Central Tirana is expected to be gripped by political tensions again on Monday. During the morning, the Albanian Parliament will hold a plenary session to appoint replacement members to parliamentary committees, while a citizens’ protest has also been announced for the same time.

Organizers have once again called on citizens to gather outside the Parliament building. Clashes with police officers or MPs as they enter Parliament cannot be ruled out, as occurred on July 23.

Ensuring that the session proceeds normally and maintaining order in the area around Parliament will be the main challenge for the authorities.

The rally is expected to once again bring demands directed against the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama to the center of political debate. In response to the issues raised by the protest, Rama has presented a document titled “Besa.”

Attention will focus on how the protest is managed and whether it proceeds peacefully or is once again accompanied by clashes.

Parliament voted today to appoint Ismail Shehu as head of the Public Procurement Commission. During the vote on his candidacy, only five votes were cast against, with two abstentions.

Edvin Simo, Donika Daci and Nertil Kanina were also appointed as members of the commission.

The session was marked by heightened tensions after the majority rejected the opposition’s proposal to extend the deadline for the Territorial Reform. As a result, opposition MPs blocked the podium, forcing Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi to suspend the session several times.

During these heated moments, opposition representatives threw water bottles and pieces of cardboard at Prime Minister Edi Rama.
