine Berzina from the U.S. Helsinki Commission and conducted bipartisan talks with the offices of Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Congressman Keith Self (R-TX), Congressman Zach Nunn (R-IA), and Congressman French Hill (R-AR). The discussions focused on increasing U.S. engagement in Central and Eastern Europe and advancing policies that ensure the security and stability of the region.

In addition to engagements within the coalition, AFA organized a meeting with a member of the National Security Council at the Executive Office of the President, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. There, Washington’s engagement in the Balkans and issues of interest to Albanians in the region were discussed.

A separate meeting was also held with the Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to the United States, Ilir Dugolli, to review recent developments and opportunities for deepening relations between the two countries. During its stay in Washington, the delegation also signed the guestbook in honor of Senator Lindsey Graham.

By expanding its presence in the American capital, AFA reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that the voice of Albanian-Americans is heard in decision-making centers. The organization thanks its partners, lawmakers, and CEEC members for their collaboration and aims to continue building on these relationships in the service of freedom, security, strengthening U.S.-Albania and U.S.-Kosovo ties, and a more stable Central and Eastern Europe.

I krijuar në vitin 1994, ky koalicion bashkon 18 organizata kombëtare që përfaqësojnë komunitetet amerikane me rrënjë në Evropën Qendrore dhe Lindore. CEEC synon të forcojë lidhjet midis Shteteve të Bashkuara dhe këtij rajoni, duke nxitur një mjedis të lirë, të sigurt dhe demokratik.

Gjatë seancave në Kongresin amerikan, AFA bashkë me anëtarët e tjerë të koalicionit ngritën zërin për çështje kyçe strategjike. Temat përfshinin agresionin rus në Ukrainë, krizën në Gjeorgji, masat ndëshkuese kundër Rusisë, rrugëtimin e Kosovës drejt NATO-s, përkrahjen për mbajtjen e Samitit të NATO-s në Shqipëri gjatë vitit të ardhshëm, si dhe vijimësinë e mbështetjes për nismat e sigurisë në shtetet baltike. Të gjitha organizatat pjesëmarrëse theksuan nevojën urgjente për t’iu kundërvënë agresionit rus dhe ndikimit dashakeqës të Kinës në zonë.

Si pjesë e delegacionit të CEEC, AFA ishte e pranishme në konferencën e Capitol Hill me titull “Rritja e qëndrueshmërisë: Një vështrim nga Qendrat e Ekselencës së NATO-s në vendet baltike”. Në këtë aktivitet morën pjesë kongresmenët Don Bacon dhe Salud Carbajal, së bashku me zyrtarë të lartë nga Lituania, Letonia dhe Estonia.

Delegacioni kreu gjithashtu takime me Kristine Berzina nga Komisioni i Helsinkit i SHBA-së, si dhe zhvilloi bisedime dypartiake me zyrat e senatorit Chris Coons (D-DE), senatores Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), kongresistit Keith Self (R-TX), kongresistit Zach Nunn (R-IA) dhe kongresistit French Hill (R-AR). Bisedat u fokusuan në rritjen e përfshirjes amerikane në Evropën Qendrore dhe Lindore dhe në çuarjen përpara të politikave që garantojnë sigurinë dhe stabilitetin e rajonit.

Përveç angazhimeve brenda koalicionit, AFA organizoi një takim me një pjesëtar të Këshillit të Sigurisë Kombëtare pranë Zyrës Ekzekutive të Presidentit, në Ndërtesën Ekzekutive Eisenhower. Aty u diskutua angazhimi i Uashingtonit në Ballkan dhe çështjet me interes për shqiptarët e rajonit.

Një takim i veçantë u zhvillua gjithashtu me ambasadorin e Republikës së Kosovës në Shtetet e Bashkuara, Ilir Dugolli, ku u shqyrtuan zhvillimet e fundit dhe mundësitë për thellimin e marrëdhënieve midis dy vendeve. Gjatë qëndrimit në Uashington, delegacioni firmosi edhe librin përkujtimor në nder të senatorit Lindsey Graham.

Duke zgjeruar praninë e vet në kryeqytetin amerikan, AFA rikonfirmon përkushtimin që zëri i shqiptaro-amerikanëve të dëgjohet në qendrat e vendimmarrjes. Organizata falënderon partnerët, ligjvënësit dhe anëtarët e CEEC për bashkëpunimin dhe synon të vijojë ndërtimin mbi këto marrëdhënie në shërbim të lirisë, sigurisë, forcimit të lidhjeve SHBA–Shqipëri dhe SHBA–Kosovë, si dhe të një Evrope Qendrore dhe Lindore më të qëndrueshme.
